Check with your banking establishment about charges for using your card abroad. Also check about charges for using ATMs abroad. If your establishment doesn’t charge a fee for using ATMs when traveling abroad then only exchange enough dollars to the visiting country currency to get you settled in. Then get local currency from ATMs. Banks charge a percentage above the international rate for exchanging currency. When you get cash from an ATM the exchange takes place at the international level and gives you the international exchange rate. I have been in the USAF for 23 years and traveled all over Europe. I have saved as musch as $250 on a vacation using ATMs rather than banks to accomplish my currancy exchange.

It is also advisable to let your credit card company know if you’ll be taking any extended vacation in the U.S. I recently had a security block put on my credit card after spending several weeks on the road.

Just an FYI about the fourth bullet point..

When phoning your card company, it’s not necessary to give them your itinerary unless they ask for it. Just tell them you’ll be traveling abroad, when, and for how long.
