UPS Opinions and Choices
In last night’s email newsletter (picks@lockergnome.com), I linked to a video question submitted through my EyeJot video widget. Recently, Aaron asked a question about Uninterruptible Power Supplies. I suggested getting a unit that included Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR), subsequently hyperlinking everyone to a classic story on UPS batteries. Fellow Lockergnome subscriber Brian Newell submitted:
Regarding Aaron’s question about UPS, wouldn’t a line conditioner or isolation transformer work just as well? It sounds like there are no true power outages so a battery backup might be overkill (although that’s not necessarily a BAD thing). After a quick check on tripplite.com, comparable MSRP pricing on Tripplite products are $172 for a 1200 watt line conditioner (LC1200), $400 for a 1000 watt isolation transformer (IS1000) and $599 for a 940 watt UPS (TE1200). And, yes, I realize that an isolation transformer in a home is overkill. Whoever heard of the need for an electrical circuit in a home to be completely dedicated from other circuits just to run a computer? Although if you’re talking about an expensive home theater system or the downtime someone might experience while waiting for replacement components after electrical damage….
I’ve been largely satisfied with Belkin’s line of hardware, but I’m also wondering what you use? How do you protect your electrical equipment?

I use APC’s smaller units on my TiVos and a 500kva unit for my computer. I know it only lasts a few minutes but generally a brown out is very short and they make decent but not great surge proctectors. A more expensive unit that is always on the battery power would be better.

I use small APC units, putting one or two PCs on each one.

Most of my UPSes are APC, and I’m happy enough with them.
I do have one from ‘CyberPower’ that sorta sucks. Shoulda known, but Fry’s was out of the big APC units that day. D’oh!

… window. But lately, I’ve been considering running Windows XP inside a VMWare window on a Mac, along with Fedora. How much RAM can you install on the latest OSX systems?

OT kinda: What happens to batteries? Why not passive solar an a longer life renewable battery? Decentralize the Grid. We could all be producers not just consumers.

Holy ****, I’ve been Pirillo’d ! Thanks !
Just to be clear the device wouldn’t need to be a mini power station.. just enough to keep my machines happy during some patchy times of day. looking forward to the comments

APC is the only way to go, I tried the “energizer” one from that silly bunny company and it was terrible. Never works right doesnt even provide a backup. just aweful.

I have one of those big Belkin bricks protecting the computers and peripherals. 500 - is that the model number? But, nothing protecting the vacuum pot or burr grinder.

APC all the way. You have to pay more to get a SmartUPS so that you get AVR but it’s worth it.

I have been using APC units for years and have been very happy. Replacement batteries are easily available from the manufacturer or from other suppliers. Each of two computers have one and my modem and router in the basement share a third one. That third one used to also power a file server which has been replaced by a USB drive on my own computer.

Uninterruptible Power Supply ( UPS ) do you have one…
I’ve wanted an Uninterruptible Power Supply ( UPS ) for many years. The other day I finally got one. Over the years a few people have debated the usefulness of this device. Many people will tell you that you should unplug any and all appliances and ot…

I never think about surge protection. My house is full of power strips, and I cheerlully assume that they work for surge protection, too.

I know it’s anecdotal, but just about every Tripplite UPS I’ve used has failed in some form or another. We tossed a half dozen at work because none of them were reliable - also the only company I ever got one DOA from.
Never had a problem with APC or Belkin.

I have two APC Smart-UPS 1500 units that I connect to my electronics like multiple TiVos, satellite receiver, Mac & PC computers, etc. They are both refurbished units that were purchased from the APC factory direct online store. They arrived in like new condition with new batteries installed. An old Back-UPS Pro 650 powers my bedroom alarm clock. I think I’ve gone through at least a couple of batteries in the 650 before its semi-retirement. I don’t hesitate to recommend APC as an excellent brand name to protect your equipment. Having experienced their customer service via email, I found them to be helpful and courteous in resolving my issue. If you want to try and save some money, look for a close out or refurbished model. It won’t have everything the brand new units have (software or other), but enough is included or downloadable to do the job. The caveat is the warranty period is usually shorter on refurbished models - 90 days for APC.

I use a Tripplite 1500VA online UPS for my home theater. I got it used for $150 after shipping off of eBay and replaced the cooling fan with a Panaflo fan. I control the speed of the Panaflo (it barely needs to turn on cool days) using a Zalman Fanmate 2.
Works great and best of all since it’s an active online UPS it provides my home theater equipment with a true sinewave, as opposed to what you get when you use an interactive UPS.
