I just found myself in a position where I am helping a bloke running a number of PC's in a local Historical Society,
It's a not for profit organisation & the poor bloke is on his own. Anyway I got them to purchase server & switch & we've just installed ubuntu 9.10 on the server.
I was wondering where can I get or where can I learn how to write some Login scripts for terminals to login to the server and then use an application like: Tellico ?
(all but a couple of the pc's on the Lan run Linux}
I've been running pc's & such for many years but I am a newbie when it comes to Ubuntu.

Any help would be much appreciated :)

Kind regards,
DAve

First of hardware support is not totally Ubuntu responsibility the problem is that most drivers are write by the community not by the makers of the hardware.
second of the goal of Ubuntu is not to become a other apple there is already a apple.

Lisa: Lockergnome's Linux Fanatics is working on providing the easiest, most comprehensive list of common fixes out there. Just give us some time, you might be surprised. :)

In the meantime, be it geekier than I use to help people, this is also a good place to get some help:
https://help.ubuntu.com/

I would be first to agree than it is missing key information that most people are asking for; like compatible hardware for instance, but it's not too bad.

I agree, I work with inner city latino families and build a give them computers to access the information culture ( we call ourselves the techAmigos) and would be delighted to provide linux as an operation system since we can only get licences for a limited number of computers since we have no funding. But since many of these computers have a bios prior to 2000 linux is really flakey in installation. Sometimes it works, but on the majority of computers like Pentium 3 - 500 mhz machines the system fails in installation since the BIOS isn't supported.

I dunno I am a "let the damn thing work" kind of user and don't want to deal with the DRM, Virus, and Spyware issues of Windows. I couldn't afford a Mac when my last machine died, I have been using Ubtuntu for the last 4 months. I'll admit I had some trouble with the set up and had to have a friend help, but once an established on machine I found it far easier than deal with on a daily basis. The Wine interface when I did need to use a Windows program is great. I would highly recommend it to anyone. That said I am not a gamer, I use Open Office, web browsing, and a few other internet aps.

I dont know Chris,

I was far from an average user and set this up all by myself! I have had all sorts of problems with hardware ect, but have managed with just the use of the forums to get the problems all worked out
I do say tho, that maybe Ubuntu can work a bit more on getting the how tos in a better place or sticked, as there are far too many to follow, and one needs to really work at finding which are the best.
would love to win a new Linux machine, would make my year
:-)
