Troubleshooting Adobe Acrobat 8 Problems
Chris | Live Tech Support | Video Help | Add to iTunes
http://live.pirillo.com/ - Alex has called in with a problem regarding Adobe Acrobat Pro 8. Unfortunately, it’s not one I’ve heard of or come across. It may be a situation where he has to wait for an update from Adobe.
Every time Alex starts up his newly purchased Adobe Acrobat Professional 8, it will give him an error message that “Adobe has encountered a serious error….”. He clicks out of it, and the program closes. Then… a Windows memory error comes up! He’s tried uninstalling, but it won’t let him. An update to version 8.1 is when the errors started, and rolling back actually made it worse.
I advised Alex to try running it under Windows Compatibility mode. In order to do this, you locate the actual program .exe, and right click it. Choose “Properties” and then in the “Compatibility” tab, you can choose to have the program run under a different Operating System. Now of course, it doesn’t actually use a different OS. What Compatibility Mode does is to make the program THINK it’s using something else. Unfortunately, this didn’t work for Alex, either.
I have a feeling he’s going to have to wait for Adobe to come out with a fix for this problem. Thankfully, Alex had the presence of mind to send Adobe a lengthy email telling them in detail what the problem is. If any of you have ideas, or have seen this problem before, please let us know. Drop in the chat room, send me an email, or leave me a video response!

I bought Abode Acrobat 8 and it just gives the same error
message Alex got after finishing the installation (it also had trouble closing down when told to do so). The same thing (including trouble closing) has now happened with the Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional trial version I downloaded from Adobe today.
One suggestion from a friend is that maybe there is a non comptability problem involing the mouse and/or the video card.

I am also having problems with Acrobat Professional v8.01.
We have site licences for Acrobat 6 & 7 but there was a copy of v8 included with Creative Suite 2.3 so I installed it. It worked fine until the auto-update to 8.01 happened, then every time I try to access a setting, like change scanners, the program gives an error message and shuts down.
I’ve reinstalled it twice now, this time keeping it at v8.0 by hitting the cancel button each time the Adobe Updater starts up. :(

Sorry to have to join this little pity party, but I have the same problem with Acrobat Pro 8 on a Dell Inspiron 6000 running WXP. The same problem is being experienced by Mac OS users who say that they can fix the problem by disabling the Updater.exe. I can’t find how to do this in windows. Does anyone know how to do it?

I am a computer software engineer for the Alabama Medical Board. I have a user that is using Adobe 8.1 Professional with a Canon 9080C Scanner. The scanner scans fine, but it takes over 3-5 minutes to display the .pdf. It just hangs there waiting. I have uninstalled 8.1 Professional,
then reinstalled it - same problem. Uninstalled 8.1 Professional and installed 8.0 standard - again, same problem. She previously had 6.0 and everything worked. We upgraded her to 7.0 and began having problems. Adobe told us to upgrade to 8.0 professional - and it has not worked properly since. Any gurus out there have a clue?

I am not sure if the problem I am having is related to what is being described. Acrobat Elements become non funtional so rather than try to fix it I decided to upgrade to Acrobat Professional 8.0. It downloaded fine (three times!), but when I try to install it (four times) I get Error 1460: Could not wite to Threading Model to key\Software\Classes\……\InprocServer32. I have no idea how to fix this and have not been able to find any helpful information on any Adobe or Microsoft Website or from any tech support people. Any clues?
Thanks!

Hi All
Research elsewhere states that it is an issue with AMD processors and or the copy protection adobe use which happens after the updrade from 8 to 8.01. I can’t find the solution other than don’t let it upgrade.

You must activate to use this version.
I believe the best way to do this is over the phone.

Great to hear that I’m no the only one having problems. After having Acrobat 3D 8.0 crash on me several times, I ‘tried’ to uninstall the program and now I get to live with the lingering effects of Adobe and it’s mongering of my system on a daily basis.
Just imagine right clicking or using the Del key and each time you do so, a installation prompt appears asking for the Acrobat msi file. Trust me…it doesn’t exist on my system or can be accessed via the downloaded installation files.
Couple this, with the fact that I have followed Adobe’s manual uninstall instructions to the “T” (Reader is gone too) and this Adobe Acrobat continues to haunt my system like a Dead Spirit back from the afterlife!
For those adventurous enough check out:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb400658&sliceId=2
(IMO looks like more Registry Deletions are required than given here)
Ok, you say, just download and install the current version. Sounds easy, yes? ….With anticipation the install file expands the files into some unknown temp directory, taking about 2 minutes to do so. The Anticipation builds as the bar rises up to the 100% mark.
97%……98%….99%……………………..Complete! And then what happens……?
Pooof…..NOTHING! no install, a couple folders added that were erased in the manual install……No prompts, no boxes, no installation box, Adobe Installation just silently vanishes and I’m left with the feeling that Adobe has dangled my own bookbag in front of me and then ran off as I was close to grabbing it. LOL
ARRRRGHHHHHH….Now Adobe HAUNTS me with every Right Click or press of the Delete Key…….
Thanks for all the Frustration Adobe. My belief is that with all the program imbreeding Adobe is now committing with its assimilation of Flash, Dreamweaver products, etc…..Adobe products will increasingly become a mess for more users as times rolls on.
Sometimes Bigger,Better and More are not BEST!
Take Care,

18th oct 2007.
I have just downloaded the Acrobat 8 free trial which claims to be a full working copy.
When evr i try to enter the SECURE option it tells me the program must stop and dies on me.
And today the same thing is happening when I click on the DOCUMENT header to say get a watermark.
I thought it might be that I do not get the fully functional programme until I pay up.
However seeing the comments now, I am becoming hugely reluctant to invest some serious dosh in what seems to be a great utility.
It seems I DO have the FULLY functional program and that it is flawed.
And I was getting close to investing. Time to stand still and keep my money in my pocket.!!!

Hello,
I am having the same problem that the rest of you have but mine started when I downloaded the “Free Trial” that you have a link to above. I purchased an older version and now neither of them work. I began to think this was Adobe’s way of extorting us to upgrade but now it just looks like a glitch that they should have caught before they made it available. I certainly will think long and hard before I purchase anything from them again.

I’m emailing you because Adobe doesn’t want to hear from me unless I send them money. I guess they’re too big to care!
Anyhow, you seem like you might have an ear to listen.
Our hospital is running Wyse thin clients (which are older and have Windows CE on them and, I think only 32MB of memory).
Our server is Windows 2003 R2.
Since we upgraded Adobe Reader from 7 to 8 and then 8.1 the people on thin clients have a hard time reading pdf’s. It doesn’t matter if they
get it from a email, from the browser, or save it and then try to open
it. The files have some of the text readable and some of the text looks
like someone took a black marker and drew black rectangles over the text.
Then, if I scroll up and down in the file, some of the black rectangles
change color (such as looks like a green highlighter was used, or orange).
Even more scrolling and perhaps the top 1/2 of the document which couldn’t be read is now readable and now the bottom half which was readable is now with the colored rectangles.
I tried all the settings in the config of Adobe but didn’t find anything to
help.
I did find out if I rotated the image clockwise or counter clockwise,
the whole page is readable - but if I rotate it back it isn’t all readable.
The nurses are getting sore necks!!! (Rotating to read the pdf’s).
If I go to a real computer and run a terminal server session, the pdf’s
are fine. If I go to a real computer and run adobe it works, also.
Anyhow, if you don’t have any thin clients, you are lucky. If you do have
some - or have any suggestions, thanks for listening.

I have been trying to install Acrobat 8 Pro on my laptop and now I have all but given up. I have trawled the Internet for solutions to therror problem but it appears everyone else has the same problem.
Does anyone know if and how I can get a refund for this apparently useless program?
Once a company goes down this line, they open the doors to competitiors to fill their niche. How else does one explain how a recent version of a pouplar program fails to work with the latest popular operating system. This is a recipe for disaster and I think Adobe are like rabbits caught in the glare right now.

I just searched around google for people having this “Serious error” **** and it looks like my boss isn’t the only one having problems. It looks like the issue comes up mostly on Vista machines, but still some Windows XP boxen. I’ve got 8.1 installed on my machine (WinXP Pro Corp) and it works fine.
Anyone surprised Vista is ******** you over again? Dump that POS and go back to XP, it’s not worth these headaches.

You know.. I just had the same issue! I’ve had CS3 installed for a couple months now. Everything is great (except photoshop crashing on me 4 times a day!!). I decided to download a trial of Acrobat 3D, thought maybe it would be a cool way to show our product in a 3D image. I installed it and promptly after it uninstalled Professional 8, which I expected, 2 different versions of the same product of course it would uninstall Pro, to install 3D. The problem is When i started up 3D i got an error stating acrobat could not find some .dll file. I couldn’t get the trial of 3D to work, so i uninstalled it and reinstalled Acrobat 8 Pro. Now ever since then, no matter if I uninstall and reinstall, install from disk, install from Desktop, etc. I get the Serious error every time I start up Acrobat 8 Pro. I’m just confused as to why it’s worked fine until I tried to do the trial of 3D, and now it won’t work at ALL.

Having the exact same problems as mentioned by everyone else. Ever since I installed CS3 months ago, whenever I right click or delete or try to do just about anything Adobe Acrobat kicks up the windows installer. It’s SOOO frustrating and there seems to be no fix in sight. *sighs*

I am a computer software engineer as well, let me tell you a few things, This software is not only faulty in Windows Vista, but in XP as well, so we know for a fact its not a Vista only problem so making it think its another OS will not work as a fix.. Now, about the software fixes, there aren’t any yet Adobe “has no idea what we are talking about”. What we (me and my 26 fellow techs) have tried to figure out is what is the main reason and when it happened (duh!) This is what we found out.
1. There are multiple types of errors, everything from a “memory error” followed by a set of windows errors, to a “invalid Registration Code” error.
2. Program shuts down after about 10 secs after the process is started, regardless if the software opens completely or not. If it does open completely and u start using the program, it wont shut down till you don’t do anything.
3. This problem affected all 380 (381 with mine) computers in the network when updates where made, but did not show problems till after the windows Malicious software removal tool was installed.
4. Removing the program reinstalling did not help us at all.
5. Rolling back 15 computers to previous version still created the same problem.
6. Erasing ALL traces in the registry of Adobe software, including any other CS3 and CS2 programs, also did not help.
7. We got a test computer (mine unfortunately) and reprogrammed the WHOLE thing from Windows XP Pro without updates (SP2) and installed the software (without updates) and BOOM! it works perfectly again…….
Now i know we cant keep our computers without updates, it just wouldn’t be right…. now the next step is to find out what update is making this whole mess!
If anyone is willing to help me and my crew is welcomed.
Our plans.
1. Do updates one by one….figure out what is causing our issue.
2. Get a guy to look at any software/ Hardware compatibility issues ( oh yeah some software doesen’t like our hardware.)
3. Never buy Adobe products. Well we really cant do that, our whole company runs on Adobe software :(

***Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro ’serious error’ message in Windows Vista Ultimate requiring reinstallation***
After scouring the Internet for hours for a solution to this propblem, I finally arrived at a website where I found more or less the following instructions which I applied in roughly these stages:
1. I installed Adobe Acrobat 8 Reader
2. I installed Acrobat 8 Pro restarting as required.
3. I used either program’s ‘Update’ link in ‘Help’ to download/update to Acrobat 8.1 Pro
4. Still using the ‘Update’ link, I downloaded a Windows Vista patch from the Adobe website (sorry, unable to recall the specific URL).
5. Tried using Acrobat 8 Pro. I still got the ’serious error’ message and advise to reinstall so I closed the program.
6. I navigated to my C: drive, then opened ‘Program files’, looked for Acrobat 8 Pro folder and found the ‘exe’ file for Acrobat 8.1 Pro.
7. I right clicked on the ‘exe’ file then clicked ‘Properties’. Then looked for the link to ‘run the program in compatibility mode for Windows XP professional’ and checked the boxes.
8. I closed properties, exit the folder, Program files and C: drive.
9. upon launching Acrobat 8 Pro, It requested to be activated which i completed and it has worked since.
10. Hopefully, i should have no further problems. If I do, Ill come back to let you know.
PS: “Please note i am not an IT professional and do not intend to have given any reader professional advice. neither is the above intended to be representations that following the steps will fix any similar or different problems on your computer.”

Once I installed my Adobe Acrobat Pro v 8..every document looks as if it were washed in shades of greens. Nothing I can do makes them appear their normal color.
I have been unable to find out anything about this on the Adobe page, which is very annoying as I know of a few other people who have experienced this as well.
I see one person posted earlier that theirs looked like it had been highlighted with a green marker.
Does anyone have any suggestions on this issue?

The problem is an incompatibility between Acrobat Reader 8 and Acrobat 8. The reader works through Acrobat when you have it installed. You don’t need reader when you have Acrobat. So, go to control panel, list programs installed, uninstall Acrobat reader 8 or 8.1 whatever you have. Reboot and follow the Acrobat popups that repair your Acrobat 8 installation. Reboot and it will work fine. Now you can go to About Acrobat, check for updates, and install 8.1 and then 8.1.1 This will bring you up to date and everything should work. Have fun.

Having similar problem with Adobe Reader 8. (Using it to fill out forms from IRS website) Then tried to open one of my saved documents using Adobe Reader and got a “License Agreement not accepted. The program will now close.” Thankfully I found this site and read Chucks comment on DEC 31 2007. So I opened my Acrobat Reader (version 5) and was able to open and work with my forms. Thanks Chuck and thanks Chris I think I’ll wait to do any more installing or updating until AFTER my taxes are done. Thanks again.

I have recently started using Acrobat Pro 8 and it is nice, but difficult to figure out for myself, a first time user. You might need to try Forms > Run Form Field Recognition before being able to edit the form.
My problem is that I am creating forms in Acrobat 8 but users with Acrobat 6.0 do not get the input fields to complete the forms. Another user got the input fields but when the cursor is there, it does not let the user input data to the form.

I used your compatability mode tip for running Acrobat 8 in Vista (despite downloading the patch to 8.1.2 it still hangs and freezes), and it goes like the wind now, I choose compatibility with Windows XP service pack 2 and it works now. Thanks.
go to my computer, double click on the C: drive, navigate to program files, adobe, acrobat 8, then right click on the exe file (it’s the one with the adobe logo on it) then choose properties. click on the compatibility tab, then choose the operating system your PC ran under before you upgaded to Vista. Don’t know if this will work with a PC that came with vista installed, mine was a laptop with a free Vista upgrade from xp SP2

Hi,
Compatibility mode did not work for me, and I don’t understand what Pedro Sarrao meant by his fix. But…
Adobe released a patch. it FIXED THE ISSUE for me. I was running Vista on a Dell Inspiron w/ AMD64 chip, Acrobat Standard 8.1:
Patch is here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3750
I ran the patch as administrator. It took about 90 sec and looked like it was stuck but finally command window disappeared. You don’t get a notification that it’s done, the window just disappears. See instructions beforehand, you’re supposed to stop the licensing service first, I forgot and it worked anyway. Reboot required after the patch. When you reboot and start it again, it prompts you to activate (it sends your lic key to Adobe). Hooray.

The following may be of assistance to readers…….
Having nearly pulled all my hair out trying to get Acrobat 8.1 professional to run but kept coming up with the ’serious error, has to close - cannot write to memory’ etc, I found from a variety of forums and even Adobe’s web site, that this was a well-known problem.
After uninstalling and reinstalling a number of times and getting nowhere, I tried the following:
instead of uninstalling Acrobat through the control panel, I moved the Acrobat 8 folder to the recycling bin; uninstalled Adobe reader 6; cleared any remaining Adobe folders (I had an Adobe 5 folder hanging around) to the recyling bin, and also the two Adobe files in the Flexnet folder. Then I ran a registry checking program and let it sort out any errors.
I had another try at installing using a ‘typical’ install this time (other times had been ”complete’), and it went through without any problem, calling up the activation/registration page when first started.
(For info I run XP SP2 with 512M memory)

My case is worst. I installed them and try to launch it but it hang over there. I tried to uninstall but it also hang. Cannot finish the uninstallation. I even tried out the knowledge base from adobe to perform manual uninstall. Guess what? is is suck! I cannot delete the AcroIEHelper.dll. This is a nightmare. i even tried to use unlocker to remove but no go. I even tried to use safe mode and recovery console but it always show access denied.! I am under administrator account!
I also tried to use Your Uninstaller 2008 to remove it but failed. This is my newly installad window XP with AMD X2 5000 and 2GB Ram.

I used the Windows Install Cleanup utility (support.microsoft.com/kb/290301) to insure that previously uninstalled versions of adobe acrobat were removed from my computer. I found Adobe CS3 (I once had the trial version) was still in the registry and the utility cleaned it for me.
Now, I can install Adobe 8.1 without getting an error that a higher version is already installed.
This may work for your problems.

Acrobat Professional 8 really sucks! I can’t remove some files on my harddisk and some registry entries which remained there after an uninstall procedure. I tried several cleaning programs as cs3cleaner, Windows Cleanup, ccleaner, unlocker to unlock the file access, I went in safe mode trying to remove the read only check … but with no hope. I searched for threads or services which denies you to delete these entries and files, but I didn’t find them…
Now I installed the free pdf-Reader Foxit reader, because Acrobat always crashes.
