Five Windows Security Recommendations
- Watch what you download! – Most of the freeware P2P programs come bundled with malware. Even if the program itself isn’t, much of what you will download is.
- Keep your Windows up-to-date – Using Internet Explorer, click on Tools>Windows Updates and install all updates listed.
- Control your ActiveX downloads – Again in Internet Explorer, go to Internet Options > Security > Internet and click on the “custom level” button. In the ActiveX section, tell your browser to always prompt before downloading ActiveX controls.
- Use an Anti-Virus program – Trend Micro’s AntiVirus is essential security you need to automatically guard your data against malicious viruses, worms, Trojan horse programs, and spyware.
- Use a Firewall – I don’t recommend the firewall that comes built in to Windows. It doesn’t block everything that may try to get in, and the entire firewall is written to the registry. There are several excellent free firewalls available, including ones from Sunbelt and Comodo.
