TopGear is a Very Popular Show Among Geeks

Top Gear is an award-winning BBC television series about motor vehicles, mainly cars. The show is presented by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, James May and The Stig, an anonymous test driver. It is apparently quite popular amongst Geeks, to the point of some of them being rabid fans.

My absolute favourite show. - Evangeline

love that show - jason burton

You’re missing out, Chris. Top Gear is awesome. I’ve seen it having the same ratings with Americans as most American Drama shows. - Shafiq Jetha via twhirl

Isn’t there an American version due out soon? - Brian Sullivan

The Stig owns - AlexScoble(Robert’sBro)

No offense, but I imagine an american version will preserve none of the qualities that TopGear has. For a start, Clarkson, May and Hammond are a completely irreplaceable combination (even though Clarkson is actually a very carefully crafted character, and nothing like his real self). Then there’s the heritage of the show itself, it was after all born from the ashes of a "normal" motoring magazine show. I’m sure a US version would be great….for America. It wouldn’t be Top Gear though - Slippy Lane

+1 Alex - The Stig is, in fact the world’s greatest racing driver robot, which is ironic when you consider that Top Gear’s main "competitor" is Fifth Gear, which is presented by Tiff Needell, a man commonly acknowledged to be the world’s WORST racing driver! :-) - Slippy Lane

Have you watched this show? What’s your take on it? Do you feel an American version could be just as good?

Top Gear is one of the best shows on television. And even though they are coming out with an American version, NOBODY can replace Jeremy, James and Richard. They are what make Top Gear what it is. I really hope they bring Top Gear Live Tour to the United States, and more importantly to the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex so I can see it, but even though I will try to be supportive of Top Gear America, it won’t be able to replace the true Top Gear and its gang.

Clarkson is a very real enigma, that’s not crafted that’s how awesomely rude and brash he is…..the show is the best thing on British TV…legendary..

By far, my favourite show on TV. And the production values are incredible.

Torrent away!

Its my fav show too. Not sure how an American would be!

It’s one of my fav shows as well! Love it!

Hopefully they *won’t* make a US version. The brit humor is part of its beauty! Of course the beautiful photography, cars and even the anonymous “Stig” could be replicated, but there’s no way you can replace Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May… There’s just nooo way! :)

The personalities make the show. Plus the budget, contacts, and honesty - They will say that a particular model BMW or Lexus is a POS if thats what they think.

They are also very very un PC. An example of this is when May and Clarkson became the first people to drive to the North Pole. Once they realised they were in (or rather over) international waters, and were out of any Drink Driving jurisdiction, out came the gin and the whiskey. They’d have Palin’s husband (not necessarily her) on the show just to help trash some snow.

for the show to be just as good in the usa it will need the exact same hosts, thats what makes the show.

Love the show, but too bad I can only watch it on Youtube.

Coming from the UK, I grew up with Top Gear (albeit in the older form until J Clarkson brought it back to life)… watch it all the time.. and yes, there is an Australian version (where I am now) which starts in a couple of weeks…

The stig is Nigel Mansel….

Definitely one of my top 5 shows. I don’t miss it (or the repeats on Dave)

This has been a favorite show of mine since early high school!

I’ve heard the American show has good chemistry, but I think American sponsors are going to ruin the feel of the show. Go Hamster

I absolutely love Top Gear, even though they (Jeremy) often trash BMWs. My car was on the sub-zero wall, so that makes me even happier!

One of my favourite episodes was when they put a Lotus Exige up against an Apache helicopter. They wanted to see if the Exige could manoeuvre quickly enough to prevent the Apache from getting a lock on it.

How many other car shows do anything like that?

Clarkson is fantastic - and the production values of Top Gear are unsurpassed - even non-car geeks can totally enjoy this show. Imagine watching 3 wacky british guys chop up “people carriers” (i.e. vans) and make them convertibles - then they have a contest that includes running their contraptions through a wild animal park and a car wash (which they set on fire, btw). Or purchasing a $1000 alfa romeo and trecking it across the whole of africa… or turning some wacky car into the space shuttle and launching it!

Abso-lutely-F’ing hilarious show that you must watch.

Now, I’m confident Adam Carolla and crew can do a stellar job with the US version - I hear they’ve taken on some of the BBC producers - they’ve got to know they cannot F it up.

I have to first say that I’m female and American. Top Gear is my favorite show on tv and also my 17 year old daughter’s favorite show. Can’t get enough of the boys. I think it is great fun and as far as Jeremy goes I don’t think he is all that he portrays on the show. I’ve done quite a bit of reading about all 3 of them and I think a lot of what he says is just for show . I think the American version of the show won’t be as good You can’t replace the originals and have the same chemistry.

I lived in London for 6 months and it was by far my favorite show. I do not get BBC america now that I’m stateside again. I would love to see an American version but I doubt it will be able to measure up to the British version. My favorite show was the one were they went caravaning (camping) and burnt down the camper

To Slippy Lane,

Your comparison to Stig with Tiff maybe off, I believe it should be Stig to Jason Plato. :)

This is one of my favourite tv programmes. I have watched it on BBC2 for years. There is going to be a new series in the Autumn around October in the UK so I guess it should start appearing on BBC America too. I think an American version would not work at all. Clarkson, Hammon and May make this show unique and they cannot be replicated. I think the Original UK version should be broadcast in the US.

I love Top Gear, have watched every episode, even back when Tiff was still on the show and Jeremy was… well a bit younger looking :)

All their challenges is what inspired me to do the ‘How to buy a car for $1,000′, also currently working on some other Top Gear inspired projects, lots of fun.

A U.S. Top Gear could never be as good, but it will definitely fill a niche here that has been vacant for too long. In other news I am very sad that I will not be a host… :)

A POS for this POS blog

POS just like the dancing Matt

Being British I get to watch it weekly on BBC 2 Sunday at 20:00, and I love it, but I do have to admit that an american version wouldn’t be as good.

Jeremy Clarkson hates America and tries to drill that home in every show. Gets a little old. Stick to cars and not political jabs and it would be a better show.

I don’t think an American version will be as good as the UK original. An Australian version has already started filming and will screen it’s first episode in two weeks time….I guess we all will see what the localised versions of the show will be like then.

They have said they aren’t trying to clone Clarkson, Hammond, May and the Stig. Not holding my breath on either the Aussie or US versions to be that great, but you never know. I really do hope they don’t stuff it up.

Cheers

I don’t think the American version will be good, same with the Australian one, the BBC have too much money to play with and topgear UK just does things (like going to the north pole) that I think the US and AUS won’t do.

Top gear is the best geek show around. no way could we do it as good as the brits.

i always watch it every sunday at 8 and then watch it on dave…can not get enough of them xD

There is NO WAY that a US version of Top Gear will survive..and it will be absolute rubbish. About as uncool a show as the Austin Martin DB9 is cool. Clarkson is hilarious, despite his obvious American animus (although his favourite POV is American built….) Hammond is my favourite and the true Rocketman :), and James May is as funny as he plays a git but isn’t really one.
This will go over as well as the US version of Coupling, Cracker, and the horrible conversion of Chess back in the 80’s.
Just keep bringing the true version over on BBCA (but closer to their airing in the UK) and that is sufficient.

What Do You Think?
