But real estate is very expensive regardless of which Island. Then everything costs more because nearly everything must be shipped there and they haven't found any 18 wheelers to cross the ocean. So things cost more, but salaries aren't as high as the cost of living. It is less expensive to heat and cool than the mainland, but that's about it. There are a lot of good things that merit comment: The sense of Ohana (family) is very strong and the complete natural beauty is breathtaking. But keep in mind that the population is relatively low. I lived on Kauaii where the population was but 80k along with about 1M tourists. Get past the tourists and all is well. Were it not so expensive, I’d live there. Went there to surf for the most part and see a girlfriend who moved there. Coming from California the first thing I found was that it is a small area. Drive an hour and you are back where you started from. They call it rock fever so I came home. I've been back several times but I couldn't live there. Nice place to visit though.
