I use mail program that come with Leopard. But I use Gmail account. All I did just enter Username and password into that program. So, I don’t know if I use Gmail or apple mail really. I works GREATTTTTTTT.

I can’t speak from Mac Mail in Tiger, but I switched from Thunderbird to Mac Mail in Leopard and I’ll never be going back. The seamless integration with the OS, from clicking on a date to make an auto iCal entry (which gives it Outlook style functionality, not fully, but close enough to me that its worth while) Quicklook which is a good send for attachments, easy to use multi-email account support etc..

• Images pasted into Apple Mail are automatically converted to .tif format. If I wanted them as a .tif, I would have saved them that way.

Not true. Just tested it by sending a jpeg to 5 people, 2 on Mac and 3 on PC as well as BCC’ing myself. Everyone got it as a jpeg

• With Apple Mail, you can only send messages that are plain text or Rich Text Format. You can’t send an HTML email.

I have, at present, about 30 gig of ’stuff’ in my Mail folder. Just taking a quick look through and a couple of my mailing list folders have >25000 emails. No slowdowns that I’ve ever noticed.

Not quite sure what you’re referring to here. I compose an email, I send it, folks never complain about the ‘format’ on the receiving end so I assume that Apple has it configured to send properly. But, like I say, I’m not sure what you mean.

• If a message has styled text and images both, Apple Mail will send it out twice. With Eudora, you can send them as one regular message.

Mail has never done this for me, sending a message twice, regardless of configuration. You must have the ‘no extra cost scramblizing feature’ installed, or something.

For me, Mail ‘just works’

I like Eudora but I love Thunderbird. I find Eudora’s UI and just not user friendly. I also use linux so its nice to have a cross platform email client. yes, i know Eudora is cross platform but it doesn’t run natively on linux. :( What is your opinion: Eudora, Thunderbird, or Outlook?

You say that photos PASTED into Mail are converted to TIFF format, and if you’d wanted TIFF you’d have SAVED it that way. If you SAVED it a specific way and attached it, you get that. Copy/paste is NOT saving.

You can’t send HTML emails in Leopard? I though Stationary was HTML emails. (Though composing an HTML email from scratch is an issue, so you get 80% correct on that one.)

Apple Email is slower in Leopard? Huh? I have tens of thousands of messages in various mailboxes and don’t see the slowdown of which you speak. (And searching in Leopard is VERY fast.)

I think you posted half-crazed on this one.

We’ve used Eudora since transferring over from Pine years ago. 4.2.6 is running nicely on Tiger (10.4.11), and we have no intention of changing to another e-mail app until/ unless Apple decides to screw up our capability to use Eudora in some follow-on upgrade of the OS.

Eudora’s “Junk Mail” capability is better than any other we’ve tried. It’s very easy to pull up “Junk,” run down through the messages and delete the 99.995% of the spam we receive – - letting us pull out the legitimate messages that the filter threw into Junk.

And, sending attachments is a breeze. The Mailbox and Address Book sections are just what they should be.

Your using Apple Mail with Gmail’s email service. So your email client is Apple Mail.

until they allow smtp or something similar, you cant.

I will have to try Eudora. I tried to find screenshots of it first. It will work with Google’s IMAP right? I wonder how thunderbird stacks up to Eudora? Good tips.

btw…does ANYONE know how to use a free yahoo account with Apple Mail? Please don’t tell me to upgrade to Yahoo Plus. I’ve heard that already, but it’s not worth it.

I have used Eudora since I don’t know when, maybe since Windows 3.11. I find it simpler and, in the past, more feature rich than Outlook Express. Also it was always more secure and less of a target for the bad guys, who seem to concentrate on scamming Microsoft products.

I quit Eudora due to lack of UTF-support. I actually need UTF, because it’s the only way to write in Sámi.

I’ve been using Eudora since Eudora Lite 2.0.
I love the user interface, the spam filtering, the wonderful non-proprietary plugin availabilities, such as , Search and Replace, Remove Quote, Unwrap Text, Toggle Case. I’ve tried Outlook, Outlook Express, but not Outlook 2007. I love the Mailbox management.

Confused….
- I have pasted JPEGs and they have remained JPEGs (In Apple Mail)
- In Safari, I can choose to enclose the current page as an email – which makes it HTML email. Unfortunately, you are right, you cannot edit it as HTML in mail, but you can easily paste in any HTML page and it will render properly
- Maybe it is because I have Leopard, but I have over 50,000 saved emails on my MacBook Pro going back 7+ years (the Outlook Express Mac>Entourage>Mail transition, yeah yeah I should clean it up) and I do NOT see a slowdown
- The mail message may not have center/left/right, but it has color, fonts, you can set bold/italic/etc – this is a Mac, not Windows. You don’t need a little toolbar icon for every single function – I am typing, I want bold, Command-B does just fine… anyone who moves to the toolbar to click the “bold” icon deserves Windows…
- That is a feature allowing your intended audience to have a text version show up if they desire to use a NON HTML email client. I would rather they see that plain text than a bunch of tags mixed in in the text because their email client cannot render it. If there text based client is worth anything, it will properly handle that and only display/retrieve the text based version of the email….

There are plenty of things to not like in Mail, but that list was ridonculous….

it is not possible at all unless you have Plus…You need POP3 service for the yahoo account in order to use it on a separate client. Yahoo ONLY supplies POP3 functionality with the Plus version…which is another reason why I hate Yahoo. When I used yahoo I have at least 50 new spam emails a day…and with GMail I get maybe 1 a week usually not even 1 every couple weeks. Gmail also supports POP3 for free.

I use Gmail, but I’ve had Yahoo for a long time, so I get most of my email through that account.

There is a program out there to make Yahoo support POP3, but it isn’t updated anymore and was really buggy.

exactly…which is why it is best to just avoid Yahoo mail. :) My yahoo account gets tons of emails every day mostly spam so I just abandoned it entirely and started fresh with gmail.

I have leopard, — my gmail email, my o2 email and my apple email are all controlled by mail. I love mail. Mail in leopard is awesome. I liked it in tiger, but leopard is far superior.

I wish I had that option, but mixed in with the spam I get important emails too.

I’ve tried Eudora, Thunderbird, Exchange,… (sorry, I’m not an Apple user) and I think the best option is TheBat because it is a highly configurable program.

For example, I usually send emails in different languages (spanish, english, german) depending on the addressee. TB allows me to have different templates depending on the folder where the message is stored, the addresse, the account I’m using and so on. I really need that feature (amongst many others) and I haven’t found it in any other mail client.

yeah i know it says keep in mind that he’s using tiger and not leopard, however….none of those things are a problem in leopard. Pasting an entire webpage into an email couldn’t be simpler. I’ve never had a problem with mail working slowly. Also, one of the best features i’ve found so far with Mail for the mac, is i never get spam……….ever. Maybe that’s Mail, maybe that’s gmail or both, i’m not sure, but i’ve never recieved a spam email in my Mail inbox on the mac

Calgary Guru here… Since this video was recorded, I’ve since moved to a newer Mac that came with Leopard… So far, I’ve been sticking with the Apple Mail that comes with Leopard and as Chris said, it has finally received some attention and a lot of my objections about the program have been rectified. Also, being an INTEL Mac, I went with Apple Mail over Eudora 6.2.4 as that program would have run in emulation. So far so good, although I still miss some features I had in Eudora. – Calgary Guru
