Tips for Girl Gamers

This may come as a surprise, but I am neither a girl, nor a Gamer! However, I do have an excellent top 5 list here, sent in by a community member… who happens to be a girl gamer!

  • Don’t underestimate yourself. I know my first time in game, I gave everyone in the room that was “specking” (watching) me a real LOL. I had no idea what I was doing, however I stuck with it and to my surprise I got tips! People offered their advice and knowledge of the game I was playing. Pretty soon, you too will be a force to be reckoned with.
  • Join a “Clan or Guild”. When I first started gaming, I had no idea what these words meant to the gaming world, or that they even existed. It’s basically a group of people who play together. It’s really like one big family (or small depending on the clan). From a clan I learned a lot about the teamwork aspect of gaming. I’ve become to know some of my clan-mates so well, that I am currently trusting one of them to build my computer. It is really a great experience for gaming.
  • Learn as much about the game as possible. A lot of games give you the option to go into “training” or “single player” modes. I found these modes helpful to learn the maps and their layouts. That way, when I go into an actual game, I won’t have to wonder where to go or what the objective is. Watching those who are experienced at the particular game you are playing, is helpful as well. You can study their movements, strategies, and adapt them to your personal play style.
  • Don’t offer your gender unless asked. Most people would hear me say that and think that they already know the reason I say this. I don’t say this because you automatically make yourself a target by admitting your gender. Although, that is something that females do have to deal with, I have not personally encountered it enough to consider it a real problem. The reason I do say this, however is there are a lot of people who will pretend to be female in game. Why? I don’t know.. some expect that it will get them some sort of special treatment, however lame it may seem. Offering your gender seems a little bit too obvious that you are looking for attention just based on your gender. I, use voice chat in lots of games I play, so I do get asked if “I’m a girl” a lot. Then, I will say yes. Most people I have ran across find it a great thing. My in game name in all games I play is XX0wnsXY (as well as in #Chris. Most people don’t think twice about my name.. however there are a few who understand that XX are female chromosomes and XY are male Not obvious, however, anyone who knows their biology can know the meaning of it. I’ve had quite a few compliments on the brilliance of that! (not tooting my horn).
  • Don’t let the bad experiences discourage you. While gaming has, for the most part, been a wonderful experience, I have had a good share of derogatory comments, insults, and doubt, thrown my way. Many people have not accepted the fact that females are entering the gaming scene, now more than ever. Maybe it’s fear of change? Maybe they’re skeptics due to those people who do take advantage of the fact that females are rare to gaming. Either way, you have to have fun with it. “Owning” a person or two who makes these comments, usually shuts them up real quick. Otherwise, there are options such as “mute” and “ignore” in most games to rid of those you do not desire to converse with.

Never underestimate female gamers, they often times feel they have more to prove and can be better players in more cases then male players, as they are willing to take risks that other players may not.

I met a girl in-game during the Day of Defeat craze… she was only 12!
Apparently she was playing during a sleep-over and decided to use the mic to give us a play by play of what was going on over there while still pulling in the frags faster than most of the rest of us.
It really makes you think about your skills when a 12 yr old is pwning you while she’s the one distracted.

I want to thank all of you for taking the time to listen to the Top 5 that I submitted. I really do love gaming, and this is one small step I can take to make other females aware that it’s ACTUALLY fun once you try it. I was a skeptic once, as well. Although, I don’t have the time to commit to hard core gaming like some, It is deffinetly one of my favorite pass times. I want to thank Chris, as well, for accepting my top 5, and seeing enough in the entry I wrote, to broadcast. I look forward to watching this stream for a long time, keep it up!

oh shit well us girls are bad ass when it comes to video games, some of play cause they want attention but most of us just play cause its fun, and for me its fun, the only reason some girls piss you off is maybe cause you need to shut the fuck up about how a girl raped you in cod4 or halo, rainbow etc. or if she did better then you or you said something sexist, but yes if want to get raped by one hit me up sometime :P

1. Why would you get mad if there’s a girl on your team?

2. If you’re going to discriminate by gender, then the victim has every right to defend themselves or to be offended.

3. Put yourself in a girl gamer’s shoes. How would you feel if you were devoted to something and the opposite gender snubbed you for it?

Ugh… I dunno if it posted it the first time or not, so I’ll truncate what I said since I feel lazy.

Does this video make any other guy out there feel like we’re still treating girl gamers like they don’t exist at all / some mythical creature?

Of course, I mean that without any offense, but it just makes me feel like we still have yet to leave the “lol there aren’t any girl gamers on the interwebz” mentality…
