My tip would be to quickly visualize your ideas and plans in a drawing. There are some online tools that help you to make quick floorplans, my favorite one is http://www.floorplanner.com

Nice tips,

Simple but those are what most people forget and some dont realize most contractors might tell you this if you ask.

So always ask in advance what they think “YOU” should aks for.

If they tell you the truth (if you know)

Then theres a good chance they are a good company to work with.

Contact a local ASHI home inspector with the most experience via http://www.ASHI.org.
Ask her/him – Whose work do you like best?
Retain an ASHI inspector to do in-progress inspections.
Tell your building contractor that you expect all work to comply with local building codes and each component manufacturer’s specs AND that you will have your own inspector checking things out.

An alternative may be to find contractors (w/ recommendations) in the Seattle area via another feature we have called Services: http://tinyurl.com/24fdvj.

I wish I’d used “Services” to select my tax consultant this year, but I succumbed to TurboTax’s ease-of-use vs. using a consultant.

Call my brother-in-law. He is as honest as they come. He built my house and left me to do ALL the non-electrical wiring. In fact, I did most of the non-electrical wiring with him on his house… right next door.

I feel sorry for those of you that don’t have a licensed contractor for a brother-in-law/next door neighbor. It works great for me.
