THX Certified Speakers Unboxing

When I made the switch and bought the Mac, the speakers I had just wouldn’t cut it. So, I ordered new ones. I’ve been anxiously waiting for them to get here… and finally the wait is over.
After doing some research, I went with the Logitech Z-5500 THX-Certified 505-Watt 5.1 Digital Surround Sound Speaker System.
The technical details are as follows:
- 5.1 speaker system with 4 satellite speakers, center speaker, subwoofer, and Digital SoundTouch control center
- Connects to PCs, DVD players, CD players, portable MP3 players, and game consoles
- Digital SoundTouch unit controls volume, surround sound effects, and more
- Supports Dolby Digital, DTS, DTS 96/24, and Dolby Pro Logic
- 505 watts total system power (62 watts x 4, plus 69-watt center speaker and 188-watt subwoofer)
The new, larger 10-inch long-throw subwoofer driver with flared bass port delivers 188 watts of thunderous bass. Polished aluminum phase-plug satellites combine two drivers into one–the clarity of a tweeter with the richness and fullness of a separate mid-range. The Z-5500 Digital actively adjusts frequency response in real time for the cleanest, most accurate sound reproduction. The Digital SoundTouch Control Center lets you control volume to all speakers, set inputs, and much more. And the separate wireless remote is great for home theaters and video game consoles. Cloth grilles are removable for a pro-audio look. Pedestals rotate for easy wall mounting or desk placement. Center channel can be mounted on wall, above or below monitor. You can also simultaneously connect 6 audio sources including PCs, video game consoles, and DVD, CD & portable music players… and control it all from the Digital SoundTouch Control Center.

A friend of mine has bought those speakers and it sound great. But still bear in mine chris, as I said in your previous blog post before, keep your optical wire as short as possible to avoid data loss in the wire.

Hm, I’ve been researching sound systems. I’ll look into this one, to see what it’s like.
Problem is I don’t want too many wires. :( Wires going from one side of the room to the other is unacceptable. Thanks. :)

I bought the same set about a year ago. It’s a godsend. Currently hooked up to an Apple TV, PS3, and Wii. My G5 has an optical in/out, but I decided to use a 2.1 set.
I really had a hard time to put the subwoofer far far away.
Your neighbor will dislike you.

Yeah Logitech is pretty bad about replacing parts. I couldn’t find my G7 reciever and they were gonna make me buy an entirely new mouse, but luckally I found it.

Forget computer speakers. Speakers are speakers. Get a good pair of hifi stereo speakers from B&W, Infinity, Klipsch, Jean-Marie Reynaud, Dynaudio etc. coupled with a decent stereo amp and a decent DAC. You’ll get better space imaging from a good stereo set than one of those mass market 7 channel jobs made by manufacturers of computer peripherals.

Those magnets are pretty dam powerful. I gotta be careful when I put my pedals in the back of my amp box or else they’ll just go “clunk” to the back of the speakers…. and they’re only 450watts.

Congrats chris….but you should’ve bought a regular home theatre system…..these 5.1 computer speakers are good…but they can compete with the regualar home theatre systems….and speakers without stands is a big no no for me personally.

dude your a tard. it has tweeters, and yes it can hit 20,000hz, because it has tweeters i tested it. if it didn’t have tweeters then it would not get the THX certification. your just a fan boy who knows shit about audio and just buys by brad not stats!

bilyam it doesnt have tw. an THX certification doesnt care for that. but the system is so bad for its price. U can get far better stuff. The subwoofer is small doent go deep enough for movies. Amplification is awful. Bottom line u cant get good sound from speakers as big as oranges.

Miau56, if it doesn’t have a tw the how does it reach 20,000hz? a felted paper voice can’t reach 20,00hz. but if you look at the driver you will see a cone shaped ting where the dust cover would b, that is the tweeter, it works in a similar fashion to Tanoy speakers, but slightly differently because of patents put out by Tanoy (and the fact the Tanoy is high end and Logitech in not). the price is expensive if you by from Logitech, but if you look around a bit you can get it for about 50% less

Bilyam that system doesnt reach 20k within a 3db band. That is a Tang Band driver and that center pointy thing is the dust cap. Its not a coaxial driver. Plus if it has tweeter it must have xover as well since its not bi-amped. If u open it u wont find any xover. Its a simple widerange driver.

NO, thats incorrect, the little center pointy thing is called a phase plug, it ‘can’ infact reduce the higher frquencies…
The phase plug is mainly there to help the angular dispersion of the sound, all the soundwaves are directed straight out. My Z2300 has then and it also has NO tweeter, SO it sure as hell can’t hit the 20khz which its rated at, yet it STILL got the THX rating.

indeed phase plug its what it is.
