We never really know what’s going to happen on the weekly live show and this week is no exception. We’ll be taking live calls, of course, so have your dialing finger ready to punch 888.PIRILLO. There’s a very strong chance the military might behind Xbox 360 will be paying a visit to the studio this evening, although the exact details of the marching papers remain top secret so we can’t confirm or deny anything just yet.

The following are the show notes for the September 22nd, 2005 edition of the Chris Pirillo Show.

Sorry! Due to some moronic Sony Fanboys without girlfriends and nothing better to do than to deface this page we had to disable editing.

If you have information to add these show notes please join the #lockergnome chat and speak with usrbingeek or LordKat; or if neither are available in the chat e-mail steven at spamcop net

Chris is getting a new computer and New Service

Chris’s IBM Thinkpad developed a video problem and required service and his desktop is on its last leg. Long story short he is thinking about getting a new computer. Got any suggestions?

Suggestions from the chat:

  • ABS PC
  • Alienware
  • Velocity Micro
  • Voodoo

Chris is putting together a new service. If you’d like to try it out you can e-mail him at chris at pirillo dot com to request a link but at this point, please don’t link to it anywhere as its not ready to be blogged about.

Tonight’s Guest

Larry Hryb, aka MajorNelson.com, works at Microsoft and is the XBox Live Director of Programming.

Larry brought his XBox 360 Dev Kit with him to Chris’s house. Larry stressed that the XBox 360 is a great standalone system and doesn’t require XBox Live.

Another cool feature of the XBox 360 is you’ll be able to chat with friends on your XBox Live buddy list not only when playing game but also when doing other things like watching a DVD movie.

Larry apologised to Chris for saying that his podcast was horrible and for ripping on him and Ponzi during his July 10th, 2005 Major Nelson podcast. Chris said he didn’t hear that episode, but will listen to it after Larry leaves.

Tonight’s Calls

  • ____ from Arkansas called into ask if his 20″ flat panel NEC monitor would have black bars on the top of his screen. Major Nelson wasn’t completely sure.

  • Joe from Minnesota asked if it will scale DVD’s. Major Nelson wasn’t sure.
  • ForbidenMaster from LA, CA asked how the XBox 360 will work with the iPod, will it read songs from the iPod firmware, or will you have to make a file in the hard drive part of the iPod. Major Nelson explained that you can just connect the iPod and the XBox will read the songs from the firmware and allow you to play them over the Xbox360 even during game play. Except you will NOT be able to play your iTunes DRM encrypted songs, only your MP3′s and WMA format. When playing music the 360 will just skip over the encrypted songs. This support isn’t just limited to the iPod as many portable devices are going to be supported.
  • CountryBoy asked if he knew anything about Halo3. Major Nelson had no information to share.
  • AJ from Sacromento asked what is going to happen with the core system not having a harddrive. Major Nelson didn’t think it was going to be an issue as the developers knew that the systems would be this way. AJ also asked if you would be able to save music from the iPod or a computer to the XBox. The Major explained that the XBox is a read only device but you could rip songs from a music CD with the Xbox360.
  • Dave from NY was wondering about people that keep their original Xbox and also buy an Xbox360, if they would be able to use their same gaming handle on both machines. Major Nelson explained that they would be able to use it on both but not at the same time.
  • ____ from XBoxRadio asked if there will be a web cam for the XBox. Major Nelson said that so far only a prototype for a webcam was shown at E3 but nothing official has been announced yet.

  • Seth wanted a hint about the launch titles. Major Nelson had no idea and if he did and told you he’d have to kill you.
  • SwordofDestiny wanted to know why a game’s sound is so choppy on his PC. Major Nelson suggested he get an XBox. Chris suggested any Creative Soundblaster card.
  • Scott from Sarasota, FL asked if his current Live Account would be usable on the Xbox360. Major Nelson said you’d be good to worry about it.
  • ___ from Utah called in for no reason and had no question.
  • Deago wanted to know what the sign up info would be like and what type of information you would have to provide. Major Nelson said you’d need a valid credit card and have to provide the basic billing information or have a valid Microsoft Passport account.
  • Yanick is going to get an Xbox360, Halo2 at launch, and XBox Live Gold. Major Nelson said he hasn’t announced the titles yet and he can’t say for sure it will work but theres a good chance.

  • Vick asked what they will be showing at XO5. Major Nelson wasn’t told anything because he’d balb so just watch Xbox.com and MajorNelson.com for news.
  • _____ wanted to know what Major Nelson thought about the NGS4 Trailer. Major Nelson thought it was a great piece of cinema.
  • _____ asked what the process would be for displenary action will be. Major Nelson said that you’d be able to rate them like on Ebay and you wouldn’t be matched with them again.
  • ____ with a fake accent wanted to know if there would be an XBox camera so he could see his goats. Again, web cams haven’t been announced yet.
  • Greg asked if it is possible to have 4 wired controllers. Major Nelson explained that you can only have 3 at launch but added how dumb only three wired controllers were and why didn’t they stick to just up to 4 wireless controllers.
  • _____ was wondering how the Xb0x 360 would work with the Silver accounts and if he could upgrade to a gold account. Major Nelson explained that they would be announcing the process in a few weeks and you should watch Xbox.com for news.

  • Philip asked about keyboards being used for game control. Major Nelson explained it completely up to the game developers. Philip also wanted to know if wireless keyboards will be supported. The Major hadn’t heard anything but wouldn’t be surprised that if it wasn’t supported.
  • Darnel asked how the XBox was received at the Tokyo game show. Major Nelson said that the Xbox360 both in Japan was jammed packed as they had 15 playable games. Sony was only showing a video and had no playable demos. The Major believe that the sales in the Asian market should be really strong.
  • Brandon first asked about the pricing, as you’re not getting much more for 399 over the 299 version. Major Nelson explained that Microsoft wanted to give consumers choice and they’re pricing the systems aggressively. Brandon also asked about backwards compatibility. Major Nelson couldn’t provide much information other than to say they’re working on providing compatibility to the most major and popular titles to date. Brandon also wanted to know how many games would be available at launch and again the Major had no idea right now. usrbingeek notes that Brandon is an idiot for defacing with a wiki!
  • Steven from South Carolina asked about the DVD formats and if there was a chance that they could switch to the HD DVD format in the future. Major Nelson explained that the Xbox360 is expandable and anything is possible. Steven also asked that Microsoft would unlock something a year after the systems are on the market. Major Nelson never heard anything about that and can’t think of anything that could possibly be done like that.
  • David from California asked what he can say to people saying that the Sony will be better than the Xbox360. Major Nelson explained that you’ll be playing games on your 360 for a long time while the Sony fans will still be waiting around and watching cutscenes trailers.
