Thursday 22 December 2005
Liz Lawley joins us on this week’s show for the pre-holiday party at the Pirillo house. Liz is probably best known in online circles for mamamusings, her blog about technology, academia, family and tangential topics. Liz also happens to be one of the people pushing to make MSN Search work better as part of the Microsoft Reasearch Social Computing Group while on sabbatical from her regular gig as Director of RIT’s Lab for Social Computing.
It’s rumored Robert Scoble may also drop by although no confirmed sightings have been validated at this time.
The following are the show notes for the December 22nd, 2005 edition of the Chris Pirillo Show.
Anyone that listens to the show may edit the show notes within 24 hours of the live show. No password is required. To prevent vandalism the show notes cannot be edited after the Friday evening following the live show.

Jason Calacanis
Jason Calacanis of Weblogs, INC called into talk about ripping HD video, CES, and the blogging tool he has been working on, Blogsmith. Weblogs INC was recently purchased by AOL. Jason and Chris also discussed online adverting and affiliate programs.
Gnomedex also came up as Jason really enjoyed the conversations and people at the conference. Jason said that everyone there are the actual people that “build stuff.” He meant, that its not the CEO’s but the actual people at all the big players that are coming up with the new innovations. Chris said that they’re having it in Seattle again on June 30-July 2. Chris has been very busy working with the host location to make sure that the internet access isn’t a problem this time around.
Robert Scoble
Chris has been showing off his Cingular 2125 so Robert had to get one too. Robert is really enjoying it. According to Robert, the reception is great.

Tonight’s Calls
- Arthur from Brooklyn, NY called to ask when Gnomedex would be coming to NY. Chris would like to do it there it’s too expensive to host a conference there. Arthur also asked about optimizing his system. Chris said that first and foremost stay away from anything that has Norton or Symantec on the box. All their products have declined in quality and have become very bloated. Chris also said all these optimizing programs made by everyone just use additional memory and are not needed in WindowsXP. So just save your cash! But there is one exception to this rule and that is Diskeeper. It really does help to defragment your harddrive occasionally and Diskeeper does the best job. Chris also recommended another program, FastCache by AnalogX.
- Michael wanted to know how to set up a home server or whatever to stream music and video to his PSP. Chris said you’d need something that would have a web interface so you can use the web browser in the PSP. Jake said, If you already have WinTV card there is an optional software plugin available that can stream to other devices. Chris also recommended to check out BeyondMedia. Jake suggested Sage TV Media.
- Michael from Gainesville, FL wanted to know how he can schedule an automatic download of a file everytime he logs on to his Windows XP account. Chris suggested Leechget 2004. Jake said Leechget 2005 is not too good. Chris also suggested to check other download managers such as GetRight.
- Daniel called into ask Robert’s and Chris thoughts about John Dvorak recommending that Microsoft should purchase Opera. Chris and Robert were doubtful that would happen. Chris thought it might be more likely if Google bought them. Robert also added that the DoJ might not permit it.
Jeremy Cohn’s Segment
Our first story this evening was about the xBox, but not the 360! Three men were charged and arrested in Los Angeles for modding and selling xBox’s. They were basically modding them so that pirated games could easily be copied onto an xBox hard drive.
The second story was about the ongoing transit strike in New York City. Jeremy and Jim discussed how technology was very useful for many trying to get around during the strike. Websites such as Craigslist were very busy with New Yorker’s trying to find a ride from others around the city. Cars were only allowed in the downtown core if you had four passengers! Another great use of technology during the strike is to simple be able to work from home. Jeremy mentioned that typical today, is having a laptop and a Blackberry at home – you’re set! The integration with technology and the work world has no doubt made offices less useful!
Story three tonight:
This week, story number four was about the American and Indian government’s complaining about the potential security issues that could be caused by Google Earth. The two governments (along with others) think that Google Earth may have the ability to look at classified sites (military, etc).
Jeremy and Jim both wish you a very happy holiday! Remember that you can email Jeremy anytime during the week: jeremy.cohn@lockergnome.com. His co-host Jim Sanderson can be reached anytime at jims@dominionbusiness.ca. Remember, Jeremy and Jim will be on the air both days during the live broadcast from CES of the Chris Pirillo show on January 5th and 6th – be sure to tune in!
