Thursday 15 September 2005
The last time Webzine took place, a virtually unknown documentary filmmaker named Michael Moore presented the keynote. Five years later, Webzine is back with a renewed energy. On tonight’s show, we’ll talk with Eddie Codel, one of Webzine’s organizers about the event and why everyone should be in San Francisco on September 24 and 25.
Jacob Appelbaum went to Iraq for several months and blogged about his experiences. He documented the trip with a combination of video, text and photos to tell his story and offer advice to people interested in visiting the country. Following the Hurricane Katrina disaster, he made his way to Houston, Texas to speak with evacuees and went on to New Orleans where he’s helping with the recovery process and documenting the stories of locals who remain. Tonight, we’ll be talking with Jake on the show to get his perspective of the hurricane aftermath.
As always, we’ll be taking your calls live via 888.PIRILLO and Google Talk.

Tonight’s Calls
- Jake called in to create some controversy. He believes that if Google releases a web browser, then IE’s market share would drop at least by 50%. He feels that Internet Explorer has too many security problems and has failed to follow standards. Chris doesn’t disagree but has a feeling Google will use Firefox if they do release one and doesn’t think that Firefox is a viable replacement because of “UI issues.”
- Mike (mab631) wanted to know which feature Chris is looking forward to most in Windows Vista. Chris believes the UI standards and vector graphics will be the best feature as it will provide a clean, consistent, and elegant interface.
- Tedd called in from Pascagoula, Miss. He survived hurricane Katrina and only had minor flooding damage to his apartment. Tedd wanted to know how to get water out of his computer. Chris suggested vacuuming it out and allowing it to dry completely before plugging it in and using it. Distilled water can be used to flush out the sediment but again its very important to allow it to completely dry.
- David wanted to discuss Handheld computers. He heard Chris mention before that he hated the Palm devices and wanted to know why. Chris feels the Palm OS is very dated and hasn’t kept up with the times. More specifically David was wondering if PocketPC had FTP clients and is able to be more network aware. Chris suggested he check out RukSun Software for all kinds of networking clients. As far as which PPC to get, take a serious look at HP’s models. Chris suggested that this is probably not the best time to purchase a PPC because the Windows Mobile version 5 will soon be released and it introduces many improvements.
- David also asked whats the deal with BitTorrent and how does it compare with LimeWire. Chris explained that with bittorrent the client downloads bits of the files from multiple people at once time so things come down to faster. Chris recommends the Azureus Bittorrent client.
- David also wanted to know about anti-virus software and Symantec. Chris cannot stress enough to stay away from every product with Symantec in the name. Chris recommended Etrust. Many in the chatroom suggest NOD32.
- Jason from GeekStreak called in to tell us about the revolution controllers but then his mom hijacked the phone to pester Chris into setting a date for the Wedding with Ponzi. Right after this call Jason’s mom called David Letterman to bug him to marry the mother of his child already.
