Mitch Ratcliffe recently formalized an idea that’s been floating around the blogosphere for some time now - the concept of Paramedia. As defined by Mitch, paramedia networks of people with access to media publishing tools and training that align through self-organizing or by explicit planning to promote and support the discussion of an idea, agenda or problem.
Mitch more clearly sums this up with three examples of paramedia:
Paramedia is a form of media that applies the training that have been largely restricted to journalists, artists and storytellers by limited access to the tools and channels for making and distributing messages;
Paramedia operate beside, between, above and below the traditional practitioners of media and the paramedia channels enjoy an increasingly similar access to audiences through distribution channels.
Paramedia can be dysfunctional, the assumption by established media is that paramedia is essentially flawed by a lack of professionalism. Paramedia people, likewise, believe the media they intend to obsolete is dysfunctional.
You can read the full analysis in The Era of Paramedia or listen to his Evolution Media podcast.
In addition to taking your questions and comments about all things tech related, we will be speaking with Mitch about this concept of Paramedia and the future impact on both existing media and the future. And if you want to expand on the idea or challenge Mitch’s thinking, 888-PIRILLO will put you on the air.

Tonight’s Calls
- Eric Rice called in to speak with Mitch and relate his Dell story. People kept approaching Eric saying you should get a Dell LCD and Eric had to explain Jeff Jarvis’ experiences with Dell since they were not aware of it. Eric asked Mitch how you could relate things that go on in the blogasphere to “normal, rank and file” people that don’t pay attention to bloggers and the paramedia. Mitch feels everything just needs to be repeated and repeated until everyone learns of it.
