I seem to be an exact opposite to most people when it comes to weather. Instead of running to the nearest shelter, I run to my vehicle. I don’t drive away from them, instead I head directly for them. One of my most dear hobbies is chasing storms. What makes it interesting is that for some strange reason I seem to photograph mainly tornadic storms from my house. Thankfully none of them get too close, but I am still drawn to them none the less.

Now even though I love to photograph storms, one thing I do fear is lightning. If I had to go head to head on which is more unpredictable tornadoes or lightning… lightning wins the bet with me. Tornadoes you can keep an eye on most times to see what is happening with them. Lightning… well you only have a mili-second to even respond.

I have to admit, you are more braver than I, even though I am willing to chase winds that can reach up to 300 mph… lightning… is something I don’t feel safe enough to mess with. Most times I stay in the car :D

That’s often how the “addiction” to storm chasing starts… Hope you enjoy it. The next step is to reach (by car) the center of the thunderstorms to make wonderful photos ;-)

I love thunder and lightning, but unfortunately my dog and my twin 8 month yo girls do not. Bad timing for storms to hit the DC area where I live on the 4th of July – power goes out, thunder and lightning first, then fireworks next.

Ever try to comfort a dog and infant girls with no power, 80 degree indoor temperatures, and fireworks ablazing? ;)

I live in the Springs and the lightning storms are not something you want to take chances with. One person died last night after being hit and another person was injured. It happens way too often here. It seems that every year a hiker on Pikes Peak is killed by lightning. Sadly, it’s almost a given. People just don’t realize how dangerous Colorado storms can be.

I know that if I’m outside hiking and I see anything close to a thunderstorm on the horizon, I’m done for the day. Not worth the risk.

Colorado has the best lightening shows anywhere – I miss it living on the East coast. The best views are the overlook at Garden of the Gods, above the visitor’s center.

Wow – that’s a great picture! I’ve often thought of doing the same thing. We used to have great lightning storms in Michigan growing up, and we get some good ones here in Texas, too.
