The problem with Web 2.0 social networks are that they somehow assert by their mere existence that they do something that the web itself does not do. When you lament that there should be a killer social networking app, I have news for you. There IS, and it's called the web. If you have an FTP client, Windows notepad (or something like it), and a little bit of time to use some basic HTML tags, you can create web pages that link to the web pages of your friends, post photos, collect and present comments, and all sorts of neat stuff. The web is the best killer social networking app ever created and its a shame people have so forgotten that they are drawn to using social networking services that are redundantly built atop of it. It's like using Windows 3.1 over DOS and calling it an operating system. :P

The brilliance of Web 2.0 from a marketing perspective is all of these sites require username and email. Since we are being "social" we get everyone we'd normally send Christmas cards to to sign up. It is like a chain letter if you think about it. We are all in some big MLM sending invites to one another.

The solution? That's a good question. Maybe we focus less on getting stuff done on the web and go back to traditional stand alone software for important things. Web 3.0 can be a stand alone app that integrates your contact list <b>without</b> losing your 3 hours dedicated work on a spreadsheet <i>like what happens on so often when your browser crashes.</i>

By the way, you never accepted my Facebook invite Chris!

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I'm sick of what I call the "flashies and sparklies" of social networking, when all I really want is to get or share information. I'm looking for the steak, not the sizzle.

I recently opened up my website to anyone who wants a blog or a podcast feed, without the aforementioned "sparklies". I jokingly refer to it is "The Antisocial". Sure, I have a Youtube account, and a MySpace page, but I mainly use them to direct people to the content from my site.
Still very much a Mom and Pop thing, but it works how I'd like it to, without a lot of fuss.

Love your site, Chiris. Keep up the wonderful work!

Killer apps, web 2.0!

Am reminded of a 'time travel' sf story written 3-4 decades ago. At the end, when it is clear that recent European history is the story of the protagonist making enough money from his historical pre-knowledge to build a time machine so that he can go back in time to start investing in sure things so that he can make enough money... you get the picture... anyway his Boswell asks him, "You mean that's all, recent history has no other meaning?" and his reply is, "When did it ever mean anything more?"

There's more to life than the web, mate. Keep fishing, and don't let the sharks get you down. Bad expression btw, the human2shark massacre ratio is rather biased in favour of humans, by about a million to one.

Jump the shark, eh? That's funny, just this morning I spotted the "Jump the Shark" book on my shelf. I picked it up from a bargain bin while I was traveling a couple of years ago.

I noticed it this morning and pondered, "when did jumping the shark jump the shark?" And here we are, web-to-point-oh-ing it up. Rawk.

So, invent the Web 2.0 killer yourself then. Get the funding for your invention and it will end up just like all the rest. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I'm glad you have finally stepped up and stated this fact which has been bundled up deep inside of us original information based users for some time now.

I cringe when I hear the term "social networking". In fact, I may cut off my fingers for typing those words.

I've recently been viewing your network and have found your different web sites to be highly rewarding. Ever think about re-vamping the structure of your web platform / web sites into a more cohesive network ?

I think you can greatly capitalize by integrating everything to a more viable domain which creates increased revenue from the connectivity being exchange. If web 2.0 can make an insane amount of money from all of this then it shouldn't be too difficult for the "originals" to re-invent the mold.

I'll see you around,

Just saw the WEB 2.0 video. You are heartless. Those poor people, just trying to sell a product (even if it does not exist), and you put them through all that. Simply hilarious.

On the other hand, we used to think of a product as a tangible object. Today a product can be as intangible as a bunch of ones and zeros combined to make up a computer program (A.K.A. intellectual property), so why not sell a 'concept' as if it were a product?

I think this begs the question "How far is too far"? Are we there yet?
