The Truth about Wikipedia Credit

Imagine my surprise when a few friends of mine from the Netherlands emailed to let me know that I was featured in a video about Wikipedia! There was a link in the beginning of their video to a video I had done about Wikipedia, discussing how we can use them as a source to find out truth and information. I’ve often talked about Wikipedia in the past, listing it as a resource that should always be fact-checked. However, it’s the future of information distribution. I feel it falls short in some areas, yes. However, it’s strength far outweighs their weaknesses.
So I went on a search, and came across the video in question on YouTube. The first thing you hear and see after their logo flashes through is the video that we recorded! What the producers decided to do is clip about the bottom half, which eliminates chat and my sponsor logos. Most concerning to me, is they also eliminated credit. We produced this video… and did not get credit. The Truth According to Wikipedia is an amazingly well-produced video.
While I think it’s great that they used and edited my work, I’m very upset that they did not give me credit. It’s quite well done, so on the one hand I’m proud to have been a part of what they’ve come up with. But of course… the other hand is my disappointment in not being asked to use my content, or even so much as giving me credit for my original work. As traditional journalists, they should have given credit where credit is due.
I’m not asking that they take the video down, since it was so well done. But I do think I should get proper credit. If you’re going to use something that another person has produced… give them credit for the work. Ask them if it’s ok to use! Most of the time, I will give you permission, and ask for a copy of what you put together. Is it really the truth, and the right way of doing things by leaving out where you got the information you used?

I don’t want to watch that video solely because of Chris not getting credit in the video itself. That is unprofessional and just plain rude.

I agree about Wikipedia being the future of information distribution. I absolutely love the site, and very rarely ever find a mistake in what someone has written. Also, a shame you didn’t get credit on that great video. That needs to change.

I know it’s not NEARLY the credit you deserve, but I noticed a lot of people commenting on the video on YouTube saying “Give Chris his credit!” and such, but you do have a small small credit. If you expand the information about the video, about half way down, at the very end of a long list of people in the video, it says Opening is a video by Chris Pirillo.
I don’t know if the owners of the video edited that after all the comments or not. Just thought I’d comment and let you know.

I took the time to watch this video when it was first put on YouTube and thought it was interesting that you didn’t have a credit in the video but I saw your name in the description and thought that was fine. Now that I think about it again I think they probably should have done something different.
Keep in mind there was another YouTube user in that video used without credit given.

I really don’t think that what Wikipedia did is right.
If Chris(You) made the original video, YOU should get the credit.
If that happened to me, i would be really pissed off.

Of course, your video should have been left intact and it is a misrepresentation not to do so. The buried credit Andrew mentions above is not good enough.
As to Wikipedia, I could no longer live without it. The breadth of information is astonishing. On only one or two occasions have they failed to have a piece on even obscure items I’m searching for.
On the other hand, the depth of information in many items is too shallow to be useful, others are just plain wrong and many are shaded to show people and/or corporations in a better light than they deserve without providing opposing information.
But it is still the best starting place on the web. Ever heard of the “Wend people”? Me neither. But there was a page in Wikipedia that gave a good overview and all kinds of clues to follow up on in other ways.
Back to the video: it is so easy to provide credit in videos – voice over, lower thirds, a quick text slide with information – that there is no excuse for burying it. We are all long accustomed now to taking in a variety of information at once. When credit is missing, credibility is in question.

I added something to a Wikipedia! article referenceing an event that I was a witness to and Wikipedia! deleted the information. I guess they want things presented the way they want even if it leaves out events or in Chris’s case.. credit for his work.

I agree with you Chris. It was you that produced the content, and even if they just put a label in the video that said something like Chris Pirillo, or Live.Pirillo.com that probably would have been enough. One more thing when I get upset I don’t scratch myself like Wicket does.

Hi Chris,
Sorry to hear (and see).
The company who put this together seems to identify themselves as “VPROinternational”. I suspect that they thought they could gain some sort of advantage by stealing your work instead of using it properly.
Instead, all that VPROinternational has received out of this devious little endeavor is bad publicity. (First you blogged about them…. then I named their company in this comment so that the world would know just who they are!)
Life is like that, isn’t it? Whenever people cut corners they always seem to think that they are getting ahead…. but it always comes back to bite them.
By the way, is that video property of Chris Pirillo or is it property of Ustream?
Thanks for sharing,
James Gia
P.S. You may want to change the links in your blog so that they open up in a new window. :O)

Yes, they have added Chris’ name in the video description, but this seems like an afterthought. People aren’t going to read the long list to see who made the opening video. They should have referenced him by flashing his name briefly just like they did for the other people. Chris is being denied lots of new viewers because of this.

i feel that you should have gotten credit for your video.thats completely ridiculous that you did not! so they use your video and everything and have the nerve to not give you credit. i would be pissed. on the other hand being on there is almost credit in itself. just the thought that someone would have put you on there is a great compliment.
It is true that people today are using things without giving the original person credit for their ideas. it’s sad that this is what america is coming to
i have watched the video and i agree that you should have been mentioned..thats the least they could have done. This is ridiculous! ugghhh

i think also that Chris should get Credit for it, why the darn did they put in Chris if they weren’t planing to be fair, they might as well have removed chris video, that is almost like to invite your friends to help you move or remake a room only to shout at them : All done, now beat it.
where are their manners, didn’t they have mothers who learned they what is right and what is wrong. they got nerves

Don’t you get in trouble with your sponsors if people do that? They are covering your sponsors logos! That, and they are covering up chat. Sometimes I watch you videos just to read the chat, I have seen a lot of funny stuff in there.

i usually dont trust or try to stay away from wiki, like you said to the extent of facts. however, for the sake of time i do use it for quick info on a subject. although the info is just as good there as it is here, which could be way off, credits should be given, so we know if it comes from a loyal source. then again, thats the motive of this knew age info ditribution website.

Agreed, crediting is so important. Has anyone e-mailed VPRO to see why they decided to credit the way they did? Crediting at the end of films is better than no credit at all. But I am sorry they were only able to excerpt your video and in the English version could not credit in the image.
One thing is that the original was broadcast with Dutch credits (in the image) and so the Youtube video may not be identical to the director’s original.
I think the film brings up a lot of interesting thoughts and it would be great to talk about those, too. Reasoning about what truth is/can be in the Age of Wikipedia. Good brain exercise, that.

Strangely enough, I actually became aware of you by reading the “Credit Chris!” comments on that documentary’s YouTube page. Those comments made me wonder who the hell you were, so I searched your name. Ever since then (24 hours ago), I’ve been hooked on your videos!
