The Proximitron

“In today's newsletter, you mentioned a popup / ad blocker called Pow.
Seems interesting, but I found an app a while back that I think is
really just the best I have ever seen. I use Windows on my desktop
machine, but in my heart I am a UNIX geek. I have been looking for
something that can do ad / popup blocking on my Windows box for a long
time, and one day I found The Proximitron. Not only is it (essentially)
free, but it can block anything & everything. AND, its entirely based
on Perl style regular expressions, so adding your own exceptionally
powerful filters can be done. I even have mine set up to block popups
that don't come from my clicking the mouse (meaning, if I didn't click
it, it doesn't popup). I think your readers might be interested. Its
available here. [Matt Cowger]

I'm using “Zonealarm Pro” version 3………it has a Popup killer, Ad-Blocker and Cookie blocker built in… “works great” I finally feel good about purchasing it. It's well worth the price now. And I'm very cheap…LOL. These are only a few things it can do….among being a firewall. That “Proximitron” looks like another resource hog to me ! Too much configuring and fussing around.
Maybe …I should start a “Blog” of my own this is very Liberating…..Hee Hee !

The Proximitron is so hard to configure, I dropped in favor of two much simpler programs: Panicware's Pop-Up Stopper and AdShield (banner-blocker). It works well and provides total control, but you really have to spend the time to train it properly. I wouldn't recommend it to the average user.

Ad blocker, pop-up stopper, cookie blocker, the works. Does it take some configuring? Yes. But if you are serious about avoiding ads, pop-ups and the like, get NIS.

I have no time or patience to configure a pop up stopper. Panicware's Pop-Up Stopper (usually set on agressive) is free and kills every pop up unless I hold the CTRL key down while I click the link. It's a great relief to get rid of the pop-ups.

I love the Proxomitron – I use it all the time. Great for blocking adverts, popups and annoying JScripts. Yes, it's hard to use, but there's almost nothing like it out there with this level of customisability.
