The Next Monopoly
We were watching TV the other day when a news segment mentioned that there's a new Monopoly board in the works – as if the Star Wars Monopoly wasn't enough? Hasbro is at the drawing board with another Monopoly game. This time, it's the 'Here & Now' Edition (which will be the 'There & Then' Edition in less than a year). You can cast your vote to shape the future of Monopoly, all my hotel-owning friends. No need to roll doubles or land on Park Place – take a Chance and reach into your Community Chest to pull out a few of your favorite U.S. locations. They've already selected the cities, so don't get your hopes up Des Moines! You can vote through May 12th. There's only been ~100k voters to this point, though – so your chances for Monopoly choices are high. I wonder which landmarks will be listed as Baltic and Mediterranean? Do not pass Go – do not collect $200.

Great – yet another edition of Monopoly. Its not like EVERY EDITION plays the exact same way.
Scary is that we know this game will sell. And sell well. But will anyone play it? And if they do, its probably because they don't know any better.
If only Hasbro (who makes Monopoly) would buy out one of the better boardgame companies (Days of Wonder, Mayfair, Rio Grande Games etc) and release some quality. Sure Hasbro and Avalon Hill (a division of Hasbro) have done better than usual in the last couple of years (Heroscape and Nexus Ops are both worth a look), but against great games like Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne and El Grande they just don't stack up…
