The Myth of MythTV

Commenting on The Myth of MythTV, Lockergnomie Dan Gheorghiu writes:

I read your post about MythTV and PVR Drivers. Most of the popular new PVR cards sold for Windows XP MC are based on Connexant's “Blackbird” design, which hasn't had drivers for Linux or Myth.
We have been working on these drivers and released an alpha version at Plutohome.com. Pluto even has a self-booting kick-start CD that will automatically install & configure everything for you, including a ready-to-go Myth system. It's the fastest and easiest way to get a MythTV PVR up and running, and also installs Xine, Asterisk and our own software to give you the most advanced media & entertainment, home automation, security, telecom & computing system, controllable with your Symbian Bluetooth mobile phone, as well as PDA's and Webpads.
We're working hard to harden the drivers as quickly as possible and would like as much feedback as possible. These 2nd generation “Blackbird” cards are lower in price and offer better picture quality than the current models supported in IVTV, so be sure to check them out. Visit plutohome.com, click 'support', 'support site', and choose “CX88 Blackbird Drivers” from the projects menu.

I've heard great things about MythTV, provided you can get the sucker set up. I'll stick with MCE for the time being.

GoToAssist lets you provide support to your friends or customers even when they aren't at home. By using the unattended support feature, you can fix their software issues, install their updates, or nearly anything else you would normally do on-site.

Thwell.

I'm a big fan of my MythTV box… I wouldn't recommend it to anyone but the geekiest and most stubborn people, though; especially if they want to have a working remote control through 'lircd' which is the pickiest piece of software ever….
MythTV I found to be very difficult to install under Redhat using RPMs, but oddly I found it relatively easy to install on a Gentoo system if you don't count the relative pain of installing a Gentoo box….
One of my biggest reasons for not going with the MCE is that with MythTV, I know that I don't have to worry about DRM encoded files. I can encode a show I want to keep as a tiny little XVID file without a problem… This isn't an informed opinion, but extrapolation from how MS has worked with WMP in the past, etc…

All posts with MythTV should come with a second section about satellite TV options, namely the Hauppauge WinTV Nexus-S card controlled by the awesome open-source program, Video Disk Recorder.

How can these systems view and record digital cable channels?

I have always considered mythtv hard to install or setup, but it was worth installing it (i use suse linux). Recently i tried to install it under ubuntu and it was really painless to install, so i guess it depend on which distribution you are using. Under ubuntu, mythtv is really easy to install.
i’m still using suse linux (i don’t need to change anything in my server), but as i said it is nothig difficult under ubuntu 8.10.
