The Mess Called MSN Messenger
1. Why can't I remove any of the tabs? I can understand why you think I'd want them all there, but… you're not me. This isn't your experience, this is *MY* experience. You really, really want me to use this and recommend it to everybody? I guess this truly is MSN's Messenger – although you shouldn't make me feel that way.
2. I'm not on the dating scene – why do I need to see the Heart tab?! If you want to serve up something relevant, and you're *NOT* going to let me remove the darn thing, at least refer to my Passport profile that I set up – saying that I'm already in a long-term relationship. If your service had any sense, it'd give me offers for flowers for Algernon Ponzi. But it's not smart – it's just a bunch of loose pieces, hastily joined. A real Passport-enabled messenger would be aware of my Passport prefs. Am I missing something (other than a great IM experience)?
3. Under the “Billing Information” menu, I see nothing about billing information. Instead, I see upsells to overload my crappy MSN Messenger 7.0 beta with more crap. Why not label it “More Crap,” perhaps? Not to say that AOL's instant messenger is any better, but… no wonder third-party instant messaging clients are all the rage. I'm in charge of my IM, not you. Is this logic becoming a little more clear? Keep reading.
4. I don't use Internet Explorer, nor is it registered as the default browser on my system (which I set with the tool that Microsoft integrates within the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel applet). Of course, your client has always been too dumb to figure that out. Good to see that some bugs features never go away.
5. I'm already a paid MSN subscriber – why am I seeing banner ads in my Messaging client? Wow, what an incentive *NOT* to upgrade again. I don't want to see banner advertisements in my IM windows. And “thanks” for not remembering my window position. I move the ad off-screen, but as soon as I restart the IM client, you reposition the window for me. I'm a paying member, folks – I paid you money. I'm not complaining because I want this service for free.
6. Where's the “Blog It” button? Ah yes, it's completely buried. I have to first click on my name at the top of the tool, then 'Add to My Personal Space.' Add what – my name? Why? You've got the branding thing down-pat, but… you're doing it incorrectly. If you're gonna shove your vision down my throat, at least cherry-coat it with something other than NyQuil?
7. Where's the news aggregator? Or, at least, a tab that helps me track my friends on, say… MSN Spaces? That would actually be something *gasp* useful! Instead, I get to see generic alerts from your partners. “Oooooh… Aaaaah…” Hear that? That's the sound of your audience using something that they (themselves) control.
8. Why does MSN Messenger launch an external browser when I want to listen to anything? Uh, where's the seamless experience I should be experiencing here? Same holds true for the Games tab. Keep me *OUT* of the browser whenever possible, please?
9. Why do I get a security warning when I attempt to download a display picture from the 'Happy Face' tab? Shouldn't it just add it to my library since you're already a “trusted” source? I tried to express myself and my true feelings about this new version, but there was no 'middle finger' to be found.
10. How about trying to get along with the other IMs out there? Try, for me? For us? For the sake of the System Tray?! Until you do, I'm sticking with the only chioce – a unified messenger. IM shouldn't be about the client – it should be about the messages. And if I need to clarify any of these points, feel free to add me to your Contact list. I'm Zl0ckergn0me@Zhotmail.Zcom.
FWIW, I only complain about the products I want to use. Please, make MSN Messenger better. Suggestion? Visit Mess.be before the next beta cycle begins. My community tells me that I suck all the time… but I'm also one guy with fewer resources on hand!

You *CAN* remove the tabs BTW. Its in the privacy section of the options I bealieve. I dont have them showing anyway, hough that might be caused by their being disabled (in the porivacy section) before I upgraded if the option has been removed.

You can remove the tabs from the side. Tools -> Options -> Privacy and check “This is a shared computer so don't display my tabs”. So that gets rid of points 1 and 2.
Secondly you can get rid of the banner using MsgPlus – http://www.msgplus.net – which is a really cool add on to the standard MSN Messenger which some nice features.
Lastly I MSN chat links open up just fine as per my Firefox “open in new tab” setting. So something is up with your configuration. Works like that on my mates PCs too.

Well he has many points. I didnt pay for msn messenger but I really think they should instead of try and add more to the features they already have they should fucken make new features such as tab removal and auto messages. YEah sure msgplus is great but we shouldnt have to download stuff to make msn better. I mean. We shouldnt have to have the advertisments either, espseially the ones that pay for the fucken msn. I will be giving more info about my opinion on my space so go to my space and see more stuff. It should be up by December 10th. Ill also be adding more about this often! So go to my space!!!!

Msgplus may be good but its riddled with spyware and adware.
MSN Messenger is no real change over 6.2
Funny how bored u can get of 10 odd winks or same ol smileys then have to pay for new ones…no thanks.
All i see in this new version is greed.
Can anyone honestly convince me this is better than 6.2?
Chris your very right and the fact im not a paying customer on msn makes my comments not worthy.
Third party chat/im clients do better because they listen to you…not their wallets.

I totally agree with you Chris.
I myself am not a paying customer so I don't need to have the advertisments gone. But for a paying customer like yourself, the whole point is for you to pay them instead of the advertisments.
Simply, Microsoft have gotten greedy.
I agree with the other guy, there wasn't much of a change between 6.2 and 7 apart from:
MsgPlus is a great addon and I personally use it, but in my opinion I shouldn't have to. Apart from a few things that MsgPlus does, I am happy with all of the features.
Microsoft knows about MSGPlus and know that people download it, so why not just intergrate all of it themselves? Why not make it easier for the users that are using MSN Messenger? I have recommened to a couple of my friends to use MSN Messenger saying its great, but if they want all the features I have, then I tell them that they have to download other programs aswell.
Just by this comment, they have completely changed their minds about using MSN Messenger, purely because they have to download another program.
It's just plain stupid.
And there is one more thing, like yourself Chris, that really pisses me off:
The use of Internet Explorer even when my default browser is set to Mozilla Firefox.
I have sent in queries to MSN Messenger myself, telling them that even though I have a different browser, they still stick with IE.
At the moment, the only things that are keeping me from not using MSN Messenger are:
That alot of my friends use it
That I make applications regarding the Messenger services. EG. Chatterbots
And that I like to investigate the Messenger protocol and figure out what it all means (Kind of like a puzzle)
Otherwise, I would have changed from MSN Messenger a long, long time ago.

I agree with you on most points, specially with points 4, 5 and 8.
There should be an option for turning the “A new version of MSN Messenger is available” alert off permanently. I would still use v6.1 but this message popped-up every time i signed in and I got bored of it.
Btw, the only thing that is keeping me from switching to Yahoo or AIM is that most ppl here use MSN. Every new version needs more resources just because of some stuff I don't ever use such as winks.
Plus, sometimes I can't even sign in.
I hope the team developing MSN Messenger will read this and *try* to do something about it, as they don't seem to care even a bit about users.
Bny.

I completely agree with point 2
>> at least refer to my Passport >> profile that I set up
Not only profile, you can refer to the mails I get, go through the chat sessions and find out more about me. If gmail can show relevant ads, based on emails I read, why not to accept relevant tabs in my messenger?

I'm sorry, but what makes you think you've paid for messenger? No one has (outside the normal Microsoft tarrif that comes with paying for any MS os..)
Just because you pay for internet access to MS, doesn't mean you've paid for messenger and more than any of the rest of us. Get a clue.
Incidently, I prefer browser windows to open in *gasp* WINDOWS. tabs just a different form of clutter and harder to navigate. All tabs do is hide the fact that you are too stupid to close a few windows when you are done with them, or do you really think you can actually do 100 things at once???

msn is nice but getting a bit too complicated. I don't think having add is great, there is already add everywhere on the net and having some blinking panel on my screen just make me sick. I use messenger a lot but I am thinking of looking for an alternative, I only need to send messages, not to make my shopping or a search on the net.
Msn today bar is useless as well, it just increase the confusion to the already crowded interface.

Actually on the latest beta 7 you cant remove the tabs. And its like the mobile phone of IM clients, pay for ringtones, pay for wallpaper , pay for icons, yada yada, its pure steaming donkeyshite.
Stick to 6.2 for now. Its the WMP of IM clients, bubbleboy themed.
6.2 works, use it. As for GAIM, well its pure GTK shite. Trillian, fagoty tripe. Somebody write a plan and simple client for all protocols using XUL or XAML so its cross platform, and java, include File transfer, cams, pics, and make everything customisable so everybody is a winner. We need the Mozilla Firefox of IM clients, so why not use XUL as the UI markup.

Actually, you can remove the tabs in MSN Messenger 7.0 Beta. You just have to open up regedit.exe and change the value from 0 to 1 in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger\DisableTabs
have fun.

Messenger can't open some windows in browsers that aren't IE as it can only send the user's address and password through IE…So no-matter if you have changeds the default browser or not, the windows cannot be opened in any other browser except IE.

As I run IE with all the cookie queries turned on, and as locked down as possible (using Firefox for “regular” websurfing) it became clear that MSN are not serving the ads in MSN7 themselves – the advert box is an IE window which connects to the advertisers website to grab the ad.
So basically, anyone who pays MSN enough to get into the ad list can push content from their server to your PC. Now lets assume one of those advertisers gets targetted by a hacker (gotta be easier than attacking MSN itself) – now your MSN advert box could be downloading spyware to your PC. If MSN were serving the ads I'd be happier using a non-standard protocol I'd be happier. But while they insist on using the IE rendering engine, I'll be looking elsewhere for my IM needs.
Not Good.

Did you know that there are other programs that can replace msn messenger ?
But, even better, the program I'm refering to can also replace IRC, AIM, ICQ, Yahoo.
That is, when you log, you see ALL your chat connections on ALL the your chat server at a time WITHOUT using all the different programs.
Is that good or is that good ?
Ok, I will tell you what it is.
The program is named “Trillian”.
A free version is availlable at http://www.ceruleanstudios.com
It is called Trillian basic and it is a fully functional version with no limited amount of days.
You don't like Msn Messenger ?
Trillian is your answer.
Some of you friends use IRC, AIM, ICQ, Yahoo and messenger ?
Trillian is your answer.
Am I a representant of Trillian ? … non … I'm just so impressed with the program that I want to share my experience.
Try it! You'll see what I meen.

um… yeah… i think chris knows enough that he knows about the tab removal.
he means, why not be able to display ONLY THE TABS YOU WANT. (as with yahoo)
either all of them, or none of them… how convienient.
as foe msn having to send passwords and addresses thruogh ie… um, doesn't msn already knows those?

how about having to be forced to have your status as 'online' to send or receive…
that's privacy for you.
or that regardless of your status being 'offline'… you are Still shown as having logged on. how is that to be considered offline?
why bother choosing a certain display pic, when everytime one logs on… there is a random one put up?
if firefox is default… Everything should open It.
no exceptions.
trillian is lovely… except for the lack of video. (granted with the paid version, one can through yahoo, but…)
i wait for the day when OSX gets put out as software only.
(yes, steve Swears it'll never happen… oh please. )

Hey, I use Windows Live Messenger… I know it may not be great to begin with but after you use the mess.be patch (probably a violation of M$’s EULA, but i’m in Australia so i don’t really care…), its half decent because you can get rid of all the ads. Good for taking off that nudge time delay too.
Im also a user of msgpluslive.net… Nice Features…
He’s got a point with the firefox thing… they need to make WL Spaces button OPEN THE DEFAULT BROWSER!
