The error code is 2739
I had been trying to install later beta Skype clients, but to no end. I kept seeing this error message:
Skype: The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2739.
But when that error dialog popped up again with a final build (2.6 was released yesterday), I went Googling for it. Lo and behold, the answer was there – on Adobe’s site, not Skype’s (that I could tell). Their solution worked, although they were slightly incorrect by stating that the workaround would involve editing the Windows registry.
No, all you have to do is re-register the jscript.dll file. Don’t you love DLLs? The more things change, the more they stay the same. Here’s what I did:
- Hit Windows+R to bring up the Run dialog
- Keyed in “regsvr32 jscript.dll” (without quotes) and hit Enter
- Clicked OK on the resulting success dialog
- Installed Skype without a hitch
You may need to authenticate if you’re one of the devoted UAC faithful – and you’ll definitely need administrator privileges. To my knowledge, Mac users only have a single Skype binary to deal with?

For Vista users:
Registering the above might bring up an error with code 0×80004005. To fix:
1) Run cmd.exe with Administrator privilege (Start -> type “cmd”, then right-click on the cmd.exe and select “Run as Administrator, then click Continue on the elevation consent dialog). This will open a command prompt in C:\Windows\System32 (or wherever your system directory is).
2) Type regsvr32 jscript.dll – a popup will say successs.
3) Type regsvr32 vbscript.dll – a popup will say successs.
