The Dyson Vaccuum

We're moving to a place with carpets, so… we're going to need a vaccuum. I keep seeing this Dyson dude on the tube, telling me that my current vaccuum isn't a Dyson. I don't even know what kind of model we've got, but it doesn't work well. Do I do the Dyson thing and be all trendy? Is this guy full of nothing but hot, recycled air? Should I get the low reach or the animal upright? Its yellow shell is a little off-putting, but not if this sucker really doesn't suck at sucking. When vaccuums lose suction, you replace the bag. When a Dyson loses suction, it's gotta be broken.

GoToAssist lets you provide support to your friends or customers even when they aren't at home. By using the unattended support feature, you can fix their software issues, install their updates, or nearly anything else you would normally do on-site.

I bought one about a month ago… and dang. Hoover ain't got nothin on it. Not that i'm all geeky about my vacuum cleaner, but it works really well. I have two chocolate labs, and they shed like crazy in the fall. normally it's a pain to keep to keep, what little carpet i do have, clean. I recommend it

I've had a Dyson machine for nearly a year now (DC11 model) and it's simply superb – When I first got it, I did a test, I vacuumed my house with my old machine, then immediately did the same with the Dyson – and it filled the bin – that's after the carpets were allegedly “cleaned” by my old machine!
As you've got pets, I'd recommend going for a model with the “turbobrush” as it'll be much better for getting the hairs up, and the brush is easy to dismantle and clean out should it get clogged.
Tom (www.a-rush.co.uk)

The first time we bought one (a DC01) back in England it filled the dust container in just 2 rooms! You'll wonder what your old vacuum did – I'm sure all its predecessor did was redistribute the dirt.
When we moved to here in the US in 2002 we were lucky enough to trackdown the distributor's number on the web (They weren't yet sold stores).
Don't hoover the floor, Dyson it – you'll never regret it.

Im stuck with “Beam”.. Its nto really like an electric vaccuum, its more of a big tube plugging into the wall vaccuum.. Its weird.. Works great though..

Our Dyson Animal has been one of the best investments I've made. I've been using one for over a year and it's amazing how much dirt, dust and hair that it continually sucks up week to week. It's absolutely amazing and worth every penny.

My mother's had one for two or three years. Every visit she takes ten minutes to tell me how good it is. I've never heard a bad word about them.

NO, No, No!!!!! My wife works at a sewing machine and vacuum store. They all say that Dyson is a piece of crap! It also costs more to fix than replace.

I love my Dyson. I got it for my birthday. It is the best thing for cleaning!

Yes it's a lot of marketing hot air. There are plenty of good vacuum cleaners on the market. The physics of suction on the business end haven't changed. What is different is the dust collection chamber. What a pain and a mess to empty the Dyson. Yes there are no replaceable bags to buy but is this really an advantage? The visibility of the dust collection chamber is what makes people think itÂ’s working better. In the case of the individual who re-vacuumed the house immediately with the Dyson and was amazed: the same thing would have happened with any of the currently top rated vacuum cleaners. Many rate the Miele unites the best. Check out consumerreports.org instead of listening to all these anecdotal comments to you posting.

Had a Dirt Devil, and got an Orek for present. We inherited a Dyson and DANG! If there was EVER a vac to be geeky about – it's a Dyson.
Yes, we vacuumed with the DD and then the Orek. The Orek picked up stuff the DD didn't (no surprise there). The Dyson picked up stuff I swear was in the carpet from 1975!
You must possess a Dyson.

My wife just got a Dyson as an early Christmas present. That thing is amazing! You really do wonder if your old vacuum was picking anything up when you see all the stuff that collects in the chamber the first time you run it. Emptying it is a breeze, there are no bags to buy, and there is one lifetime filter that just needs to be washed every six months. The attachments are great (she got the Animal) and everything fits together in a way that makes the geek in me happy.

Consumer Reports just rated vacuum cleaners. Although you may not like to read anything that isn't online, it would be worth getting the issue ( I think it's December 2004) and read it before you buy anything. Consumer Reports accepts no advertising, so you know that their ratings are honest.
I've been a subscriber since 1962, and their recommendations have saved me tons of time & money over the years.

Dyson is definitely a great marketing campaign. I wonder if we were talking about stereos then how many people would sing the praises of Bose (which is regarded as crap at it's worst, way overpriced for low-end quality at it's best). It's amazing how public opinion can be formed for them by slick advertising.
I think most people using vacuums have something really old and/or very cheap. They get “sucked” into the Dyson ad and go out and buy it and then are amazed by the results. Had they bought any good quality unit, they would have seen the same results.
Personally, I have a Hoover Windtunnel that is a couple of years old. It was their top or near top of the line at the time. I have 2 large dogs that shed year round and it does a great job. The vacuum has a bunch of attachments and HEPA filtration and cost $300. You won't find that deal with Dyson. I've also heard what a mess you get when dealing with bagless units. I was interested when I first heard about them but research showed it was nothing special.
My local vacuum shop that sells a handful of brands recommended Miehle (sp?) to me when it came to a point of replacing my Hoover.

Here's another link commenting on Good Housekeeping's vacuum cleaner tests.

so why does chris delete people's entries? There was a good housekeeping link here the other day and that message is gone now.
that's inconsiderate.

Ever fantasize what it would be like to clean your carpets and floors with some sort of a super-sucking, megawatted, turbo-charged, filth hating, dirt eating, lint-kicking monsterized vacuum cleaner? Yeah…and I can say “Hemi. I have to admit I have. It’s not a very pretty sight and it can happen without warning. After about the fifth or sixth run-in with a lintball that just won’t let go, I know I’m starting to get into the “Danger Zone. No mas!
“The Hoover Savvy at $279.99 blew away the competition”. This is the article that got the ball rolling for me. It led me to Good Housekeeping's report on todayÂ’s “best of the bestÂâ€? upright vacuums. ThereÂ’s some really surprising “The Good, Bad and UglyÂâ€? contained therein. Their choice for #1 was the Hoover Savvy, so I decided to give it a test drive. Can it clean? Like wow and then some! IÂ’ve been so impressed, I just havenÂ’t bothered to give any of the others a try. Now, I know I should..and I guess I will. Because six months from now, I donÂ’t want keeping asking myself “Could the Dyson have done a better job?Ââ€?.
For what its worth to all and especially for the previous poster, I hope this helps.

It seems like I was going through a vacuum a year, because I was. We have golden retrievers and they're hair is a decent length. I would constantly break belts, have to dismantle the vacuum and unclog all of the hair. I've tried Hoover, Dirt Devil, Panasonic, bagless, bag, special gadget this, special gadget that. I just want one that can pick up the hair and last longer than a year. They Dyson did that. Other bagless vacuums do have terrible suction. You'll still probably get the best suction from a bag vacuum. I impressed with the Dyson because it does as it's advertised, not because I see dirt in a chamber.

It's the best vacuum ever! I took me a long time to convince my husband to spend that much on vacuum (can't see I disagree), but we have two small dogs and we are both still amazed at how much hair and dirt come out of the carpet every week. Friends of ours bought the Animal version, which is what we have, months ago and they love it as well.

Pick up the January issue of Consumer Reports. They rated the vacuums and the dyson came in at 13th place.
Is the Dyson Vacuum All ItÂ’s Cracked Up to Be?

It's my job to do all the vaccuming in the household and we just bought a new Dyson, thinking maybe it would help the carpets look a little nicer. The Dyson lost it's suction in the second week. Now we are left with no vaccume. We spent 379 dollars on the special pet hair Dyson and it broke almost as soon as we bought it! Besides It's impossible to actually SUCK anything, you can pull or push, but it is a scientific fact that you can never suck! The Dyson is awful, don't waste your money!

moo cow moo cow

I just bought ours last night and used it today and I am satisfied at this point. We have an australian shepherd mix that sheds year round and we have gone through 4 vacuums since we got her, I hope this is not the case with the Dyson as it is quite spendy.

one thing to remember about consumer reports is that they do not always rate the best product number one as they are looking at overall value

Well I'm also looking for a vacuum cleaner and was really thinking about the dyson. We bought a $300 hoover windtunnel 3 years ago and while it worked it was great. For the 1st year and a half it was great, we probably vacuumed twice a month then we got a dog. She's a mutt that's the size of a retreiver with 2-4″ long hair. Needless to say we started vacuuming every week. After about 6 months things started to crap out. The turbo handtool would get jammed with dog hair and would not work. The belts on the main brush went bad. I had to start taking the handtool apart at least once a month to clean out the hairs and get it moving again. In the past couple of months the Windtunnel has developed some kind of problem with the main brush. I replaced the belts but that hasn't fixed it. The windtunnel still has suction but what good is it if the handtool and brush don't work. So what to do. This blog seems like a lot of other sites I've seen. A very good following by Dyson owners and a few posts by those that think it's all marketing. So what to do – drop another $300 on a windtunnel that will be out of commision in 3 years or $500 on a dyson that who knows how long it will last. I know a few people with dysons and they love it but they've had them for less than a year.

Hoover vs Dyson

nuff said!

Well i just bought a dyson dc08 tw cylinder animal version today and oh blimey!!!
I decided to have a go at the zorb powder – the guy at the shop said he just sprinkles it on and it does the trick.
ALL i can say is i am absolutly shocked i mean really shocked at how much stuff this thing picks up!!!!!!! 2 and 3/4 full after the first go and i mean i live in a small flat!
I have 2 cats and to be honest i felt quite sick seeing all this stuff whisking around lots of hair and loads of white stuff (not the zorb powder, this is after i had done that bit). I thought the two turbine heads were great, i used the smaller with my hand, i ws really surprised by how good it is a doing the edges.
I know they are expensive and to be honest i was still bauking at the price after i had bought it £289.00 thinking i could have got a flight to sharm or something instead.
The other thing i bought mine from Comet in the uk, the online price is £50 cheaper but as in all cases unless you want it shipped to work and fancy taking a day off to get your spanking new piece of kit – you might as well just bite the bullet on that bit.
also comet gives you a 28 day money back guantee – if you don't like it give it back
oh yes to another comment about the head stopping on rugs etc – i thin you need to use the reduce suction button on the handle of the wand
Hope this helps

Hmm, the thing about Dyson is that they have a bit of a reliability problem – they came bottom in the UK's 'Which' consumer reports. But you can play that game to your advantage. Dysons that fail under guarantee seem to end up being reconditioned and sold for peanuts on Ebay. I picked up a £225 Dyson for £51 including delivery. If it fails I'll just throw it away and get another one… however I have friends who've been using them for years and years without any other complaint other than they get covered in dust if they empty the thing on a windy day.

Dyson makes a very powerful vacuum – too powerful. The major carpet manufacturers will VOID THE WARRANTY on carpet if you use a Dyson vacuum. I work in a floorcovering store and have had a (small) number of claims rejected for no other reason than because of the “improper cleaning method utilized by the Dyson Vacuum Cleaner.”

It's kinda like the vacuum cleaner version of a Ferrari; it's a status symbol, cute as hell, high tech, fun, noisy, expensive, a bit fragile; and neither the fastest vacuum available nor the best. But it still works really quite well, and it's a long, long way from being the worst. Bags are a nuisance and fiddly.
And if you're like me, you just *want* one.

My DC14 animal dyson is 2 months old. I feel I wasted a lot of money. It is flimsy plastic! No handle to vacuum with except the removable hose that is held on by minitiature plactic clips and wiggles around loosly. The hose kinks on the extension and the bottom seal keeps falling loose and then it has no suction and whenever I go from floors over the edge of a carpet there is this awful grinding noise. At first I couldn't beleive it wasnt broken but I now realize its just crap.

I work for sears and we carrie every model of this GREAT vac. We have NEVER had a return and out of the 2 million sold last year 2 have come back because the clutch has failed. Still out of 2 million and 2 coming back are great odds. We are very proud of our products and just about every one at my store has one. And we all love'em.

We just got a Dyson a few days ago and so far, I am very impressed! I tried the Hoover Self Propelled, which was rated #1 in Consumer reports. Not only did I have to exchange it twice in the first 2 weeks for one problem or another, but our third one died after about a year and never really worked well. The Dyson picks up a scary amount of stuff the first time you use it. And, being in a house full of animals, it still sucks up about a canister full of hair and dirt in every room- and I've been vacuuming at least once a day. I love it! Hated the price though. It better last a very long time for the amount we paid for it. It doesn't do too well on area rugs (at least on mine), and will make a really nasty sound if you don't switch it to the bare floor setting. It's very hard to push on our area rug and doesn't get up the hair as well as on the carpet. But, overall, I am very satisfied so far. And, if it stays working this well, I would reccomend it to anyone.

i've been a housekeeper for 26 years and dyson really does suck.
it sucks so hard i can barely pull it over thick carpet! it has no power drive it help it along, it is so heavy, loud and cumbersome!
the best vacuum is electrolux.

Ah the dyson debate….All vacuums work great out of the box. Hoover is number 1 in consumer reports because they don't test for loss of suction. So, the Hoover Savvy will pick up more dirt than any other upright because it has a super aggressive brush bar( that is why it has two brush bars). What they don't do is test how well it picks up after vacuuming 2-3 rooms. The more dirt you put in a filter or bag the less suction the machine will have. Plus having such an aggressive brush bar will damage your carpet faster. Dyson relies on it suction to pick up dirt so its brush bar isn't as aggressive. If you vacuum a house with both a Dyson will pick up more in the long run.
As far as the machine being cheap plastic. They are made out of ABS plastic the same things crash helmets are made out of. I think is a crash helmet is made out of the same thing it is pretty strong.
Most people don't take care of a vacuum the way you should. As long as you clean the filter every 6 months on a Dyson you won't lose suction.

I've been using an Orek for years, and was pleased that it finally broke enough today that I could justify buying a vacuum that actually picks up dirt. I ran right out and bought a Dyson. “Yeah” for me!
I've vacuumed several times this week, including earlier today, with the Orek. The Dyson picked up a ton of stuff! It also pulled the pile up so that my carpet looks newer and feels softer when walking.
Cleaning the steps was a breeze, and emptying the full cannister was a delight! One of the things I hated most about the Orek that it filled my home with the scent of old dog everytime I used it – the odor is trapped in the cloth that covers the bag and gets worse each month.
I was originally planning to keep the Orek in order to have a vacuum on each level of the house, but after seeing the Dyson at work, my husband won't let me keep the Orek in the house.
It's impossible to know if the reason I'm happy with the Dyson is a “trick” because I can actually see the dirt in the cannister, or because of the marketing hype, or because it's purple (my favorite color!). But I really don't care – it was fun to use, and anything that makes cleaning fun is ok with me!
Who knew folks could get so passionate about a vacuum?

Well im Amazed after reading these posts.
I repair dyson vacuums for a living here in the UK.
If im really honest i would say dyson vacuums are the best thing that has ever happened in our trade for being so UNRELIABLE.
4 Years ago we nearly shut down our repair busines, Then we started to see the DC01 Machines come in to be repaired. Shortly followed by the DC02, 03 04,07, We thought all are birthdays had come at once.
These machines claim NO LOSS OF SUCTION. But that is the most common complaint.
We love them to bits, Without the good old unreliable dyson i would have been unemployed a long time ago.
So i say to you all keep buying them & keep people like me in plenty of work.
PS… Heres a good one for you all how can a filter be lifetime, When the nature of the filter is to catch dust !! THINK ABOUT IT….

I just bought the DC15 (The Ball) Dyson and I've been very impressed. Both my wife and her mom own a WindTunnel vacuum that doesn't pick up as much as the DC15 does.
In fact, since the WindTunnel bagless system was so hard to empty, after the test, I used the DC15 to clean out the WindTunnel cannister. That was neat.
I suffer from cat allergies. My wife and I have 2, and my in-laws have 3. Since aquiring the DC15 (and letting my mom-in-law borrow it once a week to do her normal vacuuming) my allergy response has been drastically reduced. I love being able to breathe.
All I can go by is what I've had in front of me. The WindTunnel did not work as well FOR ME. It did miss a lot of stuff in the carpet that the DC15 was able to pick up FOR ME. Although the DC15 is plastic, FOR ME it feels pretty sturdy and I'm able to vacuum with ease.
I hope that helps. Again, this is MY experience with it.

I have been cleaning houses for the past three years. I was using a commercial Hoover vacuum until about a year ago when I purchased the Dyson animal. Let me tell you it puts all the others to shame… the other day I sucked up a 3-inch screwdriver, and even though it clogged the bottom of the hose, it still continued to clean the carpet. Talk about suction. I use my Dyson just about everyday and have never had a problem with it. I know many people that complain about a nauseating smell (i.e. wet dog) coming from their vacuum a few times after use.. I have never experienced that and I clean houses with several dogs. It is worth the investment, I bought mine on ebay for $450… but just like anything it has gone down in price.. you can get a new yellow model (works the same) for about 260. Three words: Lifetime Hepa Filter. It's a great thing. The only downfalls I noticed are the weight, and hassle of switching from upright to canister, but the positive far outweigh the negatives. Cleaning services such as Merry Maids who i previously worked for, use commercial vacuums with parts that can be easily and inexpensively replaced, so if u use a cleaning service beware of this. My customers know that they are getting quality. If you have any questions, my e-mail is Lbcleans@hotmail.com …. Lindsay, NJ

I read the posts extolling the virtues of Dyson and am amazed at how effective simple marketing can be.
Dysons sure do look different. They cost a lot. They suck like the devil at the hose. And then there's those colors… nifty. But guess what? They don't clean the floor as well as most every other vacuum out there.
Don't believe me? Vacuum a carpet with a Dyson. Then vacuum that same carpet with any decent mid-priced vacuum. You'll pick up a ton of stuff that the Dyson just misses, just like the guy who posted a while back found when comparing Dyson to Miele.
Oh, and the “doesn't lose suction” argument? Rubbish. Forget the fact that the Dyson DOES lose suction if you don't wash out the stupid filter every so often. Or, if junk gets hung up on the little holes in the dust cup, that'll slow it down. And, best of all, if you vacuum up a bunch of flour or drywall dust, the Dyson cyclones will clog and you'll need to disassemble it or send it in for repair. Wow, what a great deal!
The good vacuums out there (the ones that score well in Consumer Reports, like the Kenmores or the Hoover Windtunnels) will outclean the Dyson EVEN WHEN THEY ARE FULL. And, if you jam them up with drywall dust or something nasty all you have to do is replace the bag. If you have a bagless, just clean off or replace the filter, and it'll be as good as new.
I know people in the UK where Dyson started and they tell me that their version of Consumer Reports is trashing Dyson, saying they are overpriced, they underperform, and their build quality is mediocre at best.
Of course, those of you who spent huge money on a Dyson don't want to hear any of this, no one wants to feel like a chump. Hey, it's all good. But if you're not indoctrinated into the Dyson cult yet, do yourself a favor and don't buy the hype, you can buy a better machine for a lot less money.

I have recently been doing a lot of research about these vacuum cleaners and even after reading these posts, it does not really help out.
A friend of mine bought a Hoover windtunnel self-propelled from Spiegel for 80 bucks. Great price, and I would have one for that. He loves it and says that it cleans great, just clean the filter every time you vacuum. I don't have a problem with that, but some people might.
As for allergies, I still am not sure why bagless is that bad. You can still ask your son or spouse to empty it and for God sakes – don't do it in your home. How about emptying right into the garbage can outside and holding your breath… Bags sure are dusty when I change them and if these bagless canisters are filling up so quickly – isn't your bag going to fill up quickly too. Those bags sure can get expensive if you are changing them once every couple of weeks as you probably should.
So at one of these vacuum cleaner/sewing warehouses, the repair guy seems to think that Hoovers come in quite a bit more than thy Dyson. That may be because there are more Hoovers. He also TELLS ME ( you never know who to trust) that the Hoovers have far more plastic parts around the motor and fail quite often. Well, I am determined not to believe the hype. At the shop I did hook up a cfm gauge to the Hoover windtunnel (bagged, brand new) and a Dyson (floor model). The Dyson read 115cfm on the gauge and the Hoover ready 28cfm. That's a huge difference. The dude in the shop thought that was a little off, so we grabbed another Hoover (bagged, floor model) and tested suction. The floor model hit 50cfm. Better, but not even half that of the Dyson. I also wonder why there was such a huge difference between the two windtunnels.
Well, are the vacuum cleaners rigged? I don't know, they sell both. Also, when I told the repair guy that I am trying to get rid of my old sharp vacuum cleaner he got all excited and asked me to bring it in for a cleaning/tune up. Apparently he thinks that sharp made pretty good vacuums in the past and that if it is working properly I should not even look at another vacuum. Sure doesn't sound like pressured sales to me.

The Dyson Vacuum Cleaner is great and definetly worth the money if you use it properly. The dyson will never loose section permanetly. Yes you might find that once in a while its not sucking up anything. There are simple ways to fix those problems. Clean your filter. Take the bin out and open the top, remove the filter and wash it under cold water untill there is no more dirt, let it dry overnight. Next make sure there is nothing clogged in the hose by taking the detachable sections off and looking inside. Then put the pieces back on making sure they “click” into place. Next Check the exhaust and entry seals to make sure they are fitted correctly and check the bin entry for blockages. As for consumer reports, they tend to overlook important factors like durablity and how easily they get clogged or overheat. They are also very biased to priced things. As far as i am concerned the dyson was rated so low because consumer reports views it as way too pricey, no its not cheap but its worth it. The hoover self propelled windtunnel is ranked number 1 in consumer reports but like other vacuums it has advantages and disadvantages. It has bags, it weighs more,it's cheaper than dyson (around 299.99) and if you missuse the height adjustment and brush roll knobs they can break easily.

Well, I have owned a Kirby, Kenmore, Royal, and for the past 9 years, been vacuuming my carpets with a Rainbow Vacuum (with the water filter). I have to say, the Rainbow was a great machine to own. Better than the others for cleaning carpets. However, over those 9 years, I became disenchanted with the machine and the time it took to fill the bowl with water, it was a canister vac (which I did not like, even when I purchased the vac) clean-up etc.
I say all of this to say that I just purchased a Dyson CD-07 and I am in LOVE! My carpets look better and cleaner than after using the rainbow, and they looked better after the rainbow treatment than all the others put together. Here is the Deal.
There are literally hundreds of different vacuums on the market, made made by dozens of manufacturers and each one is claims to have the most polished apple of the entire lot. They all claim to be better, and in the end, you will have to make your own judgement.
If you always what you always have, you will always get what you have always gotten. Simply put, purchase a 100 dollar vacuum and if you expect 400 dollar results, you will be disappointed. Dyson Rules at my house.

This vacuum is the biggest rip off I have ever seen in my life!!! I paid over $450.00 for this piece of #!*&. When you need help fixing something the customer service people are not very friendly, also if you have to send it to be repaired they do not give loaner vacuums. So you cannot vacuum for a month. Might as well by a cheap one every year!!!! I would not recommond this vacuum to anyone!!

Having just bought the 07 (going through sears.com after rebate it's $315 for a couple more days – or $350 if bought in store for another week or so), several immediate impressions:
- about the same weight as the Hoover uprights I've had before
- with the brush off on fine carpets, it works great, although the suction is high enough that there's moderate effort in pushing it across
- no, I'm not going to use it for drywall dust. I've got a ShopVac for that. Right tool for the job, you know.
- the parts are well-engineered, in terms of fitting precisely
- it's much quieter than my Hoovers

Had my DC03 for so long I can't remember, it's at least 7 years old – and has been great. Got it when my existing cleaner (which was ~1 year old) couldn't cope with dog hairs, but wouldn't go back now, despite not being a dog owner anymore.
The dyson has handled some terrible stuff, most recently when I lent it to neighbours with house-rabbits. It came back wedged with rabbit hairs, rabbit droppings (ew) and bits of chewed cardboard. Admittedly, I was a bit hacked off, but the blockages were easy enough to remove. I just love the way it comes apart so easily.
It may have met it's final challenge however, as last week the plastic that allows the main head to hinge with the upright section, has broken. Not sure whether to offset the cost of repair against buying a new cleaner (first choice will be another Dyson). However I can get the complete head for £30 inc. postage, but will have to fit it myself. Tonight it's out with the torx bits to see how tricky it'll be…
(Never thought I'd be so passionate about a household appliance!)

TEST TEST

My husband suprised me with a Dyson for Christmas. Because of the price, I figured I would keep the one I have, I didn't even dare to dream. Turns out another hockey dad told him how wonderful the Dyson Animal was so he went all out.
But I do need help. I read some very thoughtful comments and think I may be in the right place for an answer to a pressing Dyson question. He goes…
HOW DO YOU REMOVE STUFF FROM THE BRUSH? Is there a better way to remove strings and hair than scissors and finger pulling?
Dreamer

Man, the Dyson vacuums are sweet. Suck like crazy, no bags. Can't beat that. I was confused about which one to get, so I checked out http://www.dysonreviews.com and went with the dc07 animal. Great vac.

I run a vacuum business and know vacuums inside and out. I have repaired and sold vacuums for almost 5 years. Without a question, in my opinion, the dyson vacuum is the best vacuum on the market. I have read this forum and find many untrue comments concerning the dyson and many overinflated comments concerning other brands.
Many main advantages of the dyson:
- Built to last and much fewer return problems than other brands
- 17' Reach hose for stair cleaning, ceiling corners, etc.
- Never loses suction
- no bages to buy
- As powerful as a shop vacuum
- The easiest vacuum to empty
- You can vacuum for 6 months to a year before checking the filter
- No dust in the air while vacuuming
Oreck has recently been advertising how much dust bagless vacs put into the air. HA – I had to laugh at that. It really shows that they are trying to fend off the growing dyson marketshare in the US. Sorry, but Orecks statements are total BS when it comes to the Dyson vacuum. The air leaving the dysob vacuum is cleaner then when it enters. Nice try Oreck, getting desperate?
If you want the cleanest floors, buy a dyson. They ar well engineered and truly amazing

oh dear. How many of these anonymous “i love dyson yummy” comments are genuine ? Most of all even if they are genuine they are nearly all written by new or recent purchasers. I've had my DC05 since 2001. Today in desperation I wrote to Dyson uk :

“Dear Sir, Madam,
I bought my DC05 Motorhead in March 2001. I was impressed with its design, technology and specifications and, as an ex-pat living and working in France I was happy to be able to buy British. In short I fell, hook, line and sinker for all the marketing hype. So I bought a “Dyson — the cleaner that doesn't lose suctionâ€Â?
Indeed…the only “suckers in this business appear to be your long suffering clients.
I expected a vacuum cleaner costing over £300 when I bought it (3 290 FFR to be precise) to last longer than a piffling 4 years (and I’m being generous considering the number of breakdowns under guarantee and my own repairs). One of the reasons which convinced me was to naively believe that at that price, one gets what one pays for in terms of quality. How wrong I was. Fortunately for Dyson, the guarantee only lasts 2 years – unless you pay for an extension “but why should I need an extension? I thought, “if this product is as good as they say it is
The internet was – and still is – full of reviews by delighted Dyson owners, that is to say new Dyson owners (i.e. they’ve just bought one !) Back in 2001 I was one of them – I’d even managed to convince my wife ! I recommended Dyson to all my friends. Several of them thought we were mad to spend over “300 quid on that? It’s only a bloody vacuum cleaner for god’s sake !â€Â?. I regret to acknowledge today that they appear to have been right.
Last night, digging a little deeper on internet I found other long term DC05 users who are as unhappy as me, and we all have the same problems. If you don’t believe me , suggest you take a look at http://www.reviewcentre.com/review22559.html but then I’m sure you are au fait with all these problems. I even found some others I was not yet aware of – including what is probably the reason for the final breakdown – upon examination I can see that the cables inside the cable winder are frayed and worn and are probably either sectioned or have caused a permanent short-circuit (my digital tester gives no reading at the hose electrical connector on the cylinder).
I’d like to point out that I have always scrupulously followed the use and maintenance instructions, and that the unit is in normal domestic use (and no, I have not been vacuuming up builder’s rubble or plaster dust).
The DC05 MH is a technoboffin’s dream, the theory is fine but the DC05 MH is simply too complex and is neither robust nor reliable in daily use. This is 1970’s British Leyland (accelerates like the space shuttle, has flashing lights all over the place, but falls apart after a couple kilometres) at a Rolls Royce price. I note on your website that this model is no longer produced.
Here is the list of the problems I’ve encountered since I bought my DC05 Motorhead in March 2001. I’m sure none of them will surprise you as they are so “typical, but here’s the story anyway:
After a few months the cable winder started to wind itself up on its own without being asked, necessitating the use of a strong clothes peg as the unit does not like operating with a partly wound cable which gets very warm. When you do want it to wind, you have to “coax it for the final 1.5 meters. It didn’t seem worth the hassle of contacting after sales for something so trivial.
In February 2002 the main motor failed and was replaced under guarantee.
February 2003 the motorhead/turbobrush failed and was replaced under guarantee (just)
February 2005, the motorhead failed again. The machine was now no longer under guarantee and spares were prohibitively expensive. On disassembly I discovered that the fine electrical supply cables to the motorhead had been sectioned by rubbing due to movement of the brush head. I replaced them myself and the cleaner worked again.
October 2005 – this time, the connectors in the wand were worn out. I managed to repair them and the machine worked again for a while.
January 2006, the motorhead started to function intermittently again
March 2006, the machine speeds up, slows down and cuts out completely from time to time while in use, before then finally “giving up the ghost mid April. I can’t believe it, this machine which cost £320 is only 5 years old !
On the Dyson website parts are even more expensive than the last time I looked. I notice that the DC05 MH is no longer produced, and certain components are marked as out of stock. In any case, for the prices being asked for spares I could buy a new vacuum cleaner from another manufacturer.
I’m not happy so decide in any case to contact Dyson France. I find the after sales department via internet and send them a mail on 20/4/2006. No reply.
On 9/5/2006 I phone their office in Paris, good news – they have received my mail, but haven’t got around to replying (or even acknowledging) yet. They assure me of a reply the same day. No news.
10/5/2006 I ‘phone them a second time, they promise to phone me back. No call, but an e.mail awaits me at home, progress at last ! They propose as a “geste commercial to supply me with a new motorhead and wand/hose assembly for the princely sum of 90€ (reduced from normal price 150€ !) and guaranteed 6 months (not much risk for Dyson there).
Spend another 90€ for it to break down on me again in a years time ? They must be kidding. (see my mail and their proposition attached).
So there you have it, the whole long sad story. Did you withdraw this model because of all its problems ? Or did you know from the beginning that the DC05 MH was simply a sexy bit of marketing which would never stand up to the rigors of everyday use ?
If you really are proud of your company and your technology I think you owe a little more to your customers than you are giving. We trusted you – we had to to lay out that sort of money – but you have betrayed that trust. This is very sad.
This is a last resort letter before I contact various consumer associations in the UK and France and buy myself a new vacuum cleaner (sadly if it comes to that, it will not be a Dyson). I hope that at the very least you will have the decency to reply to this missive with something a little more serious than a stereotyped answer and I don’t consider it unreasonable for my part to expect rather more. Just imagine for a moment how you would react if you were in my seat. Would you be a satisfied customer ? Would you recommend Dyson to your friends ? What does Mr Dyson think ?
I’m looking forward very much to hearing from you. Go on, surprise me and redeem yourselves in the process…
Robin Forrest, a very, very disappointed Dyson customer.”
I rest my case your honour. Now I must wait. Again.

Hey Chris! Get a Meile.. http://www.mielevacuums.com Half the price with a lot more power, and it doesn't loose suction either I find. Been using one for about 4 years. Tried a Dyson for my business.. Broke in 7 months.. 180Cdn to fix it.. Threw it out. Also, if you want to fix it yourself, it's a pain in the ass to do..

My wife bought a Dyson Animal. She loves it! Me I think it’s ok but how many other vacuums I could buy for the price. It doesn’t suck all the fur first time over the carpet, it gets jammed on the edge of the rug, the hose blocks – meh, how do I tell her?

The only (HUGE) problem for me with the Animal is that it will NOT fit under beds and sofas and dressers and the attachments do not move at all well over the carpet. So, while it may be the best cleaner FOR WHAT IS OUT IN THE OPEN it gets an F from me for cleaning under furniture. So really my room is not clean at all, when all the dust mites and dust remain under my bed. I wish they would develop a canister vac – it still has all the problems of a clumsy upright with a bunch of attachments that rarely get used because it is such a hassle to stop everything and “attach” the attachments. UGH – still dusty in Virginia.

I would not buy this vacume cleaner again. WATCH the Seals! I am cleaning my house for a month to get the dust out when the seals failed!!!

I have had a dyson DC04 Absolute for 10 years now the good thing about these vacuums is they really clean carpets well and just about every part is replaceable and they are very easy to repair yourself I have repaired mine twice in 10 years due to simple faults which has cost me very little the shell of the dyson is made up of extremely strong plastic also the parts are very cheap on ebay and you can even buy reconditioned ones 75% cheaper than getting a new one so I would recommend Dysons also they are enviromentally friendly as you dont have to throw away just replace the part thats broken

WE HAVE HAD OUR DYSON FOR 2 YEARS AND I WOULDNT USE ANOTHER EVER AGAIN! I LOVE MY DYSON! IT HAS A STRONG SUCTION AND WILL PICK UP ANYTHING! I USE MY DAILY AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WHAT SO EVER! YOU WONT REGRET IT!

I’d like to know if this is the very best vaccuum money can buy? How much would the very best you have to offer cost me? Can my payments be broken down into monthly installments? Do I get any free gifts with my purchase? Can my purchase be done over the phone with check by phone? How many years warranty does the very best vaccuum have? Does it come with attachments and what are thoes attachments? I just purchased an Oreck that did well at first but then just quit picking up for some unknown reason. Also what is your very best top of the line commercial vaccuum along with all the questions pertaining to the one listed above?

I’ve had my yellow Dyson for 2 years and it has never failed to amaze me with its cleaning ability. I have indoor pets and have a lot of hair to contend with, and the Dyson combats this problem with ease. It works as great today as it did the day I bought it. The attachments do not clog up and lose suction either, which is important for cleaning pet hair.

As for not being able to fit under furniture – that’s what the extendable hose and attachments are for. How difficult is it to lean down and clean up under the bed? Perhaps what some of these naysayers are looking for is a maid instead of a vacuum. ;)

I too repair dysons. How long to change a belt on a DC04? Most of the morning.. Any other vaccy? – minutes..

Superb salesmanship Mr Dyson.. The bagless cleaner. The bag on a conventional cleaner is the filter too. Replace the bag – replace the filter – in effect. Dyson filters clog within a few runs around the house, reducing efficiency – so wheres the advantage in that?

My top tip is the Panasonic BAG MCE470 or similar – easy to service and give as good cleaning in my humble oppinion.

Ohh and the British company bit? Look where they are made now. The only person profiting from these nowadays is Dyson upper management.

I have been using Dyson vacuums for years, and they are especially more efficient than any Hoover, Dirt Devil, or Eureka I have owned in the past. I recently bought the new DC17, and it is by far the best vacuum I have ever owned. It picks up so much deep embedded filth like sand and animal hair with an excellent level of suction that never reduces. It definitely lives up to the marketing hype. Plus, they have five year warranties now, no other big box brand can beat that.

Here’s an idea for those of you that just find the Dyson irresistible, but aren’t happy with the repair, parts availability and poor customer service issues that I hear a lot on these blogs.

Dyson’s original patent expired and Hoover built on the patent’s blueprint to create the Hoover Mach 5.

For the price ($168) it has turned out to be one heck of a machine. It uses the multi chamber technology that resists suction loss (and yes every vacuum will lose suction if you don’t clean a filter or two).

However, Hoover mates the Dyson technology with an automatic cord winder, two great hose attachment tools, a light, and the ability to turn the brush roller off on hard surfaces.

This is the first vacuum that I’ve owned where the attachment tool has it’s own brush roller – It’s a belt driven brush roller that requires no screwdriver in order to access and replace the belt. This is usually overlooked by most manufacturers – as it’s not a bullet point feature.

Suction is strong, but the secret is in the brush roller. It’s so vigorous in what it picks up, you have to dial back the roller height or risk thinning out your carpet fibers.

The Mach 5 also has a premotor filter, exhaust filter and hepa filter. Few vacuums go quite to this level, and it greatly reduces the amount dust and pollens that are ejected into the air.

The roller can be turned off at will…..and automatically turns off when the vacuum is set upright. Release the vacuum to tilt and the roller re-engages.

The motor is smooth and quiet. You can have a conversation while operating…. I’m able to run the vacuum downstairs after my kids are in bed for quick jobs….. and no one has to turn the TV up when operating.

Hoover sort of solves a few Dyson complaints as it’s parts are easier to get… The cost is 1/3 the price…. and customer service is competitive. It’s not a cult product where the company (Dyson) insists on putting a vice grip on every service related issue that comes up.

The only draw back so far to this machine is that (like Dyson), it’s a heavier machine than many out there like Orek.

Hoover combats that by giving you plenty of hose to get up your stairs and a longer cord (which did I mention is retractable?) I really like that feature… The cord stays extended to the length you need and the retracts at a push of a button.

So if you want the Dyson mystic without the Dyson price, the Dyson customer service problems, and a Dyson that actually has lights and attachments…..

The Hoover Mach 5 might be the answer.

If you are only willing to spend $300 on a vaccuum, expect it to last years and years, and never have to clean hair out of it, time to get a reality check. We have a Filter Queen, expensive yes, but the motor is guaranteed forever at a replacementcost of $80.00 (older model, but it stays at that price forever for my machine. . older ones are $25.00 replacement ones.)

So. buy a better machine, our recent repair/maintenance (once ever 2-3 years, in addition to my simply cleaning it up once every 6 months of so)

I owned a dyson for 2 years now; its parts broke down twice……but the one good thing about dyson is their customer care service. They just sent the new parts to me free of charge. That’s the only good thing about dyson; it does do its job well but everytime I tried to clean the barrel, the dust flew into my face & you can never wash the ‘cyclone’. Why??? I still haven’t figure it out…..maybe one of you can tell me how to clean the dust that is always stuck inside that ‘cyclone’??? I really would like to know how. My sister has a rainbow vacuum…..now that one is really good!!! I’m just waiting for my dyson to ‘die’ before I can purchase a rainbow!!!

Well I’m behind on this question but here goes. I’ve had my dyson for over 5 years. I got the animal. For my two cents, for a home environment, it’s the best thing out there. I’ve gone through so many vacs and put up with them just not fitting the bill. When we saw the dyson it was a steep price for us, but having just come into a little extra money, we splurged. I have not been disappointed. I am a real person, as I suspect are the others who love their dysons. I would love to buy another but this one just keeps on going.

I was at Best Buy to get a vacuum and I couldn’t believe the difference when I used the brand new Dyson and also used the Hoover Tempo at 80 dollars because consumer reports said it was so good.
They had some dirt, rice and nerds candy in other binds which we threw down and the freakin 80 dollar tempo did way better, i couldn’t believe it.

Please try it yourself! The dyson couldn’t pick up the rice or nerds candy at all, kept shooting it everywhere. Just my 5 cents.

Well, I’ve had DC08 Root Cyclone for 2-3 years now, and it is an amazing unit. I’ve saved loads on not having to purchase any bags! The unit is robust (the plastic is of great quality), the company really seems to have thought about everything. When this Vacum cleaner dies – if it does, I will have no hesitation in buying another Dyson. Prior to this, i was replacing vacum cleaners every 2 years odd, due to their inefficieny. Hail Dyson – the company that took us away from god awful bags! Now all Dyson need do, is make the dust emptying process a little more hygienic, i.e. when I put the dust in the bin, I don’t want a little plume of it seeming to come back up after me!

I purchased a Dyson DC17 for my brand new carpet. It’s a beautiful frieze that cost a fortune. It’s 18 months old and now it’s ruined because the rotating brush ate the fibers. I have an an independent carpet inspector comes out and tell me that it was caused by the vacuum. I am sick. Their manual states that if the carpet begins to friz to turn off the brush, but at that point, the carpet is already ruined. It may work well for other carpets, but AVOID THE DYSON AT ALL COSTS IF YOU LOVE YOUR CARPET!!!!

We have had our Dyson Animal for about 6 years and the only problem I’ve encountered is the vacuum losing suction when the filters get clogged after using Capture powder. Capture seems to do really well at cleaning up the pets accidents, but the powder really does make a mess inside the vacuum. I wish the dirt chamber, as well as the rest of the machine was easier to disassemble for cleaning. The upper chamber is a pain to get apart and reassemble . We have two cats and an Akita. The Akita loses so much fur every time it blows it’s coat I would probably have gone through a bag per day with another unit. I have actually used the vacuum hose to suck the fur right off the dog. All in all I still like the machine and would probably buy another one.

All vacuum cleaners are bad, get clogged and don’t really have 100% cleaning ability after a short amount of time. As a salesman for the Rainbow Cleaning system over the last 14 years I have seen all the systems on the market. The Dyson with it’s high cfm is impressive but I’ll also seen the damage it does to carpet over time (but don’t know why). If I saw a better system than the Rainbow I would stop telling people about our system. The differences between any dry filtered system and the water-based Rainbow are too many to list on this forum.

Short story – I had a lady who owned a cleaning business invite me to her home to show her the Rainbow. She used a Dyson for over five years in her home daily and LOVED her Dyson. This was a test she knew she would win. After seeing the difference between the two systems on her carpet she invested in our system.

All dry filter systems get clogged by design and the more they trap the dust from coming out into to the living area the more they clog and lose something more important than suction and that’s airflow, seems like common sense to me.

PS: Added bonus: they last a LONG time!! 20-30 years if taken care of properly.

I’ll enjoyed all the post and learned about about vacuums.

I would love to get the stats in difference vacuum models and the airflow rates both with a new bag/filter and then after one hour of cleaning. No one is putting out this type of information or I just can’t find it. Can anyone help me on this?

Thanks – only my 2 cents -

Disappointing is the mark of our Dyson animal. It picks up stuff fine with the hose, but carpet beater is no winner. 4 dogs and cat as well as us in and out multiple times a day means the dyson must be used daily if we are to keep floors clean.

But the foam filter clogs readily from the dust collected from our floor requiring a teardown to get to it, a wash, and then at least a 12 hour dry. We have to do this job very often, at least once a week. We must empty dirt sometimes 4 times a day.

The plastic keeper that is on the bottom of the main canister is broken on one side so doesn’t hang on very well.

I need a better vacuum!

The volume picked up on our first level fills the dyson, sometimes four times before the
