I think parts of the southeast and southern parts of the city have some fairly high crime stats, but can have cheaper places to live, and that side of the city (on the bay side) definitely has more sun than the ocean side. Apparently the Haight area is not a good place to be after dark, either. If you have some places in mind, you can e-mail me (gretchen@pirillo.com) to ask what we think of them, though we are experts by no means.
