Ubuntu has all sorts of applications, Kubuntu has a novice-friendly interface, and Xubuntu is the snappiest of the three...take your pick! Frankly, I couldn't care less if we were still using DOS if it could still run the apps I want... I don't spend my days browsing through my files with the glass/transparent GUI came with the OS.
