TeamSpeak vs Ventrilo vs Mumble Audio for Gamers

Voice over IP (or VoIP) is just not going to go away, despite what Wicket wants. It’s not just here for awhile, it’s definitely going to be around. You may have used Skype, or Vonage before to talk to someone. If you have, then you’ve used VoIP. But if you need to talk to several people at once, these are not good choices. What do you use in situations like these?
Some of you use Teamspeak or Ventrilo, and those are both good options. The Mods and I use Ventrilo here on the live stream at times to talk to each other, have conferences, or even let them talk to all of you. Once our Ventrilo license expires, we may just start using this new open source program: Mumble.
Mumble is an open source, low-latency, high quality voice chat software primarily intended for use while gaming. Even though it says it’s “intended” for gaming, it can be used by anyone. It won’t suck up your bandwidth like Skype will. There isn’t much of an interface to Mumble, but it IS clean. And – it’s seriously configurable! Being open source… it’s free to use.
If you’ve used anything else for this type of communication, consider Mumble. It is mature enough to use, and I definitely recommend it.

I have been an avid user of mumble for years… im glad to see it gaining some press coverage. I like your review. I think you should also comment on voice quality. IMHO voice quality has been equal to if not better than vent. opens source is the way to go! I have run my server on my gamimg computer while gaming and it uses so little bandwidth that i have never even noticed any difference in my game play. it is just as stable as if i were just running the game itself. mumble… 5*+!!!

Mumble rocks!
I move my entire clan(over 100+ members) to mumble last week which i bought from http://www.mumblevoice.com and couldn’t be happier!
Just like what nick mentioned, the voice quality is good and bandwidth isn’t used so much like vent or TS.
i give a 10/10!!

Just a follow-up to anyone who might have used Mumble in the past and been turned off by one thing or another – Mumble 1.2 officially went “alpha” quality yesterday… the majority of complaints I’d heard about Mumble from people who use the 1.1.x tree are addressed in 1.2.
I *highly* recommend checking out one of the snapshots, there’s a ton of great stuff and CELT sounds phenomenal.

Hi everyone,
I agree Mumble is pretty cool for a open source project. I’ve been gaming with Skype for about 3 years and my company has been developing a new add-on for it. Skype for Power Gamers (S4PG) is a client server product that will enable a user to setup one or more Skype instances to act like Ventrilo servers do (managing calls, users, chats, TTS announcements, etc).
Skype’s new SILK codec (introduced in Skype 4.0) really can’t be beat. The audio is great, latency is not even noticeable, and it uses quite a bit less bandwidth and cpu resources than Skype 3.8.
If you’d like to check out S4PG to to http://s4pg.us .
S4PG.Server public beta is scheduled to be released in the next couple months and S4PG.Client Alpha is available for download.
