Task Switching
Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed
I often see my parents working on their computer. They will open a task, then close it. Open another… then close it. Many people don’t realize that you can have several tasks open at once, and easily switch between them. If you’re like me, you have your email open, maybe a browser window, a word processing program, and who knows what else. Well, I’m going to tell you about a keyboard shortcut you can use in OS X or Windows to make your life much easier.
For Windows, you see that little Alt key? It’s down there to the left of your space bar. Hold that down, and then hold down your Tab key. This will open the task switcher. Simply tap the Tab key again until the program or application you want to switch to is highlighted, and release the buttons. That app is automatically moved to the front of all the others! How easy is that?
For OS X, it’s very similar. Hold down the Command key (the little key to the left of the space bar, with the open Apple on it), and the Tab key. This will open the Task Switcher for the Mac. Use it exactly the same way as you would the one above for Windows.
This is so much faster and easier than sifting through collapsed tabs down on your taskbar. It’s also nicer than closing an app, opening a new one… and finding out you needed that first one open still.

pronounced “Expoze-ay” There are a couple of videos where he mentions it and I agree, with the squeeze buttons on a Mac mouse, there is no easier way to switch programs than Expose.

I use Alt+tab with taskswitchpro, which shows the window you are switching to rather than just what it is

Chris Pirillo,
I think that it is very useful and I use it everyday. In fact, today, I was teaching my very attractive lab partners in biology lab how to use this while working on our digital lab notebook. I am a guy in a group with three girls. Lucky me! We use my Macbook Pro (best computer ever made) to do all of our work. It makes everything look great. By the way, we ran into a problem transferring the digital lab notebook by email because it is a 30Mb ppt. I have solved that problem with Google Docs. Thank you for all the great tips
Sincerely,
Icenine89

Or on Vista: Win + Tab for the scrolly windows thing. Or even better, Vista users can install switcher:
http://insentient.net/
For Expose-ish niceness. (works great with dual monitors, try it)
I’ve got it set to ctrl+tab, so that ctrl+tab, alt+tab, and win+tab are all a left-hand away, and ready to be used depending on my needs (generally: 2-3 programs I’ll use alt-tab, 3+ I’ll use ctrl+tab, and … erm.. come to think of it, I never use win+tab. Go figure)

One thing I like about Vista, is the Switch Between Windows Button on the taskbar. It shows every window/program on the desktop in a cool arrangement in which you can preview the window, go through them and open the one you want. I referred an older friend to your page for these type of tips.

I think his videos would be great for my grandparents. I watch these for the random things in the IRC. “if you hold shift, you can move in reverse” xD

hey fernando, many of the readers here are new to computing. Even users of many years dont know some of the basic short cuts that help quite a bit. We all need some help.
John Buffman tip is a excellent tip also. On the Vista or Xp bottom bar if you have 3 or 4 programs/files open, right click then select “Show side by side” You see your apps opened and able to drag file between them or double click to maximize it. Then just minimize it to go back to its place…….It a great alternative to tabbing between windows.
This is why i used to come more to this site was for tips for all levels. I have been computing since ‘84 …….
Lately it has become more Vista bashing and Apple praising….I really do hope we can get back to helpful (basic & advanced) topics…..anyways just a thought………Thanks Chris…….

Although, how come these videos are short and not as ‘from-the-heart’ as previous/other videos?
Are they for something in particular?

I personally use Alt-Esc on Windows XP. It works the same as Alt-Tab, but it instantly switches between windows instead of giving the menu-thing. It is better than Alt-Tab if you have just two or three windows open.

I agree with Mike. I like what Alt-Esc is trying to do, but I think it does a shitty job.
All I want is one button to move to the next task and one button to move to the previous task.
Alt-Esc seems to pick it’s own order.
