Thank you. Happy holidays to you and yours. I use “Happy holidays” as an all inclusive term prior to Thanksgiving, not as a substitute for Merry Christmas. Thanks for the coupons.

When Fed Mart closed it’s doors in Southern California in the mid to late 70’s, those existing facilities became Targets. The management (Dayton-Hudson group) had a strict boycott policy of hiring ex Fed Mart employees. The union that represented the former Fed Mart employees paid for billboards near or sometimes even in Target parking lots. The sign was a simple dart board with a simple arrow in it driving the point ” Boycott Target.” I discussed this with a Fed Mart employee during the final clearance sale at a store on Harbor Blvd. in Garden Grove, Ca.( stores almost exclusively hirer outside liquidators now hiring outside help providing no real deals) when I found out that he along with his other colleagues were not going to be able to work for Target. This was within an earshot of many people and a scuffle ensued necessitating a nearby security guards assistance as i was negotiating my exit. For that little melee I’ll take some responsibility. The sign, no, as it was a no brainier A few years later a vice president at the headquarters of the corporation famously said ” I .don’t like Californian’s much. They tend to do their own thing.” He might as well dug himself a grave with one of the snow shovels that he ordered to be put on front end caps even in Southern California stores along with woodpecker feed where beach chars and beach balls would have been more appropriate given our fall climate as opposed to his in Minnesota. More than a few employees flew out the doors never to return after they read it in one of our larger newspapers confirming their suspicions that corporate didn’t value their massive amount of work and revenue in California, much less respect. A year ago I went Into a Target for the first and last time to get a can of deodorant that P& G sent me a coupon replacement for a defective product.. I asked the guy at the register how was it like working at Target as there was nobody within an ear shot of us.He mentioned he had been there 2 years and they would make sure he stayed on part time status so he wouldn’t qualify for benefits. He said,” it get’s better.” I said,” I hope so.” He said “one of the tricks in keeping his lower work week was to put him on 6 hour daily shifts so they didn’t have to provide.a meal break.” I had to leave and he had a customer by then. He called out to me, “Sir you forgot your deodorant.” ” Keep it, “I said. ” But your coupon.” he said. I said ” Keep that to.” As I walked out into the parking lot I couldn’t help because by my calculations he’d be off at midnight and I would not be getting dinner at that late hour and he would be going to bed hungry a frequent occurrence, given his workweek schedule and the fact that minimum wage in California is way south of $10 an hour. That is really hard on somebody in our expensive state on part time wages with no benefits.Washington state has the best minimum wage and is a lot cheaper than here to live. He would go around in circles with” mismanagement” with that stupid non transaction, not really doing him a favor after all. I’m fully aware of retail pettiness, and Target has proved no exception.I had entertained the thought of giving the boy a plane ticket to Seattle, my birth place. Who doesn’t like Target? Me. And multiple tens of thousands, former Fed Mart employees, former and current Target employees, and I suppose orphaned Mervyns employees( Formally of Dayton Hudson Group.)
