I noticed a thread today on Geeks that is talking about how discussions always end up turning negative in some way. This got me to thinking about conversations I have all over the web – on Geeks, over at Lockergnome, here in my blog, and even on sites like Twitter. It seems no matter what you’re trying to talk about, someone is going to be negative in some way. The people in this particular thread are right – it truly is annoying.

I’m not talking about differing opinions. Those are great, and I welcome them. Hopefully, you like hearing them as well. Having different viewpoints on things allows us to stretch our minds in directions they may not have otherwise gone. It can make us look at things in a whole new way, from a completely different perspective.

The negativity I’m referring to is exactly as it sounds – negativity, for no reason other than to be rude/demeaning. You’ll be having a conversation that’s going along nicely, and some person pops their nose in and starts going off on a tangent about something that may or may not relate to your discussion. They may even be completely rude about it, or directly “attack” someone involved in the thread/post. I really hate that. What’s the point of it? Why must Internet trolls even exist? Can’t we just like shoot them out of a cannon or something?

Seriously, though, why does it seem so difficult these days to have a completely intelligent conversation with others without the fear of someone taking it down a road it should never go? What are your thoughts? Are you seeing more and more of this lately, and how do you get past it to continue your discussion? What else are you reading and/or participating in online that has your mind stretching?

It seems that everyone is doing screencasts, other than me. I do them every so often, but it takes a lot of time. I know I don’t do them as well as many of you can do. So, I’m going to give you an opportunity to do screencasts for my YouTube channel. What’s in it for you? Promotion, of course! You’ll be promoted not only on my YouTube channel, we’ll also link off to YOUR YouTube channel. We’ll also send out notifications on Twitter, Facebook, and promote you in our newsletters. That, my fellow Geeks, is one heck of a lot of promotion! We can promote your YouTube channel, your website, or your Twitter account – it’s entirely up to you!

So what do you need to do? It’s simple, really. Show me what you’ve got. Anything that can be shown on the screen can certainly be screencast. I can accommodate an unlimited amount of screencasters, but not everybody will pass muster.

Record the screencast in high quality, YouTube HD dimensions. Keep the elements and motion lively. Be tasteful. Zoom in where appropriate. I’d currently prefer the videos be done without logos and/or text. No intros, no outtros.
Be mindful of your audio quality (keep it clear and clean). Nobody wants to hear you fumble with the mic or popping your Ps. Properly licensed Creative Commons music would be okay to play in the background (be sure to give credit where credit is due)!
Introduce yourself at the very beginning of the screencast, making certain you state that you’re recording it for Lockergnome’s YouTube channel. Feel free to close the video with a tease to your own YouTube channel AND Lockergnome’s.
Narrate clearly with specific directions. Why do you like the software you’re demonstrating? What’s someone to expect on the Web site you’re sharing with us? If need be, work from your own script.
Don’t upload the screencast to your own YouTube channel first – the idea is to promote it from mine, where more subscribers will see it and discover more of what you do.
If you want to show me what you can do, upload a sample to our Geeks Community so that I can take a look and make a decision. Email me to link me to what you’ve done, and introduce yourself.

Once I’ve accepted you as a regular contributor, you’ll be able to submit an unlimited amount of screencasts for Lockergnome’s channel on YouTube – about anything worth screencasting! Tips, tricks, suggestions, help, tech support, etc.

I get free stuff (software, hardware, etc.!) all the time… and I just don’t have time myself to review them all. I am looking for a few of the best screencasters in our community to help me when the time comes. You can potentially score some free things, simply by being good at reviewing.

Ideally, I would like to post one new screencast per day – created by any one of you. In order to do that, I have to get them from you, so get busy!

I’ve talked before about Internet fame. During my many years online, I’ve seen people gain instant fame online… and seen them fade to nothing just as quickly. It’s interesting to me to try and figure out what makes a certain person or video “famous”. What causes it to go viral? I spend a lot of time reading things on the ‘net. I spend a lot of time pondering what it is that makes people tick. However, I’ve yet to put my finger on exactly what it is about some people that just seem to make them be a star of sorts seemingly overnight.

What do you think? What causes you to suddenly become a “fan” of someone? What is it about them that jumps out at you and draws you in?

I’ve talked quite a lot about social media recently, with good cause… everyone is talking about it! It’s the hot new thing. Wait, no – that’s not right. Social media isn’t “new.” Why do people keep saying it is? The only thing that’s new is the name for it – Social Media. As I said in a video earlier, social media is simply a set of tools we can use to communicate. Heck, we’ve had tools to communicate online for years now. It’s just that today’s tools are so much easier to use, everyone can use them. You don’t have to be a hard-core geek anymore. You simply have to be able to get online, and type something somewhere.

It’s amazing and awesome to me to see the amount of people who are introduced to social media every day. The number of us who just seem to get it is growing faster than I can keep up with. There are those who scoff, claiming social media is a passing phase. HELLO! Where the hell do you get that idea? As I said – I’ve been immersed in social media for about 17 years now. How is that a passing phase?! Those are the people who don’t get it. They are the ones who don’t take understand the immeasurable ways that interacting with others online in this fashion can change their lives. They are the ones who are missing out.

So, I ask again – are YOU a social media geek? Do you get it? What IS social media to you, anyway – and how do you make it a part of your life?

You do know that I have a couple of social media-related sites, right? If you don’t, what rock have you been hiding under? It took me many hours to actually get this video recorded. It’s just not easy for me to do. I’ve been a part of social media since before social media was a title for something. I’ve been conversing online since 1992. That fact alone makes it difficult for me to attempt to tell you where you should start – never mind the fact that social media means different things to different people.

So what IS social media? For me, it boils down to a set of tools that facilitates conversation. Tools have gotten easier to use – they aren’t just for Geeks anymore! With the advent of sites like Facebook and Twitter, literally anyone and everyone can take part in social media. It’s everywhere!

The social media scene here in Seattle is quite vibrant. I’ve been fortunate to meet many of the movers and shakers due to attending things like tweetups. For me, the best ones are the ones where people show up with no hidden agendas… they simply just want to get together, share ideas and thoughts, and hang out. So we’re using the Internet to meet people in real life. We were doing that long ago – we just didn’t have the name social media for what we were doing!

With that comes a lot of people who really don’t know what they’re doing. Many people involve themselves in things like Twitter because they know it’s important – yet they don’t use it right. They just don’t get it, nor do they understand what they should be doing.

So Seattle is pretty active. What about your city? Do you have an active base of people in social media? How active are you in social media? Do you have a number of people who get together in real life after meeting online?

People ask me all the time how they can and should get started in social media. I could tell you that the people I met recently who just got involved in social media within the past six months are the people I look to for inspiration. They didn’t just join.. they get it. They started doing something, and utilizing the social media tools.

The key is to not talk only about what you’re up to – the key is to support what others are doing. Interaction will result, and people will start to support you, as well. Social media is very soilent. It’s all about people.

I have recorded and uploaded over 2000 videos on YouTube, and that’s a lot. Many people have asked me if I would ever go back and caption the videos using YouTube’s caption tool. Sadly, I just don’t have the time to do that. There is a way, though, that you can go in and caption your own videos easily. Caption Tube helps you create captions for your YouTube videos. It’s easy to use and it’s free.

You can incorporate your YouTube videos within this service. Sign in with your YouTube account ID, and it will list all of your YouTube videos that have been uploaded and processed. Press a button to import a video. I can choose to pause the video if I wish, add a caption and the text… even the start time and duration. Then just press the save button, and it’s finished.

When you’re done with captioning the entire video, there are a variety of things you can do. You can save them to a text file, email them to yourself, or even export them in one of a few different formats.

When I first met Traci, I quickly recognized that she takes the time to respond to most (if not all) comments made to her on Twitter, YouTube, her blog, and even in Geeks! This is someone who understands community, and what it takes to make it grow.

In order to have a community, you have to reciprocate and participate. You cannot simply sit there and be elusive. You cannot expect your community to grow itself. You have to nurture it, be a part of it – smack dab in the middle of it. Traci is doing that with her own community, and it shows.

What’s on your screen right now, aside from this video? You probably have things on your desktop, likely all over the place. Have you ever tried screencasting? That’s when you take a recording of whatever is on your screen, and then pushing it out to the Web. Usually, it’s done in conjunction with audio. If you’re interested in getting into screencasting, and tying it into your Twitter account, you should check this resource out.

ScreenJelly allows you to record whatever is on your screen – for free! Screenjelly records your screen activity with your voice so you can spread it as a video via Twitter or email. Use it to quickly share cool apps or software tips, report a bug, or just show stuff you like.

How is this useful? Let’s say that you have a family member on the computer on the other side of the world. Ask them to record what’s on their screen so that you can help them with any errors they may be seeing, or something they are having trouble explaining.

You don’t have to install anything in order to use ScreenJelly, as long as you have Adobe Flash. Push your screencasts right to Twitter, where a link to your recording will be posted. You cannot push to YouTube at this time, but hopefully that will come in future versions!

I’ve had the Kodak Zi6 pocket video recorder for awhile, and have even posted a review of it. I like it fairly well, so I was excited to test out the new Zx1 when Kodak sent it to me for review. Not only was I ready for even better quality, I was stoked to find out that it is considered to be “weather-proof”. Since I was heading out to Kayak this weekend, I figured it would be the perfect camera to take along.

The main thing that bothered me about the Zi6 was the fact that it dropped frames quite often. It was a good camera otherwise, but frame dropping is just a big no-no in my book. I wanted to give this Zx1 a fair shake.

The Zx1 records 720p at 60 fps with 16:9 aspect ratio. The rubberized doors protect all ports from rain, snow, sand and more. The view screen is 2 inches, and there are cables included to allow you to watch footage on your HDTV. You can also easily upload recorded footage to YouTube with the built-in USB and software.

We’ll see this weekend how well the Zx1 stands up in an outdoor setting. If you have a Zx1, feel free to leave me a follow-up comment or video. Let me know what you like and don’t like about this particular camera. I’ll be sure to post more at a later date on my experiences.

I love how during my travels through our sites every day, I come across something that really makes me stop and think. Today’s post is found on Geeks, and it’s called What do You Treasure Most in Life. Not only did I have to stop and take time to think this through for myself, but I also am curious to see your answers. Reading through the thread, it’s heartening to see that many people place their family/kids/friends at the top of their lists. Too often, we let the material get in the way – or at least our quest for what’s tangible. Kat summed it up beautifully, reminding us:

Even with the economy in the toilet – we have much to be grateful for in life, and much to treasure. Don’t let a minute of life pass you by without remembering things like this.

We are seeing news articles daily about people taking their lives over losing their jobs, or falling far behind in their bills. Heck, we’re even reading about people who are taking the lives of others – including their own children. We hear of the layoffs, and many of you have been affected by them yourself. But when you take a moment to stop and really think – you are still blessed. You have family and friends who love you. You have your health (hopefully!) and mental well-being. You have your brain, and the ability to think, do and create. You have your freedom (in most countries). You have YOU.

Sometimes you may have a song running through your head. You may know the artist and title of the song, but you cannot find it online. You want to hear the song, yes. But you don’t want to have to surf for the right video on YouTube, and you don’t want to download something in order to be able to listen. So what now? When you just want to hear a song, try using JustHear!t.

A lot of people are on YouTube, and they may happen to have an iPod. If so, they may want to start using tooble. With a single click of a button, tooble can easily download any video from YouTube. All you need to do is check the videos you want, hit the download button, and tooble takes care of the rest. With support for queuing, you can check as many videos as you like and tooble will download each of them simultaneously.

As soon as you finish downloading a video, tooble will start converting it to .mp4 format automatically! You know how you normally have to use separate tools and/or software to download, convert, and even view videos? With tooble, all you need is this one small little tool.

tooble is a desktop application that not only lets you download videos, but you can browse YouTube as well. You can look at your subscriptions, lists, or even via categories. This is available for both Mac and Windows, which is very cool. Even better, this project was started by three 18 year olds. Let me tell you, these guys have a huge future ahead of them.

I asked one of the guys why investors would be interested in a free program for your computer that allows you to download YouTube videos and put them onto your iPod. I was seriously impressed with the answer. They believe (and apparently, their investors do, as well) that by promoting this excellent free application, they will build a strong user-base. By doing so, they will be able to look at putting out a Pro (paid) version of their software eventually… and maybe even developing new things down the road.

I recorded a video when I was in the YouTube booth, but unfortunately it wasn’t designed for short people like me.

It was kinda neat to meet people who work behind the scenes at YouTube. They were all around me in the Google booth (in which this YouTube booth was sitting). I got to ask them a few questions, and they had the opportunity to ask me a few questions, too.

I’ve been recording videos and uploading them to the Internet for the longest time, but YouTube has been the best delivery vehicle (by far). It even beats publishing through your own blog – and trumps just about anything I’ve ever seen inside the podcast sphere.

Did you know that YouTube is the #2 search engine right now? Video isn’t going away, and the sooner you realize that – the better off you’re going to be. Even if you don’t like creating videos, you know where to go to watch them.

My dad says he wants to start putting videos on YouTube. I think that’s a great idea (personally), but for some reason – even with simple software installed – he hasn’t started. Maybe this clip will inspire him to do something?
