Fable 3 Review

Greg is a Fable fan – having played Fable I and Fable II. When I needed to find someone in my community who might be able to help review the new Fable III for Xbox 360, he was up for the task.

Instead of just looking at the game and offering a simple review, Greg played the ENTIRE game of Fable III before recording this video review. Unbelievable. That’s going above and beyond the Call of Duty. Er, I mean Fable III.

As stated in the video, Greg asserts:

I received the game less than 24 hours ago so I sped though this game at 100 mph. Keep that in mind as we go through this.

The game took me about 12 hours to get through – but don’t worry. As you’d expect with Fable, there are a ton of side missions to keep you busy for many more hours.

Fable 3 picks up at about 50 years where we left off from Fable 2. In fact, our character this time is the youngest of 2 sons of the Hero from Fable 2. Your older brother is currently King – and not doing a very good job at either. Like the other Fable stories, you need to save Albion from tyranny, only this time it’s from your own family.

So, your stent as a wealthy prince is short-lived as you escape from the castle to travel around Albion seeking help from its inhabitants to eventually overthrow your brother the King.

What’s nice is that, unlike other the Fables, once you’ve done this, you actually get to play as King and make decisions like a King. For a little while, at least. Once you’re King, you find out there there is a far greater threat – and so your decisions as King will determine that outcome.

This is cool because you basically get two story lines: defeat your tyrant brother to claim the throne; and rule for a short time, hoping your decisions make for a favorable outcome.

As I’m sure you’ve already guessed, that’s the story in a nutshell. Now, let’s dive into the specifics.

To be perfectly honest, I was greatly underwhelmed by this game. Because of the many differences between Fable 1 and Fable 2, I had expected more from Fable 3.

The plot isn’t the only thing that picks up from Fable 2 – gameplay, itself, is nearly identical.

The first thing you’ll notice is that you have the dog again – and, like in Fable 2, he’s pretty useless. He’ll help you find treasure and act as early enemy detection and… that’s about it. Disappointing!

Fighting is, once again, repetitive and limited to button mashing the same combo that will result in a different move, but you have no choice in that move.

It also seemed to me that there was a lot fewer weapons in this version. Again, keep in mind that I’ve only had limited time on the game, so they may be out there. Also, there is no customizing the weapons with jewels to add abilities. The weapons come with the upgrades – but you need to perform tasks to unlock them. LAME! One of them was that I needed to kill “150 ugly creatures.” What determines an “ugly” creature? That’s a lot – considering you’re throwing them at me 4 to 5 at a time. I’d much rather buy the upgrades.

You still have spells, but they are in the form of gauntlets to wear. This means you only have 2 spells at a time. You can switch between them, but you have to go back to your sanctuary base to swap them. Luckily, you can do this in the middle of a battle. One cool addition is that you can combine the spells for some pretty cool fighting. My favorite is mixing Fireball with Vortex. And, like fighting, spells are repetitive button mashing.

Let’s move on to armor and outfits. Again, they’re in very limited supply – and you get no bonuses for the outfit. They don’t improve people’s attitude toward you. They offer no defensive bonus or attack bonus. I could have played the entire game in the character’s pajamas and done just as well. They offer a bunch of customization to the outfits, but what’s the point?

Let’s talk about the interaction with the townsfolk, too. Remember, in Fable 2, that you had several choices depending on who you were talking to and how not everyone reacted the same way to a response? Well, that’s gone. Kinda. In this version, you get two choices and it doesn’t matter who they are. I went the entire game with “dance and belch” as my first choice of interaction, regardless of sex. Everyone loved dancing. Kinda took the fun out of it. Also, they took out the option to skip the cutscenes. I probably could have done the game in half the time if I could have skipped the cutscenes.

Like in Fable 2, you get to buy houses and businesses. With houses, though, you have to pay for their upkeep regularly. Their condition directly reflects how much rent you receive. Owning property is the best way to raise income (besides doing a job). Jobs are slightly new. You can choose to be a blacksmith, pie maker, or a lute musician. All stupid, but great for raising that last $1,000 you need to buy a house.

The fast travel is much improved, allowing you to even get closer to a section of the city. From this menu, you can also mange all your property and purchase some more. This is great, as you don’t have to run around from building to building to make changes.
The lack of difficulty settings is a disappointment. I went through the entire game without dying – not even once. I used the same weapon through the last 75% of the game and I only used 8 health potions and it wasn’t even the final battle. Gameplay is super simple.

So, in conclusion, Fable 3 (in my book) is a dud. Frankly, I may not even go back and play the rest of the missions. If you’re a gamer who is really into Sim games, you may love it. If you’re into RPG challenges that rock your brain, you’re not going to find it in Fable 3. Sorry.

Guess What I Have? Halo Reach!

Halo Reach

Your eyes are not deceiving you! I have a review copy of Halo:Reach in my possession, and I cannot wait to put it to the test this weekend. I know – you’re exceedingly jealous right now. You’ve been telling me all day on Twitter and Facebook. I’ve even gotten a couple of “OMG I HATE YOU! NO FAIR!” emails. It’s okay, though, I can handle the heat. At the end of the day, I get to sit down with my Xbox 360 and enjoy the goodness inside of this box.

In Halo: Reach players will be experiencing the moments leading up to the Halo legend. This version is the story of Noble team. They’re a squad of Spartan soldiers. The story tells of their final stand on the planet Reach – humanity’s last line of defense between the Covenant and Earth. This story is said to be much darker than previous releases. It has grittier visuals set in jaw-dropping environments. The characters, enemies and environments are rendered in what is said to be “amazing” detail. We’ll see about that the first time I sit down to play.

Are you one of the masses who are anxiously awaiting the release of this game? What are your thoughts on the reviews and write-ups you’ve seen so far? Keep your eyes open for my review coming soon!

Is Xbox Hot or Cold?

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed

Amez writes: “I decided to send in another Top 5 Tips list, to keeping your Xbox 360 Running! Many people don’t understand why they are going through so many, or why they get the 3 flashing red lights. There are some tips below to ensure it stays running.”

  • Keep the Xbox 360 off carpet! The xbox 360 is drooling to suck in dust, and having it on the carpet just helps it out! Clear a space on a shelf, and away from where it can suck up dust.
  • Keep the Xbox 360 in its own clear space! Having it in a cabinet or against a wall can build up heat, causing itself to overheat! It can be on a shelf, just not too close to anything against it.
  • Intercooler: In my opinion, it can wreck the 360 itself. The Xbox 360 already has two fans at the back, putting the Intercooler on is just conflicting with the fans at the back. If it is getting too hot, I suggest getting a room fan and turning it to blow a bit of air onto it.
  • Be Careful! When inserting a game, or moving the 360, do it gently! I see allot of people not handling it properly, and wondering why it stopped working correctly. When handling the 360, remember to be gentle!
  • The Nicko Cooling Station: I suggest this over the Intercooler any day. It goes on the bottom, rather then the back, adding more cooling to the bottom to get all that heat to come out.

How to Buy Xbox 360 Gifts for Geeks

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed

One of our community members loves playing Xbox so much, he sent me in a top TEN list of tips… instead of the normal top five. Sit back and watch as we check out these great tips for buying Xbox gifts for Geeks!

  • Xbox 360 Hd dvd player This one is listed last because its very expensive.
  • Xbox 360 Wireless adapter This is great if they don’t want to string an Ethernet cord across the room to their 360. Also, it pairs great with the next idea.
  • Xbox live starter pack This is great with the wireless adapter because it can get them started to half of the 360 experience. It also comes with a head set so they can talk on live.
  • Microsoft points These are great because you could buy classic arcade tittles like asteroids. You can also use them to buy downlodable content for great titles.
  • Wireless controllers These have always been great, but now they are even better. They come in Pink, Black, Blue, and the classic White. Plus, going wireless is good so they can sit on their couch instead of sitting 5 feet from the tv. You can also get them bundled with chargers.
  • Call of Duty 4 This is by far an amazing game. It has stunning visuals, great game play, and the live version is awesome.
  • Assassins Creed This is a great game. It’s a fun game, and a really cool story.
  • Bioshock People are saying this is the best shooter so far this year, and I have to agree. The reason it did not make a better score is that it has no multiplayer.
  • The Orange Box This is by far one of the best games ever. It comes bundled with my favorite shooter ever, Half Life 2.
  • Mass Effect This is a great role playing game that has great shooting elements. It may appear to be a shooter, but remember it is a role playing game. If someone dosent like role playing games don’t get them this. It has the greatest story ever, and the voice acting is amazing.

Xbox Marketplace: Mutant Storm Empire Review

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed

Many people ask me on a daily basis if I am a gamer. No, I’m really not. I’m more of a casual gamer. When Xbox 360 came out with Mutant Storm, I was impressed. Then… I got to try out the sequel. I admit it. I’m hopelessly addicted.

Mutant Storm Empire is literally a blast to play. If you’re familiar with the game called Geometry Wars, you’ll find the game play is very similar, as far as the controller. The buttons do the same things, and the directions to move are the same.

A summary of the game from Sony:

There’s this evil emperor, see, and … well, he’s evil. Now someone has decided to put a stop to the whole evilness thing, and that someone is you. It’s the right thing to do! Besides, in Mutant Storm Empire, it’ll be fun. Battle through line after line of the emperor’s minion horde, destroying absolutely everything you can! Blast through bunches of robots, crush colonies of aquatic monsters, smash swarms of UFOs, and demolish devastating bosses. It’s a continuous adventure through four immense, strikingly vibrant worlds, and you can fight alone or join forces with a friend in two-player cooperative mode. Enjoy the frenzy!

There you have it. If you buy only one game from 360 Live this year, it should definitely be this one.

I’m interested in hearing about YOUR favorite game. What is it, and which system do you play it on? What do you love about it? Why is it so addictive? Leave me a follow-up comment, or send an email to me at [email protected]

Halo 3 Slayer

Chris | Live Tech Support | Video Help | Add to iTunes

http://live.pirillo.com/ – You’ve seen me review the new Halo 3, and play the Oddballs custom game. This time, GamerAndy and I are going to try Slayer.

I received an advance copy of Halo 3 hanks to my friends at Edelman PR. I’ve already done a review on the game, and played Oddball .

I asked Andy if he’s tried Forge yet… he indicated he hadn’t, but thought it would be boring. Dude! Hardly! How cool is it when you blow things up, record it, play it back and freeze frame it… then take screenshots!?

Again in Slayer… just like with everything else on Halo 3 thus far… the graphics are just WOW. I keep using the word “astounding” over and over, but it truly is.

At least with Slayer, I died in vibrant color and detail! Who says I can’t be a true gamer? For those of you asking if you should get a PS3 or an XBOX360… just watch these videos, and decide for yourself.

http://live.pirillo.com/ – Watch as I play the custom game “Oddball” on my pre-release copy of Halo 3. I’m playing with my friend GamerAndy, and I got one point!

I received an advance copy of Halo 3 hanks to my friends at Edelman PR. I’ve already done a review on the game. Now I’m going to try out a couple of the custom games.

The active Camo is amazing. I continue to be astounded by the sheer beauty of the graphics in this game. Absolutely… amazing.

Oh yeah… and I didn’t lose!

Halo 3 Sneak Peek

Chris | Live Tech Support | Video Help | Add to iTunes

http://live.pirillo.com/ – I was lucky to receive an advance copy of the new Halo 3 that is due out in a few days. I played it last night with some friends to test it out, and decided to do a short review today. In a nutshell, if you’re waiting for Halo 3, you won’t be disappointed.

Thanks to my friends at Edelman PR, I was able to get my hands on a perfectly legal advance copy of Halo 3. I know many people are anxious for the release, and will be standing in line for this game.

First, let me warn you that your disc may have a slight scratch on it like mine does. The little plastic thingie in the case doesn’t hold the disc in there very well. However, I am able to play the game with no problems at all.

Now… on to the good stuff! The graphics in this game are absolutely astounding!!! The detailing is amazing, and the “trash talk” on both sides is excellent. I have a feeling this will be the most popular Halo version yet.

I know, some of you want my gamertag. It’s Lockergnome. However… don’t waste your time. I’m more of a Tetris kind of guy. I enjoy playing this, I’m having a great time with the demo… but you can see me getting my rear kicked while I’m at it.

UPDATE ON SCRATCHED HALO 3 DISCS If you purchased a copy of Halo 3 and your disc is scratched, Microsoft will send you a free replacement .
