Today is National Bike to Work Day, capping off an entire week of pushing Amercians to be healthier while saving the environment from harmful gasses AND helping cut down on fuel consumption. Sounds like a pretty tall order, doesn’t it? It’s not such a stretch, though. Riding a bike for only thirty minutes per day can have a large impact on your health: the aerobic exercise strengthens the heart muscle at the same time that it helps keep weight, cholesterol, and blood pressure at healthy levels. It may also reduce arterial inflammation, which increases heart-attack risk, and slow the progression of heart disease.

You already know that riding a bike instead of driving a car (or taking public transportation) will save on your gasoline cost and reduce your carbon footprint. Did you know, though, that biking could keep your heart healthy? It can also help keep arthritis at bay. A recent study suggests that women with stronger thigh muscles are less likely to develop arthritis in their knees.

Leave the car in the garage today. Dust off your bike, throw on your tennis shoes, and enjoy the scenery on the way to the office on this beautiful day.

Yes it’s true… I have managed to turn a personality disorder into a career. I don’t have a ‘job’ in the traditional sense. I just put myself out there, and they come to me. Are you looking for a job? Did you ever consider your next job may come to you? It’s a possibility, I’ve seen it happen many times. I received an interesting email recently, asking about the future of job hunting.

I’m working on an article about recruiting online – and there are a few companies that are actually posting job leads via YouTube. I’m wondering, as an expert on IT, if you think this is a viable way to job hunt. A lot of companies are slowly starting to embrace social networking tools like LinkedIn and Facebook – and now Youtube – to look for job candidates. Is the way people normally looked for jobs dead?

I would say yes, and no. I don’t think the resume and cover letter are dead. I don’t think making contact with people who are in a position to give you a job has been thrown out the window. I do believe that your next job could come to you, based on the things that you do.

One of the reasons I am so careful about what I do online is that I know people could be looking at me. I’ve landed several opportunities simply because I’ve uploaded videos to YouTube. I landed the gig with CNN because of the videos, and the live streaming.

The next time you go to upload the video, ask yourself if this video is something that a future potential employer will see and love… or hate. Could this video get you a job? Could it keep you from getting one? Don’t think that won’t happen. Trust me, it can and will. Many hundreds of employers (maybe thousands) search candidate’s names online, trying to see just what kind of person you may be.

Did you know the #2 search engine on the planet is YouTube? It’s food for thought.

When is the last time you updated your resume? For me, it’s been well over ten years. Some companies, after you give them your resume, may even Google you. So, be careful of what you put out there online. What method do you use to update and give out your resume? If you’re padding your resume with things that aren’t exactly true, expect to get caught on it. Be honest when you build your resume. If you don’t know where to start, let me tell you this. Don’t download a template, or edit it in a word processing program. My recommendation at this point in time is to use something like Emurse.

Create, share and store your resume online for free. Creating a quality resume is a difficult task. Keeping track of your various versions is a hassle. Once you have it all figured out, there’s the worry of formats, hard drive failure and viruses.

What impresses me the most is that a resume built here can be saved, printed out, or subscribed to using an RSS reader. There’s also a “contact” tab, to help you keep track of yourself and others. Actually, I’m so impressed with Emurse, that if I ever have a need to hire someone again I’ll likely insist that they use this site to apply. This is just literally that good… the best I’ve ever seen.

A 14 year old community member sent in this top five list. He’ll go a long way, with a determination and work ethic this strong already. Hopefully, his tips will help the rest of you who are looking for ways to make money, but are too young still for “traditional” jobs.

Use your talents. Everyone has something they’re good at, and those skills/talents can be used in a productive way. If you’re an excellent guitarist, what better way than to look around for gigs at a local bar? If you’re an excellent writer, why not look at sending in some articles to a local newspaper for cash? There’s always something productive you can do with your talents.
Don’t shy away from hard work. Raking someone’s leaves isn’t fun, especially when it’s cold outside and you feel like you’re barely making a dent. Don’t give up. Get your hands dirty, it builds character. Sure, spending a day indoors may be a bit more comfortable, but you can’t hope to make money if you’re not willing to work.
Volunteer for everything. Teenagers have plenty of free time, I can attest to that. Umpire at the Little League Field, wash your neighbor’s car. If there’s a job to be done, there’s money to be made. Chances are, you have plenty of time to do it. Like I said previously, don’t shy away from anything. If you’re serious about making money, then get out there and do any odd job you can possibly find. Adults are more than willing to pay you.
Ask around. It can be casual. If you see an adult you know at the grocery store, very casually ask if there are any leaves they need raked or snow they need shoveled. Ask them if they need their dogs walked, or their house watched while they’re on vacation. It can’t hurt to ask, and eventually, adults are going to realize that you’re a good kid and you’re willing to do work. Eventually, they’ll have a job they need done and they’ll think of you.
Get the word out. This is easily the most important tip. If no one knows that that you’re willing to work and available for tasks, no one’s going to ask. It can be as simple as telling your mother to put in a good word for you at the den mother’s meeting by telling the other mothers that you’re willing to rake leaves or shovel snow. It can be as simple as posting an ad on the bulletin board at town hall. Heck, it can be as simple as going door-to-door in your neighborhood and letting your neighbors know that you’re available.

There’s nothing wrong with being busy, is there? Nothing will kill a blogger’s blogging schedule quicker than moving into a new home and getting married. Seriously.

I wanted to whittle my inbox down to ZERO this weekend, but wound up taking care of personal tasks instead: hitting Home Depot for primer and paint, running to Target for dog food and Kleenex, driving to E.E. Robbins for a new wedding band (since the tungsten didn’t work out, which I hope to blog about soon), etc.

Then, at home, the adventures continued: hanging a few random pictures and masks on the walls, washing the dishes that had been piling up on the countertop for darn near seven days, preparing for another disappointing visit from Office Depot (seriously, they’re at the top of my shit list), scribbling down names and numbers to coordinate with and/or contact throughout the week, etc.

When most people type “etc.,” they don’t really mean it. My “etc.” is really a list of a thousand more ceteras. Which reminds me: I have to sell that old Peter Cetera cassette tape on eBay when I get the chance.

How the deuce do people find time to blog these days!? Seems to me an imbalance between the amount of people who are producing (more) and the amount of people consuming (less). I can’t even remember the last time I hit my newsreader. I’ve been too damn busy with my own life to get caught up with everybody else’s.

Worse yet, I’ve now bored YOU to tears with the laundry list of items that I’ve had to deal with in recent days – WHICH REMINDS ME TO FINISH THE DAMN LAUNDRY.

[I actually wrote this on Sunday night. Didn't get posted until now. Go figure.]

Lockergnome (and Gnomedex, vicariously) is looking for an intern / assistant to help us with various and sundry tasks related to the operation of our activities. We’re looking for qualified individuals immediately, and only Seattle-area “locals” need apply.

Looking for someone who can…

Begin and complete most tasks from home
Remain completely self-motivated
Keep an open schedule over the coming months
Handle basic computer and Internet-centric tasks
Help us with our organizational efforts
Drive “around town” on errands if need be
Be online while working (via instant messenger)
Take direction and run with a project
Manage time effectively in an unstructured environment
Form a complete, grammatically-adequate sentence
Retain extreme attention to detail and task tracking
