I received an interesting email the other day, from a subscriber who goes to University in Australia. I’m going to copy his email here for you all, and then do my best to answer his very though-provoking questions.

Even though it has all been said many times and in many places, it will never be enough until every computer user knows exactly how to properly care for their computer… inside and out. One of my regular community members who goes by the handle of Night sent in the following list. These are ten excellent ways to take good care of your computer.
ComputerNerd called in to ask what IM client I used when I “used to use Windows”. I had to remind him I haven’t switched away from anything. I still use Windows every day. In short, I use Miranda on Windows. Miranda IM is an open-source multi protocol instant messenger client for Microsoft Windows. It’s smaller, faster, easier! My first IM client was Trillian, but I got tired of it after awhile, because I felt it was running too slow. Miranda is fast on Windows, let me tell you. I really love this program. It’s sleek. It’s configurable.
I had a caller the other night on the 888-PIRILLO line who was asking where he can find drivers for old Windows hardware. His machines are, of course, home-built.. making this even more challenging.
Some chatters are near tears, because Ponzi is installing Vista on her new MacBook Air. She wants to dual boot, and she’s determined to use Vista. She is so used to working with Outlook, she doesn’t want to give it up. That is her main reason for dual booting, and running Windows on her new MacBook Air.
What’s the proper way to entirely uninstall and remove a program from your Windows computer? Chip called in from the chat room, to ask what my favorite uninstaller program is for Windows. Let’s take some time, and walk you through exactly how.
foxtrot_MGS wrote to me, and said that after watching all the videos I’ve done about Macs, he’s been considering making the switch. However, he states: “I’ve always used windows, and so I have some feelings about switching to a Mac”. Here are his thoughts. Watch the full video for my answers.
One of our community members works in the field of window tinting. He writes: “The window tinting industry is growing rapidly. When people talk about tinting, the first thing comes to their mind is cars. However, this list is full of tips for tinting your house.”
The last time you used a Virtual Machine for anything, how frustrated did you get over how slow everything is? Did it make you curse, or want to give up? Well, here are some tips from a reader to help you speed up the state of your VM, and make you a much happier Geek.
I find that my computing experience is greatly enhanced by knowing a few really good keyboard shortcuts. I think everyone should know a lot of these basic commands, as it speeds up your work, and makes life just that much easier when you don’t have to reach for the mouse, and can keep your hands on the keyboard. They may seem simple, almost basic computer knowledge, but I’m always surprised how overlooked some of these simple gems are. Between these keyboard shortcuts and a program called “Lauchy” (a command-line application launcher, much like Quicksilver for OSX) which I also suggest, I find I’m far quicker to get from point A to point B, and rarely have to use the start menu, or have icons on my desktop.
Here are five things you need to know before you decide to try a Linux Distro. Don’t mistakenly assume it will be an easy switch for you. Any time you change to a completely new Operating System, there will be a trial period, as you get used to it.
I received a question today regarding software installation on a new machine, or after a full reformat. LifeJustIs is wondering whether you should download and install Windows updates first, or install an Anti-Virus first?
Which Operating System is better? Is it OS X? What about a Linux distro? Wait… don’t forget BSD or Windows. The answer is, there IS no right answer. Yet, people still argue about it, and ask me every day which is best.
