How do You Run Windows Programs without Windows?

If any of you subscribe to CPU magazine, you know I’m a monthly columnist. I’ve become a huge user advocate. I even recently suggested that the hardware and software industry adopt an operating system that isn’t Windows… in order to benefit Windows. More competition on the desktop is good for everyone. I got an email here about something I know I have heard about in the past. I just haven’t had an occasion to tell you all about it. Sam pointed me towards ReactOS.

If I don’t say this right, people will be upset. I know that some will chastise me for even doing this video. What I’m referring to is a situation that you may have either found yourself in… or will in the future. I’m talking about switching your primary operating system from Windows to Mac OS X. You could say it was curiosity that won me over. I was a life-long Windows user, like many of you are. However, I felt as though I was ready to expand my horizons and learn more. I started playing in Linux and OS X. I love to learn new things. Heck, I’m excited to try out the newest version of Windows when it’s ready to beta test.

My hard drives, much like yours, are full of files collected over the years. I’ve used every operating system you can think of. Sometimes, I create files that are only available for one operating system or another. This, of course, creates headaches at times. How do I deal with this? OS X is my primary operating system now, and there are thankfully several free programs available for a Mac that make accessing and using my Windows files much easier.

So what are you looking forward to most… and what suggestions can you offer to Zach, so he can take advantage of some of these features today?

Is the Windows UI Important?

It’s kind of funny. The 45 minute long video I recorded ranting about Windows Vista still gets a ton of traffic to this day. Ponzi isn’t too happy with Vista. It makes her feel stupid, according to her. She’s run into quite a few walls, even with SP1. She’s very frustrated, to say the least. She likes the way it looks, though. I’m also kind of “famous” for my Windows Vista feedback post.

Why I’m Switching Back to Windows XP from Mac OS X

The experiment is officially over. Today I am going back to Windows XP. I really found myself needing to use Windows software. You don’t realize how dependent you get on utilities like Notepad and Microsoft Paint until you no longer have them. I pulled out all my old software to go through it, and see what is compatible… where.

Is Windows Vista Ultimate Better than Home Premium?

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed

What’s the difference between Windows Vista Ultimate, and Windows Vista Home Premium? One is black… and the other is green. Everyone knows if something is “premium”, it’s good… but if it’s “ultimate”… it’s better! You never hear that premium is better than ultimate. Are you nuts? Everybody knows that software that comes in black is much better than software that comes in green. That’s been scientifically proven by people at MIT who weren’t scientists, but they did wear the little white lab coats!

The Microsoft Windows Vista Rant Continues

Recently, I posted a video about Windows and Microsoft, specifically Vista. My main point is that Microsoft needs to really listen to the Community, and pay attention to our wants and needs. I’ve received many comments, both in favor and against what I said that night. This one is so well thought out, I had to post it to share. Some excellent points here, so please read.

I have been loving Mac OS X Leopard since I began using it. I know a lot of people were upset when I switched to Mac. I don’t know what it is, but the Mac just gives you an incredible feeling of warmth. You bond emotionally with my machine! It just works so wonderfully. I’ve never had issues, not like I did with Windows. BSODs are a thing of the…

Windows Vista’s Rants

Add to iTunes | Add to YouTube | Add to Google | RSS Feed

My rants on Windows Vista have been legendary. The only reason I’ve been so vocal about it, is because I care. If I didn’t, I’d just leave it be. As someone who felt he was slighted by Windows Vista, I couldn’t stay quiet. Microsoft has lost the community. I am trying to help, in whatever way I can. For me to come out and state what I believe to be the truth caused me to be pushed away by other Windows enthusiasts. I took my lumps for well over a year, until I stated that the community as a whole should stand up and tell Microsoft what they can do to get it right.
