An acquaintance of mine, Deb, made an interesting assertion at the [re]Think Hawaii conference last week. She suggested that Twitter is where conversations are happening. I suggested that that isn’t quite accurate.

As you very well know, I am on Twitter. However, I don’t use it to have conversations as some of you do. To me, trying to use Twitter to have a conversation is similar to using a screwdriver to pound a nail into a steel door. Sure, it’s a tool… but are you using that tool the way it was designed?

Twitter wasn’t designed for conversations. It’s difficult to track them. To go one level deep into an interaction is an exercise in futility. Have you ever gone to a person’s page, and seen ten tweets in a row, complete with several @msgs? It’s impossible to follow.

I say that if you want to have an actual conversation, I feel you should be doing so somewhere like FriendFeed or Facebook. That is easy to track. Twitter wasn’t built with threading in mind. It’s a great tool, don’t get me wrong. It’s just not a place to have conversations. Don’t use it in ways it was never meant to be used.

Sooner or later, I’m sure that Twitter will figure out a way to make it easy to follow threads and conversations. A one-to-one is done easily via a direct message… such as with IM or email.

I’m going on record as a person in the world of social media, and state outright that Twitter isn’t a good way to have a conversation. If someone @myself, I tend to follow up via email or DM if I want to reply to or address whatever it was. However, it’s very seldom that I try to interact with someone on a one-on-one basis on Twitter. I usually only share information that I think would be funny/interesting/informative to my community.

Yes, I’m on Twitter. I’ve been there for a few years now, and have a bajillion or so followers. I think I’ve now tweeted out around 10,000 different things. Not too shabby, eh? I’m assuming you’re on Twitter, since it seems most everyone is. But do you know who else in your city or area is also running around on Twitter? Do you know how to find them and see what they’re talking about?

If you answered no, then you need to check out Geo Chirp. GeoChirp helps you search for people Twittering for specific things in a specific area. Let’s say you want to find people in your location who are tweeting about the iPhone. Select the area in your map on Geo Chirp, and set the radius to 1-50 miles. Enter keyword iPhone and boom! You have a list of all of the people in your area who are talking about the iPhone on Twitter. This definitely makes GeoChirp the most powerful tool to connect with people of similar interests in a particular geography.

You don’t only have to search your own area, of course. What if you were attending a conference in Texas in the near future, but you live in Oregon? You might want to use Geo Chirp to find out what people in the conference area are talking about, and who the movers and shakers are in that location. It seems that everyone has a Twitter account these days. If you have one, you may want to pay attention to this resource – especially if you have your own web site. Chances are, you’d like to get feedback from the people who visit your site. However, that can be quite difficult at times. The same team who created our new contest page created this new application that can help you get feedback for your site via Twitter!

Paste the code for the widget into your website. As people visit, they can leave feedback through the widget that is automatically tweet’d out on their own Twitter accounts. Word on the street is that Best Buy is now requiring applicants to not only be on Twitter – but to have at least 250 followers, as well. When I read this, my mouth hit the floor. In effect, the company thinks that hiring people with a large Twitter following will garner more business for them. How ludicrous is this? It’s not up to an employee to send out tweets and bring in business to a company like Best Buy. For one thing, what if a person chooses not to have that many followers? Not everyone is on Twitter to see if they can win the race for having the most followers. Some people actually use it only to follow interesting people and entities themselves, not caring whether others follow them back. Some of those same people never even update their own timeline. They choose, instead, to simply use Twitter to read the latest news, and keep up with what’s hot in the marketplace.

I cannot begin to understand why a company would – or can even be allowed to – require something like this. If a person’s job were going to be something along the lines of “Social Media Director”, I might be able to see the need for the applicant to already have some sort of following, establishing them as “social media savvy”. Beyond that – I’m just lost.

During my travels around our community today, I came across an interesting post on Lockergnome. The author discusses how he signed up for Twitter in order to attempt to figure out the hype. At one point, he states that:

By composing short, 140-character messages, you can share with the world that you are standing in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles, eating a tuna sandwich, or watching your dog chase its tail. If compulsively posting such digital drivel is not enough of an incentive to get out of bed in the morning—which is, of course, another event you’ll want to share with others – you can also follow the mundane activities of other peoples’ uneventful lives – including neuron-numbing celebritwits. At no time in the history of interpersonal communication has the phrase “Get a life” been more appropriate.

After a two-month immersion on Twitter, he still doesn’t quite “get it”, according to his closing paragraph. He wants to understand why “anybody would feel compelled to share the excruciatingly tedious minutia of their lives… (and) why anybody would want to read it”. This is our chance to show Mr. Modem what it is that he is missing.

Sure, there are plenty of mind-numbing tweets posted every nth of a second, all day, every day. However, there are also an equal number of informative and important things spread across Twitter, as well. Each day, Twitter is becoming more of a news outlet than the actual newspapers and stations. Word about a tragedy, accident, death or even a missing child will spread all across Twitter (and become a trending topic) much quicker than the same stories could possibly be posted to a place such as CNN or MSNBC.

Twitter is also used in very unconventional ways to spread a message, and raise awareness for a good cause. During last year’s Gnomedex conference, the attendees used their reach on Twitter to raise over $3700.00 to help send a young Cambodian woman to college. Right now, we have a good friend of our community, Drew, who is using Twitter to blame his cancer for things, thus raising awareness and money for the Livestrong Foundation.

In my eyes, Twitter is a mixed bag. It is fun, definitely. You can post short, silly little messages on a whim if you choose. Five seconds later, you can turn around and post about a life-changing event – one that may impact many thousands of people. It’s not what Twitter “is” or “is not” – it’s what you choose to do with it that makes the difference.

My challenge to all of you is this: if you are on Twitter (or have been in the past) – how do you answer Mr. Modem’s question? Leave a follow-up comment here, and let us know if you feel that you are Twittering – or Frittering – your time away.

Chess is a game of strategy, which is a reason you’ll never find me playing it. I’m more of a Checkers guy – and I suck at that, too. If you’re into Chess – and you use Twitter – you’ll love this new service I’ve found! ChessTweets is the newest type of correspondence chess. ChessTweets uses the Twitter API to send your chess moves remotely, allowing you to play against someone who is located a million miles away! You can use any of the Twitter clients to play, such as TweetDeck and Twhirl.

The ChessTweets Experiment wants to try to expand on the ideas intended by Kasparov back in 1999. ChessTweets has created the world’s first automated and objective machine. Can something like this learn to compete with the best players in the world? The Experiment thinks so, and is out to prove it.

ChessTweets asks the community to give their input on moves. They will then examine each and every person’s relative skill, and apply a formulated weight to every suggested move. This way, everyone plays an equal and important role in the game! A novice’s opinion will be just as vital as that of someone of expert level.

This is actually an excellent – and fun – idea. It’s going to be very interesting over coming months to watch this project grow, and to see what level the “mind” can reach.

TweetDeck is now on the iPhone. That’s right – the reversed-palate, desktop-hogging application has now gone mobile, releasing its first iPhone version today. The TweetDeck community fervently downloaded it and spread the exciting news that they have been waiting for since the idea was mentioned last summer. Some of you might have tried the desktop app in the past and moved on for whatever reason. You might want to take a second look and see what both the desktop and the iPhone applications now have to offer.

As you may know, TweetDeck is known for its multiple-column layout. Previously, the desktop application would only allow 10 columns; the desktop version released today has no limit.

Wait, it gets better: you can retain your groups through the new account sync. \ This is, by far, the best feature of the new TweetDeck. Your tweets, settings, and groups are saved – no matter where you are using the application – on your phone, on your desktop at work, or your computer at home.

The second best feature of Tweetdeck is multiple accounts. Since nearly the beginning, users have pleaded for the ability to use the robust application with multiple Twitter accounts (common for marketers, bloggers, and other full-time tweeters). Even though the iPhone app doesn’t include EVERY feature of the desktop application, you have the ability to set up and use multiple accounts just like the desktop. The best part about it is that if you set up your second Twitter account on your iPhone, you’ll sync your settings and be able to use it on your desktop, too.

When you are in the initial setup, you may crash if you try to create or sign in to your TweetDeck account. Click on “Skip This” as you can fix it later once you are running. All you need to do is go into Settings and set it up. This will probably be fixed with their first update – it’s a pretty big bug.
While the desktop application can have multiple columns, the iPhone app gets sluggish with too many. I encountered a crash loop when trying to use 21 columns. My recommendation is that you keep your phone columns at 10 or less. If you use more, you may wish to purge old or read tweets to prevent crashing.
The desktop application has Facebook status integrated, but the iPhone app doesn’t. This is a bit of a downer; hopefully, they will consider adding this for their users in the next update.

All in all, the TweetDeck app – or should we call it a “service” now, with the ability to create TweetDeck sync accounts – is evolving well. It’s far from the clunky original version – and should get better as Adobe’s AIR platform matures. You can view a full list of features for both public beta applications and download them for free from the TweetDeck website.

How to Find Popular Links on Twitter

Twitter may not be for you, and that’s ok. It’s for me, that’s for sure! Even if you don’t want to “be” on Twitter, you can still take advantage of the information that’s flying around. You can surface extremely relevant information related to links that are shared. All you have to do is check out Topsy!

Topsy is a free search engine powered by tweets. Simply enter in a keyword that you are interested in tracking, and Topsy will return a list of results. You’ll notice that those results will all be tweets that include the keyword, and related links that were sent. It will also give you a list of people who tweeted out that word and link, in the order of who did so the most.

Topsy is an excellent way to keep yourself up-to-date as to what is hot right now, and who is talking about it. It’s also easy to use Topsy to watch trends, and keep your eye on things that are important to you.

Yes, that really was a tweet you saw on my screen. Each of the tweets had one thing in common – my last name. I had fun watching them assemble themselves on my screen.

Using Visible Tweets, you can choose a keyword to follow on Twitter. The service then locates tweets that have that keyword in them somewhere, and assembles them on your screen.

Visible Tweets is a visualization of Twitter messages designed to be shown in public places. You can choose to follow them on Twitter to keep up with the latest developments. You can also send them an @tweet, letting them know of ideas of feedback that you may have for them.

This would make a great screensaver, by the way. Sadly, it’s not one. Hint, hint!! It’s interesting watching the letters pop in, and see the animations ebb and flow.

I had the great fortune of sitting down with the guy from Twitter Road Trip recently. We had a great time, as you’ll see in the video, and covered many interesting topics. Even Wicket and Pixie got into things with us!

We discussed the live stream, and how everything came about. I kind of stumbled into that, just like I’ve always done with everything in my life online. We also talked about my Gnomedex conference, which has been around for nine years now. That’s longer than many people have been online – and longer than the term “social networking” has been around!

We then started talking about CNN. They approached me about doing something with them last year, after seeing the live stream. I do a three minute technology review each Thursday evening, and am now the Tech Consultant for them, as well!

You know we had to discuss Twitter, and the whole Ashton Kutcher trying to get to one million. He didn’t send as much flow as I thought he would have with as many followers as he has. Ashton linked to a video of mine, and I was shocked to find out that I didn’t get much flowback from that. I see people who have a large amount of followers, but have no flow like that. They don’t get clicks, or re-tweets. But with our community, they’re just crazy about sending things out, clicking on links I share, and re-tweeting things they find impressive or interesting.

This goes to show that it’s not about the number of followers you have. It has to do with your gravitational pull, so to speak. It has to do with how much weight you pull. I work very hard to make sure that what I say has relevance (for the most part), and that I post something that is valid and interesting that will add value to my Twitter stream… and to my follower’s streams, as well.

Twitter has opened up a whole new world of communication and social media. Yes, it’s true that many people use it simply to say silly things like “I just ate a grilled cheese!”. But there are literally thousands of people out there who are posting interesting, thought-provoking content. Make sure you aren’t missing out. Be aware of who is on Twitter, and what they’re posting. Subscribe to people who may be interesting to you. It’s all about how you are interacting.

Personally, I think that the number of followers and following should be removed. Privately, it would be interesting to have those stats. But I think the public elimination of it needs to happen. It’s a bad metric. Twitter isn’t about how many people are following you. It encourages marketers and spammers, for one thing. And for another… losing those stats in a public way would put more value on the actual content, instead of the numbers themselves.

Towards the end, we left conversation about Twitter behind, and circled back to talking about me. Oh the joys! He asked what I like doing when I’m off-camera, and the answer is hard to put into words. My interests change and involve constantly. It keeps life interesting! I’m a boring guy, really. I was never into a bar scene, nor into sports or concerts. I live online! I don’t need much to keep myself happy and entertained.

Are you following me on Twitter? It’s no secret I’m very active there. Have you thought about creating your own Twitter-like environment for a target group of people? That’s easier than ever to do now. Instead of having to code your own site, just use Shout’Em to roll your own microblogging community!

Shout’Em is platform on which you can easily start co-branded microbloging social networking service. Something simple as Twitter or with more features like Pownce. It is up to you! How to Share Files on Twitter

I was surfing my Twitter feeds this morning, and happened upon someone asking how could they attach a Word document to a tweet. They were actually serious! I decided to re-tweet it, in a joking manner. However, I learned something new instead. Apparently, it’s possible to attach files to a tweet… sort of. But if the day ever comes when people literally attach Word documents to them – I’m done!

This is what you do: upload your file to FileSocial, and log in with your Twitter credentials. Your file is then shared with all of your contacts on Twitter. What makes this different than the photo-sharing sites for Twitter is the fact that you can upload things like PDFs and documents, as well.

When you upload a file, you can include a brief comment or description and a tweet will automatically appear in your Twitter account. Anyone can see, comment on and even download that file through that link.

I have a new Twitter background. It’s awesome, but I can’t take credit for it. I’m not the one who made it. Not everyone out there is a great graphic designer, or would know how to create their own background. How do you create a custom Twitter background then?

Never fear! Free Twitter Designer is here! Free Twitter Designer does exactly what the name implies – it allows you to easily create cool custom Twitter backgrounds – for free!

To create your background, choose a blank slate or one of the premade templates. You can then add shapes, text or images from your computer. It has the Twitter overlay there, so you can play with colors and see how everything will look right on your Twitter page. You can change things, such as your blend mode and style.

Nothing is saved on the site itself, so what you create is 100% yours. Once you close the browser window, your work is gone. So, keep that window open until you upload what you’ve done onto your Twitter account.

Make sure you change your page colors on Twitter itself. Changing them on Free Twitter Designer just lets you see how the colors would look with your background. You’ll still need to change them yourself once you log in to Twitter.

Once your background is created, adding it to your Twitter profile is simple. Log in to your Twitter account and click Settings, then click Design, then Select Change Background Image. Now just upload your image.
