I never thought I’d see the day when a USB device worked on both OS X and Windows to allow me to record video signals, including digital cable video signals! I can also schedule recordings, even remotely from my iPhone! There’s also the ability to chat with others, and see what other people are watching.

This week, I’m taking the Green Screen Challenge a step or two further than usual! Normally, I make a blog post, showcasing a few of my favorite entries. This time around, you can actually win a couple of very cool things!

During live calls a bit back, I received one from someone who couldn’t believe they were actually talking to me. His main question was wondering if I’d ever go back to television.

In short – yes! I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I loved the atmosphere and pace of television. And, of course, I can reach a much wider audience!

Apparently, I looked quite nerdy back then. Even though I’ve aged well, I admit to still being nerdy. I wasn’t sure what more to say to this caller, as he seemed to be a bit uhm… under the weather. He was really happy he was able to get through on the live phone, so at least we apparently made his day.

Keep your eyes and ears open for the next time we’re doing live calls. You can call in to discuss anything tech related, or even talk about current events!

Stealing it is not the way to get an HDTV. If you don’t know where to start, we have some tips sent in by DellMan94 to help you know what to look for when buying a new HDTV. HD is here to stay, that’s for sure. I know you cannot go back once you’ve used an HDTV.

See it for yourself. If you have the opportunity to walk into a showroom and watch the television in action – and play with the remote – take it! The more you research by actually experiencing one, the better off you’ll be.
Buy for your needs. In other words, buy the TV that is most suited for how and where you’ll be using it. Keep in mind, if you’ll be in an environment with controlled lighting, you can get whatever you want. If you’ll have low lighting, be aware of the type of screen on the TV you purchase.
Don’t forget about the sound! Check out the speakers, and see how it sounds. You may even want to consider buying external speakers.
Use the best connections. Use quality cable – even Fiberoptic if possible! Don’t skimp on the cables. The better quality you buy, the better your viewing experience will be.
NEVER take advice from a salesperson. Don’t listen to what they tell you. They are trying to make a sale, even if it doesn’t match your needs. Do your research first. Know what you want, and what you can spend.

One of the pieces of hardware that I love the most is my Slingbox. A Slingbox lets you watch and control your television through the Internet. I was using the Slingplayer on my Windows Mobile device, but now I’m using the iPhone. There wasn’t anything available for the iPhone, until now!

It’s still in Beta, and hasn’t been released outside of the company yet. However – it’s working!! Soon we’ll be able to use this on our iPhone, folks! Mark demonstrated how it works, and how well it works for me during Macworld.

They feel that they have introduced some sexy controls for the iPhone. When changing channels, there is about a four second buffer, which isn’t bad at all. They have instituted a “favorites” area, which allows you to quickly change channels to whatever it is you love to watch the most. You also don’t have to minimize the video space in order to access your controls, which is great!

Right now, it only works in landscape mode, but that makes sense. They plan to incorporate video-changing mode in the future. They are shooting for release yet this quarter, before the end of March. It will, of course, be available in the App Store, for around the $30.00 price range! Stay tuned, and be ready to finally control your TV through your iPhone!

What is television anymore? How do you define television? Is it a piece of hardware that allows you to watch shows? Or is it serial episodes that can be attained from a variety of sources? No matter how you define it, it’s content. And no matter how you get to the content, you’ll still enjoy it. Netflix and Starz has recently partnered to take viewing content to yet another level.

The Netflix ecosystem is expanding as the popular DVD rental company tries to bulk up its online video streaming business in anticipation of the day when fewer and fewer people want to watch movies after waiting to get a disc in the mail. Last week, the company announced a deal with CBS and Disney to stream current-season shows, and now it has partnered with cable movie channel Starz to let Netflix members view online the Starz Play broadband subscription movie service.
With the Starz agreement, Netflix customers can now view flicks like Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, and No Country for Old Men on their computers or through their TVs, either via a compatible streaming device (like the Netflix Player by Roku) or a home theater PC.

Also, with your next update for your Xbox 360, you’ll also have access to another option to access Netflix streaming. MediaMall Technologies has a media server app, PlayOn, in beta that lets PS3 and Xbox 360 owners stream from online services on their device. This gives you many more options to watch the shows you want, with the quality you’ve come to expect.

How do you stay up-to-date on all your favorite episodes and shows? In recent weeks, I’ve found out about a couple of different apps for the iPhone. One is called “What’s On”. You simply enter in your zip code, and it’ll tell you what is coming on. There’s also “TV Forecast”. That one will tell you when your favorite show’s next episode is coming on. They also have a widget for Mac OS X, as well.

Another site that I came across is Tvnotify. Simply enter in your favorite shows, choose your notification type, and let them remind you when your program is going to air. It doesn’t get any easier than that, and you’ll never again have to miss your favorites!

Yes, I was watching television on my computer, and not on a TV. I was using a website to watch my shows. Does that make it any less of a TV? Do I really need a “TV” to watch my favorite television shows? TV on the Web? Really? Ohhh yeah, really. How convenient is that?

TidalTV looks much like you would expect a full-on DVR experience to look on a “real” television. The channels available are relatively mainstream. There are more channels available than what you would possibly expect on a service like this. You can search and browse through the different major channels, or even check out their listing of “on demand” shows.

Kat got distracted while researching this site for the blog post. She found out that the Food Network channel is on here, and Paula Deen just happened to be showing at that time. We may have lost her for awhile, y’all. She’s quite addicted to the lovely Paula. Oh no… she just found the Wedding network. Since her daughter is getting married at the end of September, we may not see Kat surface again until after that. Apparently, that particular channel has everything and anything you can think of that has to do with weddings.

See what I mean? You can sit right at your computer and watch all your favorite television shows. It’s completely free, and there’s nothing to sign up for. How much better could it possibly get?

I’ve been recording media for Internet distribution since… ever since I could with one of Sony’s first Mavicas (the FD7, which recorded images on a floppy disk). In fact, one of my Gnomies found and published my first webcam recording (which I’ll never live down). I’ve been streaming live video for well over a year now, and I’ll get to those statistics later in this post.

I first mentioned TubeMogul in this blog when it was nothing more than a project it was interesting, but not really what I needed at the time. As I started to produce a regular array of videos, their “sneezing” service evolved enabling me to distribute a single video to several networks without having to encode / upload / tag / describe / name it more than once. Today, TubeMogul released their first Top 40 list – and with 30,000 other publishers, I’m in good company:

You read that right: I’m #2 this month, though I don’t know how long I’ll remain in the top 10 (with competition like HBO, PBS, CBS, iJustine, Warner Bros, and Sony Pictures). Understand, too, that these numbers only reflect the videos that were being tracked through TubeMogul – not my independent uploads to either YouTube or my iTunes podcast feed.

In my humble opinion, our live video stats are even more impressive: over 5 million unique live video viewers watched me do my “thing” in 2007 – a total of 2+ million LIVE viewer hours with an average viewing time of 25 minutes per visitor. Imagine what could happen if I worked with a larger media brand for both live and produced videos?

I guess, for me, the idea of being back “on television” is kinda… over.

We talk about new technology quite a lot. While home visiting my parents at this time, I’ve noticed how much my parents are behind the times when it comes to tech. Here in my old bedroom, there’s actually a small television with an antenna on it. That’s right… no cable.

This little piece of technology, however, was considered to be state-of-the-art at the time it was bought. It has a port in the front of it that allows you to put in something called a VHS tape. I know, most of you are now heading to Google to see what a VHS tape is! Trust me, they were huge back in the day before DVDs. The movies resided on a magnetic strip within the rectangular case. These were played on a device called a VCR. If you wanted to watch part of the movie again, you had to rewind a little bit. If you wanted to watch the whole movie again, you had to rewind it to the beginning.

Is anyone else out there having to deal with old technology when you visit somewhere? How do you get through it? Do you have to smack your hand against the side of a tv to get any reception? What about dialing up to an Internet account from their house, and opening their Netscape browser?? How do you deal with this?!? Doesn’t it make you crazy?

Matt writes: “I’ve been watching your videos on YouTube for a couple months and decided to share a “Top 5” related to HDTVs. I know there’s a lot of people out there buying new TVs, and I thought I might be able to help with the purchasing process. High definition is not going away. It’s here to stay, like it or not. I received a TV for Christmas this past year and thought I’d share a top 5 list of things to keep in mind when purchasing a HDTV.”

Size. While this may seem obvious, it’s important to keep in mind where your TV is going to be placed – and how much room you have. There is a huge difference between standing in the store looking at a wall of TVs and actually seeing it in your house. So, bottom line – make sure you measure before you buy.
Type. There are two major types of high definition TVs – LCDs and plasma. An LCD TV is based off of the same technology that most modern computer monitors use. However, a plasma works by vibrating gas particles inside the TV. Traditionally, plasmas have been able to achieve higher contrast ratios (although LCDs are starting to catch up now). The best way to decide is based on what size TV you’re considering. For smaller sets, LCD is usually the way to go, and for larger sets, plasma would be the better choice. But – if the TV is going to be used in the mountains, or anywhere at a high altitude, get an LCD. Plasmas installed at high altitudes will not produce a good picture because the gas particles will have to work harder in order to form an image.
Supported Formats. HD video generally falls into two categories – 720p and 1080p/1080i. In order to get the maximum experience from your TV (and especially your Blu-Ray player/gaming console), 1080p is the way to go. Even though most (if not all) HD broadcasts are currently in 720p or 1080i, you never know what the future will hold.
Contrast Ratio. For those of you who do not know, the contrast ratio on a TV is a ratio of the brightest color to the darkest color that the set is capable of producing. Simply put, a higher contrast ratio will result in a richer picture. The brights will look brighter, and the darks will look darker. Always shoot for the highest possible contrast ratio in order to maximize your viewing experience. My Samsung 32″ has a 7000:1 – and believe me, the difference is there!
Sources. Nothing is worse than connecting a brand-new HDTV to an analog cable signal (That’s what I had to do for a couple months before getting HD programming). Make sure you remember to stop by your local cable company, pick up an HD set-top box, and sign up for the service. Also, if you want to watch movies in HD, a Blu-Ray player is a nice addition to a new TV.

Are you watching TV right now? Seriously, is there a television on in your room or house at this moment? I honestly don’t know about the future about the television. The future of TV is going to be on the Internet. There’s a reason I publish everything I do to YouTube. About one in three of every video on the Internet is watched on YouTube. There’s a good chance one of mine will show up.

Someone in our chat room asked if the Internet is going to destroy tv. I happen to be using my television as a monitor, since there’s a computer hooked up to it. I also have my Xbox plugged into it. I can watch my cable service hooked up to it. Now, I can watch my content pretty much anywhere I want. To me, it boils down to the content. A “tv” is a machine. Why does it matter where you watch that content? Why does it have to be on a television? I can pull up any show I want to watch right on my computer and watch as I work.

It’s not even “the future”… it’s the present. Television shows and movies can be watched on the Internet. Within ten years, there will be a huge fundamental shift in the way that we view our content. It will take better broadband, yes. However, the Internet isn’t going to destroy “television”. It may lessen the actual mechanism you think of when you think of the word ‘tv’.
