You may have stuffed yourself with turkey and stuffing, but Imei and I enjoyed a less traditional Thanksgiving dinner. It was easy, fun, tasty, and completely stress-free – just like every Thanksgiving should be.

What you see pictured here is: seaweed salad, fried tofu cubes (heated with toasted sesame oil), white rice, and homemade poke – made with minced white onion, green onion, toasted sesame seed oil, futakake, oyster sauce, garlic, salt, low sodium soy sauce, chili flakes, and fresh sashimi-grade tuna! And yes, I splashed some “Rooster Sauce” on the border of my plate to make it pop.

Wicket is happy, because I have a plate of food on my desk. I spent minutes slaving away in my kitchen to make what I feel is the perfect Thanksgiving feast: toast, pretzels, jelly beans and popcorn! Yes, I’m eating like Charlie Brown. And speaking of Charlie Brown and Thanksgiving… the popular cartoon is available free online through Fancast!! Even if you don’t own the DVD like I do, you can still watch from the comfort of your computer chair as you nom your turkey day goodies!

Two food lists tonight? Seriously. I need to hire a cook who knows how to make dishes from literally every country there is! I think Ponzi is getting tired of me asking her to do it. Let’s take a look at some of the top foods from Turkey, sent in by a community member.

• Dolma This is probably the most famous dish on the Turkish menu. There are several different types of Dolma. My favorite is made with pepper and leaf. It consists of rice and ground beef, rolled up in vineyard leaves and stuffed into several peppers.
• Hünkâr Beĝendi This is a delicious side dish which contains a mixture of butter, milk, eggplant and cheese. My mouth is watering up just writing about it.
• Sish kebab/taouk This dish I’m sure everyone has heard of. It is four or five pieces of meat and vegetables barbecued on a single stick. Several dishes are a spin off from this one including Shwoermah and Sultani.
• Hirsiz Kebab (thief’s kebab) This dish is more of a local specialty in southwest Turkey. A big ceramic pot is heated by surrounding it with hot dirt and burning coal. The pot is then opened, and used like an oven to cook potatoes and sheep or goat meat. If you ever have a chance to eat this dish, I guarantee that you will love it.
• Doner Doner is basically pita bread filled with meat or chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. Most of you know Doner as Sish Taouk sandwich, named such by the Lebanese… or Souvlaki, named such by the Greeks.
• Baklava Baklava has been the most influential Turkish food. Nothing tastes better than the original Turkish Baklava made of aşki (the layers of the Baklava), nuts, and delicious syrup.

If I drink anything, it’s usually either soda water or coffee (but seldom simultaneously). I decided to exceed my palate’s comfort level and venture into the world of Jones Soda this evening. Mind you, I didn’t flip for their typical cola flavors – that wouldn’t be very interesting, would it?

Turkey and Gravy, Sweet Potato, Dinner Roll, Pea, and Antacid – all sodas in the Jones Soda Holiday 2006 pack. I’m still not sure what drove me to bring such an array of carbonated dissidents home with me, but the results were… well, you’ll just have to watch the video.

Last year, someone told me that Jones Soda had released a liquid “Thanksgiving meal” of sorts. It’s a novelty food item that I knew I’d have to drink at some point. I always appreciate when a “normal” flavor is blended with a “normal” food to create a potential culinary abomination. Like wasabi ice cream, for instance – many foods are worth trying once. Sometimes twice!

This afternoon, I was given an opportunity to try the 2006 Holiday Pack. A local grocery store had ‘em in stock, although the items had been officially removed from shelves yesterday. I begged and pleaded with the store manager to kindly fetch me a case. He obliged, and the rest (as they say) is history. I decided to record my reactions on video – for posterity.
