Recently we have uploaded several travel tips videos, listing the best places to visit in your hometowns. The response to my request for more was so overwhelming, I cannot possibly create a video for each of them! I plan to add one of these a day here in the blog, so that I can share with you all of the places you should definitely check out if you ever have the chance to.

Today’s submission is from Daniel, and is filled with his favorite places to visit in Hong Kong. Daniel lives in Australia, but travels to Hong Kong frequently, and knows his way around quite well. Here are his recommendations:

  • Visit Victoria Peak – Named after the British monarch Queen Victoria, this hilly landmark is visited by every tourist to Hong Kong. A cable-pulled train takes visitors from Hong Kong Park to the peak. You can travel up the peak by bus too, but the cable car is more exciting. The views of the city from the peak are breathtaking.
  • Visit Ocean Park and Waterworld – Near the harbor southwest of Hong Kong island is a massive theme park and entertainment center. Amusement rides, a butterfly park, an aviary and marine shows are some of the highlights of Ocean Park. Particularly interesting is the Middle Kingdom walk-through exhibition, which features recreated street scenes and palaces from long ago. It’s a fun way to learn about China’s past. Waterworld has slides, a wave pool, man-made rapids and other child-friendly activities.
  • Visit Temple Street Night Markets – Temple Street is a street located in the suburb of Jordan in Kowloon, Hong Kong. It is well known for its night market and the busiest flea market at night in the territory. It is a thriving market for tech geeks as they sell lots of gizmo’s, gadgets and souvenirs. This is a must see for any geek in your community.
  • Visit the Wan Chai Computer Center – The Wan Chai Computer Center has two floors of practically nothing but shops selling computers, computer peripherals, tech supplies, digital consumer electronics & cell phones just to name a few. Plus its all legal! Most of the shops are not chain stores but their prices are sometimes better than the chain stores. Just like most all the other computer shopping centers in Hong Kong, it is crowded especially during off-work hours.
  • Check out Stanley Market – Stanley Market, located in the southern part of Hong Kong Island, is a dry market frequented by tourists. There are the usual oriental-looking gifts which you can find there. In addition to the market, there is a strip by the water with a row of bars and restaurants. Many of them have outdoors dining in the weekends when the street is closed off to motorized vehicles. When it comes to shopping for souvenirs, this market is a one stop shop for pretty much everything and its also really cheap.

Hong Kong has always intrigued me. The pictures I’ve seen are absolutely beautiful. Now, after reading about some of the places to visit, I wouldn’t mind checking them out myself.

Have you ever visited Japan… or anywhere seriously cool like that? What were some of the best things you were able to see and do while there? Shogo is a member of our live community who happens to live in Tokyo. He sent in his list of top ten places to visit should you ever find yourself in the area.

  • Go to Akihabara – It is the most famous tech town in Japan, even known as Akihabara Electric Town. Funny thing is, the train station in Akihabara actually has a exit to enter the main area that has electronics in Akihabara. Go at night, I personally think it has one of the best night scenes in Tokyo.
  • Tokyo Animation Center in Akihabara – This is pretty much the place you have to go, if you go to Akihabara. It has a lot of information, demos, showings and events about animation (called anime as many of you may know in Japan) and gaming.
  • Go shopping in Akihabara – Again, Akihabara is very famous for the vast amounts of electronics. Just go to the main street, Chuo-dori (Pronounciation : Chūō-dōri) and go in any direction, any street.
  • Go to Chuo-dori on a Sunday in Akihabara – Cosplayers galore.
  • Japan? Sushi. – You have to eat Sushi, but not at those conveyor belt shops. You have to go to a real restaurant, and experience real Sushi. Just watch how much you eat, it’s expensive. I recommend trying Ginza Hokake in Ginza. (A course is 10,000 yen which is about 100 usd.)
  • Check out the Sony Building in Ginza – You can even see cutting edge products that aren’t available for purchase yet.
  • Tokyo Tower – Getting less geeky, you might want to go to the Tokyo Tower, much like the Eiffel Tower in Paris. There is a glass floor on one of the floors, and you can look straight down through it, quite exhillirating if you have a fear of heights.
  • Mitsubishi Minatomirai Industrial Museum – Although it is not exactly in Tokyo, it is very near. It is very interesting, has exhibits on space, ocean, transportation and more.
  • Tokyo Disney Land or Disney Sea – Just like any Disney Land but hey, its fun!
  • Asakusa Shrine – Just plain beautiful, if you want to see the beauty of classic old Japanese architecture, you have to go here. Make sure you bring a camera, you would want to take a picture every step you take.

Community member “a_v58″ sent me a short list of PHP tips. These days, people are rabid in their thirst to learn more about PHP. If you want to become a programmer, you should know what you’re doing when it comes to PHP. The following tips were sent in to me by Andrew. They are solid tips, so I wanted to pass them along to all of you.

  • Don’t be tempted to use packets such as WAMP or XAMPP that install and configure Apache, PHP, MySQL for you automatically. You’ll learn more by installing them one-by-one and configuring them manually. After a quick Google search, you’ll find a list of recommended configurations for PHP and/or Apache – depending whether your machine is a server or a development machine. I recommend installing in this order: MySQL, Apache, PHP.
      A small suggestion to check if all 3 were installed and configured correctly: place a small PHP script in the .htdocs directory of Apache in which you call the phpinfo function, as well as one function from every extension (MySQL, cURL, Java, etc.). If there are no warnings or errors, everything should be fine.
      For fewer headaches and happier programming, I also strongly recommend using an IDE such as EclipsePHP (which can be found at eclipse.org) or Zend. You might also look into xDebug.
  • Remember to sanitize your database inputs. To avoid this, understand what this is and how this works. Google or read on Wikipedia for “SQL injection.” Use functions such as ‘addslashes’ and ‘get_magic_quotes_gpc.’
  • When you think you did everything right and you don’t understand why something isn’t working, look at your code carefully, debug it, and possibly run a ‘var_dump’ on all the variables to see whether something is faulty. If you still can’t figure it out, take a break and get some fresh air. Come back to the problem with a clear mind.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask on forums or the community questions. Remember: there are no stupid questions. However, if for every little mistake you ask, and you don’t figure a couple of questions on your own… no offense: programming may not be right for you.
  • Why choose PHP? It has a syntax similar to C/C++ (which are some of the used frequently for desktop applications. PHP.net has almost everything you might need to know – including examples and user-contributed notes (which may contain exactly what you need).
  • When somebody asks you a question, don’t be afraid to answer. You’ll either help that person by teaching him or her something new (or be corrected by someone with more experience – in which case, you’ll learn something new).

Liz Money was kind enough to submit a video for me to add to our beauty tips and tricks collection. Granted, this particular video isn’t geared towards the guys. But hey! There are a heck of a lot of girl Geeks, as well! All you dudes, just chill and skip this one. Ladies – pay attention and learn how to get those sexy, smokey eyes.

Apparently you need several different fluff brushes in order to put all of this goop on! Make sure you have angled ones, and many different sizes. The particular palette she’s using has the colors already laid out for you. It tells you what color goes where on your eyes!! I guess they also are good for all skin tones, and day or night wear.

First you’ll add your primer (eyeshadow base). This will make your lid sticky enough to make the makeup last longer. Make sure you pat it on, and let it dry fully. Start with your lightest color, and sweep from the lashline to just under the brow using the large fluffy brush.

Next comes the medium color, which is the lid color. Use the smallest brush, or an angled one. Press it into the palette to get a maximum amount of pigment on the brush. Start at the lashline, and trace around your lid.

The challenging part is doing the crease… with the darkest color. Using a round brush, press it into the color again to get the right amount of pigment. It goes right where your lid creases. This creates depth, and shadowing. The trick with the smokey eyes is to blend a ton, so you don’t look stripey.

In order to line the upper lid, you’ll need to take the sharply angled brush and dip it in the darkest color. Start at the inside corner, and carefully trace across your lid, right at the lashline. Make sure you keep that eyelid pulled taut!

If you want to be more dramatic, you can line your lower lashline as well. You’re going to line the inside rim of your lower lashline. It sounds scary, but apparently it’s not! It looks crazy Liz – you’re right about that! But you’re right again when you say it makes your eyes pop.

So there you have it! Now when you’re wanting to look especially gorgeous for us Geeky dudes, you know what to do! Thanks again, Liz!

Well, here we are again with another installment from the Geek Eye for the Sloppy Guy! It’s about time us guys had a chance in the beauty spotlight, don’t you think? We need to stand up and show that we care how we look, just as much as the next guy does – well, as much as the girls do anyway! Sit back and pay attention… you might even want to take notes.

Take a look at your fingernails right now. Do you see too much white there on the edge? Then you’ve let them grow far past their prime. Clip ‘em! If you don’t have fingernail clippers, buy them. Seriously, it’s not that expensive and it won’t break the bank if you do. If you have some but haven’t used them in a few years – sterilize those puppies first.

While guys don’t need to be all frou-frou and have manicures at a salon, we should still care about how our fingernails look. Having ragged and dirty nails just shows that you don’t care about yourself, and will make chicks not want to care much about you! Having nails like that doesn’t make you more “manly”. It just makes you seem dirty and lazy.

Here’s a tip to remember: “If you see any white, get it out of sight!”. The second tip would be to stop biting at your nails. It also makes you look like you’re in grade school again. It’s truly disgusting, when you consider what could be under your nails. Admit it – you pick things on your body. You’re a GUY after all. And then you bite your nails… yeah. Whatever you picked or scratched just ended up in your mouth. HELLO! That’s just nasty and wrong.

All you have to do is grab a pair of nail clippers. Trim those nails down, and make yourself look like a million bucks.

Seriously, it’s not that expensive and it won’t break the bank if you do. If you have some but haven’t used them in a few years – sterilize those puppies first.

While guys don’t need to be all frou-frou and have manicures at a salon, we should still care about how our fingernails look. Having ragged and dirty nails just shows that you don’t care about yourself, and will make chicks not want to care much about you! Having nails like that doesn’t make you more “manly”. It just makes you seem dirty and lazy.

Here’s a tip to remember: “If you see any white, get it out of sight!”. The second tip would be to stop biting at your nails. It also makes you look like you’re in grade school again. It’s truly disgusting, when you consider what could be under your nails. Admit it – you pick things on your body. You’re a GUY after all. And then you bite your nails… yeah. Whatever you picked or scratched just ended up in your mouth. HELLO! That’s just nasty and wrong.

All you have to do is grab a pair of nail clippers. Trim those nails down, and make yourself look like a million bucks.

Here we go with the second in my series of beauty tips for guys! This one deals with shaving your face. I had stubble, and needed to deal with it. I usually go a few days between shaving. I’m comfortable that way, since my skin is pretty sensitive. Some women prefer a bit of stubble – and some don’t. Check with your woman to see what she prefers!

I don’t recommend using a disposable razor if you live with a woman! No matter what you say or do, they will use it to shave their legs or whatever else they feel like shaving. Then when you try to use it again – yep, you guessed it! Your razor will be dull and useless. In light of that, there’s really only one thing you can do – use an electric razor. I’ve had mine for awhile now, and I really like it. I’ve tried other brands, and I just wasn’t happy with them. I like the Braun, and stick with their series whenever I need to buy a new one.

Before shaving, consider taking a shower. Doing so will loosen up the hairs in their follicles, due to the steam. Rub your hands or washrag across your face while in the shower. It will loosen up the hairs, and make them even easier to remove. Wash your face while in there, to soften the hairs. Don’t use bar soap to do this! Apparently, they make separate soapy stuff just for faces. I KNOW! Don’t yell at me – I don’t make the rules. Just buy the stuff and use it. Your woman will thank you!

Now… you’re out of the shower, and you’re ready to shave. Turn the razor on before you apply it to your face. Otherwise, you’re going to tear up your face. I tend to get rid of the “soul patch” first… that’s the area directly in the middle of your chin. Sometimes, I quit there. Other times, I do the area where a moustache would go.

Here’s a bonus tip: Don’t use your razor for nose hair or eyebrows. Use a trimmer or tweezers for those, or you’re gonna regret it BIG TIME.

Eric is a regular visitor in our live community, who goes by than handle of iBowler or Bowler4Ever. He is an avid bowler, and sent in his tips to help all of you bowl higher scores! While I read Eric’s bowling tips, I had a video done by XXOwnsXY from our chat room. She was playing around with OECake in that video, and it’s way cool.

  • Know your shoe size! You need special shoes to bowl in, as street shoes can damage the approach. If you don’t know, check inside your shoe for a tag or the bottom part of the shoe.
  • After you get your lane, look for the bowling ball that weighs the perfect amount for you and make sure it fits your hand!
  • Whatever your body weight is, take 10% from it. That would be the weight of your ball. BUT, if it’s too heavy, keep going a pound lighter until it feels somewhat decent for you.
  • Don’t EVER get the tightest fit for you. If you’ve checked out YouTube, people have launched balls into the ceiling…and clocks! Also, never get balls with the fingerholes too big…you don’t want to get a broken foot! Make sure it’s snug, but still loose enough for you fingers!
  • NO FOOD OR DRINKS IN THE BOWLING AREA! There’s a reason why those signs are all over the place. What happens if you spill soda all over the approach? You stick! sugary carbonated water turns into a sticky syrup that is a PAIN to clean off the approach and the shoes!…And if you fall and hurt yourself…it’s nobody’s fault but your own. Don’t even bring water down there (precautionary measures).
  • You see that black line where the gutters start? Don’t you DARE go past it! That line is called the foul line and what it does is a) Lets you know that you went too far down and b) saves you from injury. Why? Because after that line there is a ton of oil that goes the rest of the way down the lane a certain distance. That oil is clear and very slippery and you WILL get hurt!
  • Bowler’s Courtesy. Now I know you’re new to the game and all that, but league bowlers (such as myself) HATE it when people just rush up right beside or even in front of them and bowl. It’s very agitating and dangerous! Bowling balls weigh up to 16 pounds and if yo get smacked by one of those suckers, you’re going to get some broken bones!
  • If you’re bowling on the first or last lane of the bowling center, do NOT go down that aisle and knock down the pins that way. Why? It’s dangerous and you can get kicked and banned from the center. It’s happened! So don’t do it!

As we get older, the world wide web gets newer. We find ourselves not able to keep up with the new world because we’re still stuck spending senseless hours checking 20 emails and trying to figure out how to install a program on Vista. For those of you like me, going on 21 for the 9th year in a row, here are 5 tips to help you get through the old stuff so you can stay hip with the new.

  • Book it before you book it. Now let’s say you are in the bored surfing mood, and you come across a cool website that you like. You think you would like to go back to it. The little “favorite” button or “bookmark” button will remember it for you. That way, you don’t spend 30 minutes to an hour getting frustrated, trying to figure out the website. So just book it before you book it. If it was just a “mood” website, you can always right click and delete it later!
  • You have the “best” pop up blocker installed and are certain nothing that shouldn’t is getting through. If it does… you just hit cancel… and what the heck you’re at their site!4. So, not only does crap still get through, you also have to read it before you click it. For example some will say, “to continue to the website click ‘cancel’.” Them sneaky sons of www dot coms did it again! Don’t waste another 15 minutes of what you have left of your life playing click that pop-up!
  • The dreaded Email. You always check your email when you get online. Yesterday, even though it took you two hours, you got your email down to 0 and now it’s back up to let’s say 20 new messages. Now, you don’t want to waste another two hours checking and replying and wondering who that “Jim” is that says he knows you and has been looking for you. So, you probably didn’t know this like the “hip” kids do… but not all spam messages make it into the spam folders. Them sneaky sons of www dot coms can sure sneak them in there. Trust me, 9 times out of 10 you are not the lucky winner in a drawing, or have been selected in a special giveaway. And honey… even though your memory’s going… you don’t know Jim! I personally hit the little spam button on those emails and eventually after a couple times they go away.
  • Not that this has ever happened to me before… you find yourself in let’s say Chris’s chat room. And let’s say the topic is gadgets. Now all the “young’ns” in the channel are chatting and swapping gadget ideas, and you find yourself lost asking “hey, what is an iPod?” or “hey, what is a 3g card?” Of course, nobody answers you. They are busy thinking, “You gotta be kidding me right? They’re just messing around.” Well, here’s a tip: make Google your new best friend. When you are lost, Google will help you find your way. Taking a few minutes to google something is a lot better than looking dumb or like an old fart in chat.
  • Watch your links. You’re chatting with one of your online buddies and they send you a link to lets say rnicrosoft.com. Earlier, you had Googled some new software that just came out, and you would like to buy it. So, you click on the link, find the software and give all your info. Weeks later… your CC is maxed out! If you carefully look at the link it’s r n i c r o s o f t . c o m. The r and the n are pushed together to look like m. This is just an example. though I’m pretty sure with your protection maybe something that drastic won’t happen, but that is one way your passwords and info. can get stolen. Sometimes, you are better off to type in the link yourself that way your not wasting even more time online and off trying to get this mess resolved.

You’re buying a camera, but you have absolutely no idea what is best suited to your needs. Even for a seasoned photographer, it can be tough. Try to keep these tips in mind next time you’re shopping for a new camera.

  • Read the reviews. This is especially important if you don’t know much about photography or cameras. Camera reviewers tend to be really knowledgeable and passionate people. There are many sites that have extremely thorough reviews that bring up very specific things that you probably wouldn’t have bothered to check out, like whether or not the camera has manual focus controls.
  • Make sure you see sample shots/footage Do some web searches for sample shots from the camera you’re looking at. Don’t go the companies website, because their pictures are usually done professionally in optimum lighting situations. Search on Flickr for the camera to see samples or on video sites like Vimeo, Youtube and Blip.tv. These will be from regular camera owners and users playing around with their cameras and it’ll give you a good idea of what you can do with the camera.
  • Go see the camera. So, you see the camera of your dreams, and it looks great, however just because it looks great on paper doesn’t mean you’ll love it in real life. For example, if the camera is too large or small for your hands, it doesn’t really matter how great it’s specs are, your are never going to be comfortable with it.
  • Watch out for scams Cameras are popular bait in online scams. If you see a deal that looks too good to be true, well, it probably is. Do a search for the seller and see what comes up. Last time I was looking at a camera I saw 3 retailers selling it at an unbelievable price, but when I search for their names I found multiple blog and forum posts for each saying how their were a scam, so even had pictures of taken from the addresses listed on their sites where they found boarded up or abandoned buildings. Just because the site lists a phone number, it may not be enough. Also make sure you know where the camera is from. Not where it’s shipped from, the camera’s origin. The camera might end up being from Japan in which case there will be no warranty.
  • Pay attention to the small details When buying a camera there are a lot of tiny things that you might not notice when researching a camera. Here are some of the most important ones:
    • Media types Remember to check out what type of digital media the camera takes, like SD, SDHC, Compact flash. Digital SLR do better with Compact Flash and SD and SDHD are more common in smaller point-and- shoots.
    • File Format Look to make sure that the file formats are something you can actually work with for example see if the camcorder requires AVCHD support, because many video editing programs have trouble with it and it is slightly lower quality than tape.
    • Viewfinder It’s a very handy thing to have on your camera, if you don’t care, you can ignore this, but if you do, make sure you check that out because while most cameras will have one, many will just be a little nubby thing that won’t do much for you.
    • Battery type Look for rechargeable Lithium Ion battery cameras as the camera will go longer than one with standard batteries.

Here are some great tips for being a good Ebay seller. Building up an excellent feedback rating is critical to becoming a successful seller. Following these tips will help you do just that.

  • List your auction clearly. In the description, be as clear as possible. If the device is damaged, say that is is. If it’s new in box, say new in box. If still in mint condition, say so. If used and has wear, say so.
  • Start with a low bid price. You’d be astounded by how many people look at the starting price. If it’s high enough that one could go to walmart and pay a few dollars more more to get, then your starting price is to high. If you dont want under a certain amount, set a reserved price for the lowest you want to take. While this cost a little more in the listing, it makes it that you can be happy knowing that the item wont go for less than you really wanted it to.
  • PICTURES!!!! Pictures help sell. If someone cant see the item, or a version of it, they might tend to go to another seller for the item. If you can, take picutres of YOUR item, not a stock file photo of the device.
  • Set your shipping price fairly. If the shipping price is too much, people WILL balk at the item. The buyers will look at your item as crap. Now, if you specify what method you are using, they can then look and see what it cost themselves. Also, i have seen where some have automatic shipping calculators on the auction. This way, you can see what it cost for quicker shipping methods.
  • Allow buyers to ask question. If you answer the questions they have quickly, they are might be more tempted to buy your item simple because it looks like you cared about that they were asking about.
  • If the seller refused to pay, you can give the second highest bidder a chance to get the item on a “second chance”. This is good if someone was being the north end of a southbound mule and made a fraudulent bid near the end of the auction.
  • Use the ability for a person to “Buy it now”. This really helps. You can set a low auction bid, and an option to buy it at a certain price. It also allows for a person to skip the entire auction protions and buy the item from you. The only thing bad is that if someone sends a bid, the “buy it now option” goes away.. At least it did before. eBAY might have changed that recently.

People ask every day about ways they can keep their computer running smoothly, and how to make it faster. Here are some excellent tips that will help you accomplish both tasks. Keep those top five lists coming!

  • Only install software that you need to have running on your system. Having software on your computer that you don’t actually need only increases the amount of used disk space on the said drive, whether it be your operating system drive or a secondary or external drive. If you have any software that you no longer use and would like to get rid of it, you can download a freeware program called Revo Uninstaller, which you can download for free. I can safely say that I’ve used this program to uninstall old programs I don’t use anymore or software I’ve installed just to test out. This program does a
    great job of scanning the system for invalid registry entries that get left behind after using this program to uninstall your programs compared to using Add/Remove programs in the control panel.
  • Do some research and use before downloading any random program off the Internet. It is true that there are a lot of great free ware and shareware programs out there, but you have to understand, that the Internet is a big road to be driving on with your computer. Do your homework and do a little research about the program you wish to or are thinking about downloading and trying out. You would be surprised how much software out there is designed to give you the impression that it will do something like make your PC faster or make your Internet speed faster when in reality it will make your PC even run slower and might even have some nasties built-in! Be careful what you download!
  • Don’t mess with anything inside the Operating System you know nothing about. Changing even the slightest zero to a one or one to a zero in the registry could leave your system unusable immediately or on the next reboot of the system. Don’t mess around the core of the operating system if you don’t know what you’re doing and especially if you’re only a basic user who checks E-Mail and rarely surfs the web. If you are a basic user and are still inclined to learn how to work with the inner workings of an operating system, use Google. Google is the biggest search engine and you can find just about anything on it.
  • Use Anti-Virus software, even if you don’t want to pay for security software, there’s no excuse not to download a free Anti-Virus program such as AVG or Avast. I prefer AVG for performance reasons when choosing a free AV but Avast has slightly better detection rates. If you don’t care about paying for Anti-Virus software try out ESET’s NOD32, it will not slow down your system and is highly recommended by download the video:

      • If you are a new user to the computer’s particular Operating System, read the user guide that comes with the computer to familiarize yourself with it. You can also go to the manufacturer’s website, and check out their FAQ’s and/or Help system. You can also wander over to the Lockergnome Help Forums.
      • If you haven’t bought the computer yet, and you will be changing Operating Systems, consider trying it out first. Check to see if a friend or colleague may have the same O/S you are wanting to buy. This way, you can try it out, and make sure it will be a good fit for you.

      So maybe there IS something fishy in my egg nog. Or just maybe… it’s Geek Gone Wild! No matter… it made me feel like getting up and dancing to some awesome music!

      Nah, it’s the newest fad in Geek fashion! The 8-Bit Tie is sure to please any Geek on your shopping list.

      A few of us monkeys at ThinkGeek had this great shared dream a few months ago. In it, the whole world was 8-Bit, just like the video games we grew up on. We found ourselves having to leap from platform to platform, to search for pieces of the Triforce of Wisdom, and to fight scary mutated plants and animals. The music was awesome (and still stuck in our heads) but the coolest part was what we were wearing: a tie. But not just any tie, an 8-Bit tie!
