The community has asked me to do more videos about software. The biggest challenge is to find titles that most people may not have heard of. I also try to find things that are affordable and cross-platform. The other day, I stumbled across this software which is free – and cross-platform. What does it do? Perhaps the title of this video will help you figure that out!

CleanHaven will clean up your text. It’s not a text editor, so don’t mistake it for one. It’s not even a word processor. It’s a text cleaner. You can go through and change the case. Remove duplicates, show duplicates or show uniques. Fix spacing, columns, spelling errors, sort lines in several different ways, and even remove excess returns.

There are hundreds of things you can do with this powerful piece of free software. For example you can turn all company names to Sentence Case, all UK postcodes to Uppercase or remove any trailing spaces, tabs or punctuation. There is no limit to the amount of text that can be pasted. Simply set the attribute(s) you want changed, and tell the software to clean.

I have yet to find a text editor that is the one to beat all the rest. None of them are perfect, so I try them all. On OS X, there really aren’t many I’m impressed with. However, there’s another option – on the Web!

ecoder is an open-source, web-based text editor. It includes a file browser, file uploader, and tabbed system to allow multiple files to be edited at the same time. Keyboard short-cuts lend it the feel of a locally installed application.

All of your basic text-editing commands are available. But what makes it so unique is that it has syntax highlighting. You’ll see the different colors as soon as you input your document. This makes it much easier for you to do what needs to be done. It’ll help you detect any mistakes in your code if there are any.

You might be working away from your own computer, and need access to check your code. Why not just flip open a browser, throw your file in there, and carry on about your work? Check out ecoder the next time you need to edit a document.

Over the years, I’ve used a variety of text editors on pretty much every operating system. I’m still looking for a good text editor for OS X. There just aren’t any that do what I want to do, and get out of my way when I don’t want to use their features.

What happens if you need to write? You probably do it on the desktop. But there are a million things on your desktop, breaking your concentration. When you really need to focus, why not strip your desktop down so you can just write? JDarkRoom lets you do just that. It is cross-platform, and free. When you launch it, you’ll be prompted with something that asks you what it is you want to do. You can write and edit your text without any distractions.

JDarkRoom is a popular, simple full-screen text file editor with none of the usual bells and whistles that might distract you from the job in hand. If you are writing a novel, essay, thesis or just need to be able to concentrate on your writing, then JDarkRoom may help you.

If you’re using your computer to write, every distraction you can think of is just a click away. JDarkRoom allows you to filter those out. However, if you need to stop writing and check on something else (research, maybe?), simply hit ALT + Tab, and it brings you back to your normal desktop. Then you just click “ok”, and JDarkRoom comes back.

But seriously, I really need a good text editor for OS X. It needs to be clean, fast, uber-configurable. Free would be good, as well, but not necessary. I’m willing to pay for a program, as long as it’s excellent.
