I never thought I’d see the day when a USB device worked on both OS X and Windows to allow me to record video signals, including digital cable video signals! I can also schedule recordings, even remotely from my iPhone! There’s also the ability to chat with others, and see what other people are watching.

This week, I’m taking the Green Screen Challenge a step or two further than usual! Normally, I make a blog post, showcasing a few of my favorite entries. This time around, you can actually win a couple of very cool things!

The challenge: Create a Gnomedex commercial! My annual Gnomedex conference is only five weeks away, and it’s shaping up to be the best one yet! To help spread the excitement, I want you to come up with your very own Gnomedex commercial. Be as creative and innovative as you can – but please keep Creative Commons licensing in mind. We don’t want any legal troubles.

During live calls a bit back, I received one from someone who couldn’t believe they were actually talking to me. His main question was wondering if I’d ever go back to television.

In short – yes! I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I loved the atmosphere and pace of television. And, of course, I can reach a much wider audience!

Apparently, I looked quite nerdy back then. Even though I’ve aged well, I admit to still being nerdy. I wasn’t sure what more to say to this caller, as he seemed to be a bit uhm… under the weather. He was really happy he was able to get through on the live phone, so at least we apparently made his day.

Keep your eyes and ears open for the next time we’re doing live calls. You can call in to discuss anything tech related, or even talk about current events!

Stealing it is not the way to get an HDTV. If you don’t know where to start, we have some tips sent in by DellMan94 to help you know what to look for when buying a new HDTV. HD is here to stay, that’s for sure. I know you cannot go back once you’ve used an HDTV.

See it for yourself. If you have the opportunity to walk into a showroom and watch the television in action – and play with the remote – take it! The more you research by actually experiencing one, the better off you’ll be.
Buy for your needs. In other words, buy the TV that is most suited for how and where you’ll be using it. Keep in mind, if you’ll be in an environment with controlled lighting, you can get whatever you want. If you’ll have low lighting, be aware of the type of screen on the TV you purchase.
Don’t forget about the sound! Check out the speakers, and see how it sounds. You may even want to consider buying external speakers.
Use the best connections. Use quality cable – even Fiberoptic if possible! Don’t skimp on the cables. The better quality you buy, the better your viewing experience will be.
NEVER take advice from a salesperson. Don’t listen to what they tell you. They are trying to make a sale, even if it doesn’t match your needs. Do your research first. Know what you want, and what you can spend.

I made my first television appearance back in 1997, on a show called Home Computing. I had been asked to appear to talk about my Lockergnome newsletter, and what it was all about. Back then, the newsletter consisted of information relating to Windows 95, software and games. Anything you can think of that related to the Windows family of products, I checked out and discussed. Instead of looking at software about things from companies such as Microsoft, I instead talked about shareware and freeware programs that were available at the time. Even back then, I was more about getting good programs for free than I was about paying for programs.

At that time, I had over 100,000 subscribers to the Lockergnome newsletter. Today, we still have that many people who read what we put out five nights a week! One of the pieces of hardware that I love the most is my Slingbox. A Slingbox lets you watch and control your television through the Internet. I was using the Slingplayer on my Windows Mobile device, but now I’m using the iPhone. There wasn’t anything available for the iPhone, until now!

It’s still in Beta, and hasn’t been released outside of the company yet. However – it’s working!! Soon we’ll be able to use this on our iPhone, folks! Mark demonstrated how it works, and how well it works for me during Macworld.

They feel that they have introduced some sexy controls for the iPhone. When changing channels, there is about a four second buffer, which isn’t bad at all. They have instituted a “favorites” area, which allows you to quickly change channels to whatever it is you love to watch the most. You also don’t have to minimize the video space in order to access your controls, which is great!

Right now, it only works in landscape mode, but that makes sense. They plan to incorporate video-changing mode in the future. They are shooting for release yet this quarter, before the end of March. It will, of course, be available in the App Store, for around the $30.00 price range! Stay tuned, and be ready to finally control your TV through your iPhone!

Hot females in pop culture aren’t hard to find. Finding one who could beat the crap out of anyone who gets in there way? Harder to find. Finding one who can beat the crap out of anyone and isn’t a two-dimensional cardboard cut-out of a character? Even harder. That’s why I’ve come to bring you a list of the top five butt-kicking females. There are a few rules to the list:

They have to come from some facet of pop culture… be it comics, movies, books, or TV.
The characters themselves must also have some depth to them. They must kick butt, and be interesting.
They have to be considered hot by a marginal part of the population.

And, without further ado, here are the Top Five Most Butt-Kicking Hotties.

Chun-Li – The Street Fighter Series What a way to start. Chun-Li is one of the first females I remember ever seeing in a fighting game as a child. She was also the first female character I was proud to play as. People who hadn’t played the game much would laugh, but they wouldn’t laugh long. Hit ‘em with a little Spinning Bird Kick or throw the Hyakuretsu Kyaku at them, and they soon realize that they just lost to a chick. A hot chick. A hot asian chick. Need I say more?
Felicia Hardy AKA Black Cat – Spider-Man Comics Like many great characters, she evolved over the years to become more sympathetic. She started out as a simple cat burglar, but she evolved into a character simply after Spider-Mans affection and was more of a hero really. However, one thing was always the same from the start of the character up till now: she was freaking hot. Skintight black costume, well-endowed, sultry, and seductive as hell.
Uma Thurman – Kill Bill Uma Thurman can either look really hot or just awkward. Quentin Tarantino manages to make her kick some major ass and look damn good while doing it. Once she gets into that Bruce Lee jumpsuit, you know two things. One, she is about to kick some ass. Two, she is going to look that damn good for the rest of the movie. And there is just something about a woman on a warpath that is just so alluring.
Milla Jovovich – The Fifth Element For a lot of guys, their idea of a hot woman is usually the same as their idea of a voluptuous woman. It usually involves big boobs and sometimes a big butt. Milla Jovovich tore that idea apart when she appeared in The Fifth Element. No man can resist her when she shows up in the outfit consisting of a few white straps. She is small, slender, and sexy as all hell. Plus, if you had any doubt in your mind about falling in love with her at first, as soon as she turns on that adorable charm, you are in. Then she starts beating the hell out of people. And not just in a, “Hey suck my fist!” kind of beating. I’m talking lethal, tactical, planned out assaults on groups of people who, by just looking at them, shouldn’t even have to worry about her. What else is there to say? “Multipass.”
Devon Aoki – Sin City Ah, little Miho. Deadly little Miho. As far as looks go, Devon Aoki has it all. She has that foreign appeal. She is small and cuddly. She has a perfect face. She is in great shape. Devon Aoki is so freaking hot and irresistible. And those little pout-y lips just top everything off. And that’s all without mentioning her skills in that movie. She is a trained assassin. She doesn’t need to speak. She controls every situation without uttering a single word. Before you even know you’ve entered a fight, she has already made sure that you have lost. She can kill a man with any assortment of weapons, and you can guarantee she will look damn-good doing it. She is the force behind the Girls of Old Town. Sure, Rosario Dawson’s Gail was the leader, and she played an important role, but take another look at the movie. Devon Aoki is the only woman who manages to keep everything together despite everything that is going on. She takes out the crooked cops. She saves Dwight. Twice. She is the kind of person you know you can depend on, no matter the situation. She’s one of the deadliest women on film and she is too damn hot.

So there you have it. The five hottest, most badass females. The list ran the full spectrum of pop culture, from video games and comics to movies. I’m sure I’ve left a few of your personal favorites off the list, and I’m sure some of the ones on my list aren’t ones you necessarily agree with. So let me know what you think in the comments below. What is television anymore? How do you define television? Is it a piece of hardware that allows you to watch shows? Or is it serial episodes that can be attained from a variety of sources? No matter how you define it, it’s content. And no matter how you get to the content, you’ll still enjoy it. Netflix and Starz has recently partnered to take viewing content to yet another level.

The Netflix ecosystem is expanding as the popular DVD rental company tries to bulk up its online video streaming business in anticipation of the day when fewer and fewer people want to watch movies after waiting to get a disc in the mail. Last week, the company announced a deal with CBS and Disney to stream current-season shows, and now it has partnered with cable movie channel Starz to let Netflix members view online the Starz Play broadband subscription movie service.
With the Starz agreement, Netflix customers can now view flicks like Spider-Man 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, and No Country for Old Men on their computers or through their TVs, either via a compatible streaming device (like the Netflix Player by Roku) or a home theater PC.

Also, with your next update for your Xbox 360, you’ll also have access to another option to access Netflix streaming. MediaMall Technologies has a media server app, PlayOn, in beta that lets PS3 and Xbox 360 owners stream from online services on their device. This gives you many more options to watch the shows you want, with the quality you’ve come to expect.

How do you stay up-to-date on all your favorite episodes and shows? In recent weeks, I’ve found out about a couple of different apps for the iPhone. One is called “What’s On”. You simply enter in your zip code, and it’ll tell you what is coming on. There’s also “TV Forecast”. That one will tell you when your favorite show’s next episode is coming on. They also have a widget for Mac OS X, as well.

Another site that I came across is Tvnotify. Simply enter in your favorite shows, choose your notification type, and let them remind you when your program is going to air. It doesn’t get any easier than that, and you’ll never again have to miss your favorites!

Top Gear is an award-winning BBC television series about motor vehicles, mainly cars. The show is presented by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, James May and The Stig, an anonymous test driver. It is apparently quite popular amongst Geeks, to the point of some of them being rabid fans.

No offense, but I imagine an american version will preserve none of the qualities that TopGear has. For a start, Clarkson, May and Hammond are a completely irreplaceable combination (even though Clarkson is actually a very carefully crafted character, and nothing like his real self). Then there’s the heritage of the show itself, it was after all born from the ashes of a "normal" motoring magazine show. I’m sure a US version would be great….for America. It wouldn’t be Top Gear though – Slippy Lane

+1 Alex – The Stig is, in fact the world’s greatest racing driver robot, which is ironic when you consider that Top Gear’s main "competitor" is Fifth Gear, which is presented by Tiff Needell, a man commonly acknowledged to be the world’s WORST racing driver! :-) – Slippy Lane

Yes, I was watching television on my computer, and not on a TV. I was using a website to watch my shows. Does that make it any less of a TV? Do I really need a “TV” to watch my favorite television shows? TV on the Web? Really? Ohhh yeah, really. How convenient is that?

TidalTV looks much like you would expect a full-on DVR experience to look on a “real” television. The channels available are relatively mainstream. There are more channels available than what you would possibly expect on a service like this. You can search and browse through the different major channels, or even check out their listing of “on demand” shows.

Kat got distracted while researching this site for the blog post. She found out that the Food Network channel is on here, and Paula Deen just happened to be showing at that time. We may have lost her for awhile, y’all. She’s quite addicted to the lovely Paula. Oh no… she just found the Wedding network. Since her daughter is getting married at the end of September, we may not see Kat surface again until after that. After I blogged recently about wanting to try TiVo, I was sent a unit to review for a few weeks. I’ve been wanting to try it out, so this was a great opportunity. With certain software, you can take programs you record on TiVo and transcode them on your computer. You can then turn them into videos you can watch on pretty much any device. All the DVRs I’ve had are boxes unto themselves, they couldn’t be networked in any way. By networking my TiVo, I can then do as I described, to create videos I can play on my computer, iPhone or any other device I wanted to use. Here are a couple of programs you can use to accomplish this.

TiVo Butler is an application that can track programs from multiple TiVo devices that you have on your home network. It’s free, and allows you to browse the recordings you’ve made on your TiVo. You can download them, encode them and much more. TiVo Butler is only available for Mac OS X.

However…

TiVo Playlist is the Windows equivalent. Everything that you could hope to do with your TiVo, you’ll be able to do with ease using TiVo Playlist.

Retrieve TiVo Now Playing lists over an ethernet connection and calculate total recording time and disk space used
Support for multiple TiVo units
Estimate free space remaining given the capacity of the TiVo hard drive(s)
Display either full List View or Folder View
Mouseover Title shows description of recorded show along with Year Released/Air Date, Actors, Director, etc.
View graphical representation of disk free space and space used by either recording status or recording quality
Export of Now Playing lists to CSV files for use in other programs such as Microsoft Excel
Batch downloading of recordings to PC (even from multiple machines)
Tested to run under Windows 2000 and XP Pro and reported to run under Windows 98/ME, XP Home and Vista
Works best at screen sizes 800×600 or larger if running 96dpi, or 1024×768 or larger if running 120dpi
Downloads to FAT32 partitions support up to 4Gb filesizes, NTFS partitions support files > 4Gb (Windows 2000/XP/Vista only)
Access via HTTP/HTTPS and requires TiVo software version 7.1 or newer
