Droid Maker by Michael Rubin

Chris | Live Tech Support | Video Help | Add to iTunes

http://live.pirillo.com/ – Michael Rubin joins me live to talk about his new book Droid Maker. This book delves into the computer division of the Lucas Film making empire. Learn about the birth of some of todays’ most impressive film technology… begun by a group of computer Geeks.

Droid Maker is the three year brainchild from author Michael Rubin. Michael was part of the group who worked many years ago, developing what we now know as Pixar. They also are the pioneers of avatars, online game play, and even digital video editing.

Droid Maker is the inside story of George Lucas, his company, and the work they did to revolutionize the film industry. This book ventures in territory never explored, as Michael reconstructs the events in Hollywood to track the genesis of modern media. This is a compelling story that takes the reader into an era of technological innovation almost completely unknown.

I can’t wait to dive in and read this book myself. I only received it the day of our interview, so I haven’t had a chance yet. But Michaels enthusiasm for his work, combined with my own love of technology, guarantees this is one book I won’t be able to put down.

The Politics of Star Wars

In response to Jeff’s Advice for McCain (which, itself, was a response):

Maybe John McCain is going for the nerd vote with this commercial’s (as you put it) “Star Wars” production values? When you have Darth Vader in your video, it’s almost guaranteed to go viral. Upon watching this particular McCain political ad, I felt compelled to hop into my Landspeeder, float down to the local cantina, and down a few rounds of Jawa Juice with friends.

I used to bullseye womprats in my T-16 back home (Iowa), and that couldn’t have taken any longer than McCain’s video. Personally, I think it’s more reminicent of THX 1138. Then again, I also think that Hilary Clinton looks a lot like Figrin D’an (a Bith) and Barack Obama is totally a Lando Calrissian wannabe.

Maybe it’s just me, but I believe that Jabba the Hutt would make an amazing candidate in this election. Too bad the “Gangsta” party hasn’t been formally recognized yet. You might as well vote for Greedo, the “True Green” candidate – and even then, you’re throwing your vote into the trash compactor.

Is it just me, or does Jeff Jarvis look an awful lot like Obi-Wan Kenobi?

Sy Snootles Didn't Die!

I’m still a Simpsons nerd after all these years. Didn’t really get into ’em until I was a junior, though – when my roomie (Craig McClure) brought home a VHS tape with back-to-back episodes. I happened to catch last night’s episode, although I didn’t devote my full attention to the screen throughout. Before credits rolled, the producers ran a short list of characters who had died in the Star Wars films – including Darth Vader, who was last seen on Thursday’s Daily Show with Jon Stewart (hilarious).

Anyway, one of the fallen names was “Sy Snootles” – lead singer for the Max Rebo Band at Jabba’s palace. But she didn’t die in the film! Unless she was on the sail barge when it went down, there is absolutely no visual record of her death in any of the six Star Wars films. Maybe they were thinking of Oola – rancorpoodoo? I know, I shouldn’t be obsessing about such things on Monday. There are far more important things to worry about, like… Windows Vista, or why people aren’t apparently linking to Robert Scoble?

In other Star Wars news, I’ve got two 50-gallon tubs in the garage filled with excellent-to-mint condition Star Wars figures (still in the packages / boxes). Know anyone who might want ’em? May have to eBay everything, anyway.
