Can you believe that Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and Christmas is but a few weeks away? I was aghast yesterday when I walked into a store that was playing Christmas carols… until I realized what the date was. Holy crap where did the year go? I haven’t even started to think about holiday shopping yet, never mind actually DOING any shopping.

After I had my little panic attack, I sat down to check out what was going on around out community. Low and behold… people are talking about the upcoming festivities. They’re figuring out what to cook with their turkeys, and what the hottest new gifts are for this year. Geez I’m way behind, aren’t I?

I was happy as hell to see that the holidays aren’t the only thing that people are chattering about. Thankfully, I found many interesting and informative blogs and threads on a huge variety of topics to keep me busy… and to get my mind back OFF of the holiday season. I’m just not ready quite yet!

Ok, maybe I don’t know what you did last summer, or even this summer. Now that we’re closing in on back-to-school and Fall, it’s time to start thinking of warmer clothes and holidays already. Yes – some people are already doing their holiday shopping. Stores are putting out winter coats. Before you know it, there will be Halloween decorations and costumes on the shelves.

So… what have you done this summer? Did you even go outside at all? Even the Great Indoorsman headed out a few times, enjoying the sunshine and scenery. Why not share with all of us what you’ve been up to. Did you travel anywhere cool? Did you visit some local outdoor attractions? Surely there is something!!

When you do spend time at home and indoors, hopefully you are spending at least part of that time reading what everyone else has been up to in our community.

Growing up, us boys had awesome holidays. We had many traditions that were sacred to us. I remember going through the catalogs on Thanksgiving Day each year, marking the things that we wanted under the tree on Christmas morning.

What Amazon has done this year is to come up with a very simple and fun way to browse anything and everything you can think of buying (or asking for!) for Christmas. You can search by category or keyword. They have products of all shapes and sizes, for all ages.

No matter what you’re looking for, you’ll get a great idea of what’s new and what’s out there. Heck, I’m already making my list! Are you?

Where do you do your shopping? Do you get in your car, drive to a store, and then physically walk around to make your purchases? Or are you like a growing number of people who prefer to do their shopping online, from the comfort of their own home? It blows me away that some people still don’t understand that the Internet is a giant shopping “mile”.

It’s so nice that I don’t have to run all over the city looking for a specific item. I simply go onto Google and instantly find what I need. You can literally find anything online that you’re looking for, with just a few clicks of your mouse. You don’t have to get dressed, go out, drive somewhere. You don’t have to spend the money for gas, which we all know is wayyyyy over-priced right now. Just choose your time, sit down at your computer, and shop!

The folks in my chat room and I were discussing this, and we came up with a few ideas that could help traditional brick and mortar stores survive in the onslaught of Internet shopping.

Authenticated mobile device checkouts Instead of having to wait in line, you can just type in a few buttons on your mobile device and you’re done. How cool would it be if a real store took PayPal?!
Instant price matching If you haven’t done your research when you walk into the store, you could do a quick search online from your mobile device. Some retailers will tell you they cannot compete with ePricing. They almost have to in order to survive.
Emailing your shopping list, and having it ready when you get there. W00t! How great would that be? It would be so much faster for everyone involved.
Remote inventory checks. This would save us driving across town to a store, only to find out our items are out of stock. It would be great to be able to push a button and find out before I ever leave home if the item I need is available.
On-site customized construction. Let’s say you wanted to have a widget built. Instead of having it online, you could walk into a store and tell them what you want. Then presto! They make whatever it is you want to buy. A great example of this would be those dog-tag station. You drop in your dollars, tell the machine what you want, and it prints the tag for you immediately.

Knowing what software to buy… and when… can be tricky. Here are some tips sent in by a community member to help you with your choices.

Decide whether you really need the software. Software can be expensive and the last thing you want to do is to go out on a whim and waste your money on something that you’re probably only going to use once.
Check compatibility. This is more for less advanced users, I’ve never done it myself but family members have contacted me asking how to get the software to work when there trying to install software for a Mac on a windows machine.
Read reviews etc. Websites claiming their software does something does not necessarily means it does it well, if at all. Third party reviews offer an impartial view and can always help you too understand whether the product is going to work for you or not. (I have found this is a great tip for almost all products I think about buying, not just software)
Make sure your going to be able to use it. By this I mean, it would be no good giving my dad (who is not computer literate) a copy of Photoshop and expecting him to be able to get his money’s worth out of it, make sure the software you buy is within your computer knowledge range.
Search for free alternatives. BY THIS, I DO NOT MEAN ILLEGAL DOWNLOADS! More often than not, the features of an expensive software package can be equalled by freeware. If you search around a little bit you can probably find many or at least 1 package that can match even the greatest and most expensive software.

Have you ever had questions while shopping in a Radio Shack, or similar store? Did the employees know the answers? Here are some secrets about stores like this that I bet you didn’t know, sent in by an anonymous Radio Shack employee.

If there is an item you wish to buy that is not carried in-store, visit the Radio Shack website. Many times, the item(s) can be bought and delivered to your local store, saving you the cost of shipping. The same holds true when buying “online only” items.
Even if the store has excellent customer reviews… check into purchasing a service plan. Something many people do not know is that you can return to a store within two weeks of purchase to get the service plan after all. If you don’t buy it during the original purchase, you can always return. Also, you can call the Radio Shack 800# yourself for techincal assistance. It’s the same number a Radio Shack employee would call for help if you took your item in to be fixed. Save yourself some time, and make that call from home.
When buying a new cellular phone or service, check at your local Radio Shack. Believe it or not, you can often get the same cell phone at a much lesser price than you will find anywhere else.

After the posting of this blog, I received the following email. It is something I think you all need to see.

I work for Radio Shack. We recently got a new District Manger. He wants us to have full time employees and two part time employees in my store. One guy was switched to full time. In the meantime, I only get three hours per week… total. Instead of getting rid of the new kid, they fired the guy who has been working in the store the longest… right in front of everyone. Even though I wasn’t fired, I will be forced to quit to find something with more hours. The Radio Shack corporation doesn’t fire people unless they do something horribly wrong or illegal. Instead, they make working conditions impossible, causing you to leave voluntarily. After working for them for a few years, I believe their corporation to be a disgrace. They sell things like audio wire at the astronomical price of $32.99, when they only pay just under $4.00 for it.
They create a condition where we as employees are forced to manipulate the minds of the buyer into thinking that a particular product is great, and in order for it to work… you have to buy all these extra things to make it work. Most of their products are actually “old”, believe it or not… they are mostly an outlet store anymore. You will rarely see the newest computers in Radio Shack. The models are usually at least a year old. Also, the products tend to not be what they say. A Gold contact isn’t even gold anymore. It is just a cheap gold coating. Inside is the same thing wire you originally had on say your tv. Yet, the Sales Associates are forced to tell you that their “gold wire” will give you much higher quality on your television. Face it, folks. This is the SAME wire you would use if you bought a standard red and white 12 foot AV cable at the local WalMart.
I have worked for this company for a long time, so I know what I’m talking about. Once I have left here for good, I will never step foot inside a Radio Shack again.

Chris P writes: “I have worked in a supermarket for a number of years. I have seen a lot of people come into the store in a good mood… and leave in a bad one! Here are my top 5 tips for a easy and stress-free shopping trip.”

Know the busy and quiet times of a store. this can help you have a quicker shop, and less people to get in the way. If you go during the busy times, it will almost certainly lead to stress during your shopping… for a number of reasons.
Be prepared. There’s nothing worse than if you are on a monthly shopping budget, than to go into a supermarket with out a shopping list or idea of what you want.Creating a list… whether it be on your PDA, or a piece of paper… can save you from those impulse buys that stores strive for, thus saving you money.
Try to be in a good mood! The cashiers have been sitting there all day, doing the same thing. It gets repetitive. In most cases, the casher will be polite to you. Be polite back! This will not only make your checkout experience a lot better… it will also improve the cashers mood, causing less mistakes!
Choose the right cart. If you have a small cart or a basket you cant fit much in them, meaning you have to buy less items. Having a big cart makes you want to fill it, or tempts you to buy more than you normally would have.
Do you really need to go shopping and spend more hard-earned cash? Make sure you actually need to go shopping. Whats in your cabinets and fridge? In most cases, you can have enough food in the house without actually going shopping for more!

Finally, the holiday season is coming to a close and I can give my wallet a well deserved rest. The holiday season is hectic, it’s filled with about a month of spending more money than you actually want, and receiving tons of stuff you may not actually want. But since it’s all over now, and the panic attacks have subsided, I want to know, where did you do your shopping?

In the digital age we live in, you can complete your shopping within a couple hours just by visiting amazon and a handful of other sites (not to mention you can do this from work when your boss isn’t looking). There are also the more traditional folk who prefer to duke it out with everyone else at the brick and mortar stores. So which one are you?

A lot of people finished all their holiday shopping before hand (we call these people ‘the smart ones’), be it on black friday or some other time before the holidays, but most likely you spent the last couple weeks or days scrambling to pickup presents.

Christmas shopping can be a nightmare, it’s true. I have here some tips for you to make your shopping experience much easier. Don’t forget… if you’re shopping online, be sure to check out my blog for all kinds of great coupons and deals to save you money!

Very early in the morning, and two hours before closing, are the best times to shop. The stores are generally less busy then, and you won’t have to fight crowds… or wait in long lines.
Have your money or Debit/Credit card ready. Don’t get suckered into applying for a store credit card, just to “save 10% today”. You may be shocked later at terms, rates and conditions you weren’t expecting. Don’t apply for these cards unless it is for a store you frequently shop at, and then only after you check into all the hidden fees and such.
Digging for small change or your Debit card makes the cashier and the customers behind you mad. If you still use paper checks… start filling it out before you even get to the head of the line. This saves you time… as well as everyone else.
Your digital camera does not say on it anywhere what type of SD card it uses. Don’t go into the electronics department, and say “I have a Casio camera, and I need a card for it”. The clerks will have no idea what you need. Write the card type down off of your old one, or from your user’s manual for your camera.
If you are buying an item of clothing that doesn’t have a bar code or tags on it, be sure to grab another size (of the same item) to take to the register with you. This will save everyone a load of time, because the cashier will not have to call for the department to find the item and bring it to her/him to scan.
BONUS TIP!! If there is an item in your cart that you decided not to buy after all, give it directly to the cashier, instead of throwing it on some random shelf. Not only will this save the employee’s time, it will be easier for the customer who DOES want it to find it. Also… it’s just plain courteous.

Buying a computer monitor isn’t an easy task. There is more to consider than just how big it is. Bigger isn’t *always* better. Here are some tips for you to help when you’re thinking of purchasing a new monitor.

Hi Chris, its Mool from the chat, and here are my top five tips for buying a new monitor :)
Know what you want. Your choice of monitor should depend on what you are doing. While LCD monitors tend to be larger and thinner (obviously), they sometimes lack respond time and overall quality of image. if you are a gamer, you may have to dish out a few extra bucks to get a monitor that is big but also can suit your graphical and speed needs. If you are just a generic user, and don’t do all the graphical stuff, you can sacrifice some resolution and speed, although i wouldn’t recommend dropping off too much quality in your choice, as you may wind up liking your old CRT monitor better.
Bigger isn’t always better. You may think when buying a monitor nowadays is all about size, but your wrong. The bigger you go, the more graphical power you are going to need, and sometimes the resolution suffers. Find the balance between size and resolution that works best for you and your style.
Brand names aren’t always the way to go. When going to buy things like computers and accessories, people tend to stay with big names, which isn’t always necessary. Small name companies usually have cheaper equipment, and it usually isn’t that far below brand-name qualities. You can get a larger, nicer generic monitor for the same price as a smaller, slightly higher resolution monitor from a brand name company.
Make sure your graphics card can support the monitor. This is probably the most important thing to do before you go out and make a purchase, as if you have a lower intensity graphics card, the larger monitors will not get up to the full resolution allowed. I made this mistake and now I have a 22″ monitor on second best settings, which isn’t bad, but could be much better. You want to get the best resolution set for your computer, so you aren’t stuck with blurry text and pixelated images.
Research before you buy. Before you go and honk out a couple hundred dollars for a new screen, read reviews submitted by people who have bought it before you. These reviews can have vital information on glitches in the product, or problems that have happened to them. You can find these reviews on many of the sites you may purchase these from, like Best Buy or Circuit City, whom i have personally seen to let customers write their own reviews. if you cant find it on any of those sites, use your google-fu and there is sure to be some one to have written a review on it.

Holiday shopping is stressful. We always want to be the one to get the perfect gift for every person on our list. I know you’re busy making lists, checking them twice, shopping, wrapping and bow’ing (is that a word?!) everything… but take time out to read these tips to getting that perfect gift this year.

Don’t buy something YOU want, and then give it to someone else. Keep the person you’re buying for in mind. Don’t just think “omg I would LOVE that”… and assume the recipient would love it as well.
If you give a gift card, make sure it has the right features. Check to be sure there’s no expiration date, and that it can be used in-store or online. Also, you might want to look into something like the pre-paid AmericanExpress cards. These can be used anywhere AmericanExpress is accepted, thus are more versatile.
If you buy clothing, don’t forget the gift receipt. It’s impossible to judge the right size, color and shape. That’s why I personally stay away from buying clothes. Matter of fact, make sure you get a gift receipt for *everything* you buy. You never know when it’s wrong, or defective.
Keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be expensive in order to make someone very happy. You don’t need to break the bank. Pay attention to the person throughout the year, the hints and ideas. Keep them in mind, and make your gift thoughtful and from the heart. Trust me, it will be well received.
Always give batteries with gifts that require them. There’s nothing more frustrating than receiving the perfect gift… only to find you don’t have batteries for it!

Today, I went shopping online to purchase the new Casio camera that is being touted as the “YouTube camera”. It encodes videos to the format used by YouTube, saving me a step or two in my recording process. I did a lot of research into finding the best price, and came across a website I wanted you to know about.

On ClayValet, you can submit up to five free requests per week. ClayValet is a personal shopping service. They can give advice, find you deals, and recommend the best products. Simply tell them what you’re looking for, and they’ll do the work for you.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: always do your research. Turn to the people in your circle, whether that is family and close friends, or on social networking sites. Shawn from TechWebLog.net sent me his top 5 tips for Christmas and holiday shopping. Reading through the list, these are all excellent things to keep in mind at any time of the year.

Get an Extended Warranty. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had an electrical product fail due to poor quality or excessive use. If a warranty isn’t offered where you are shopping, walk away. Chances are, another store or merchant will offer one.
Have patience. If the product is not in stock, don’t settle for something that isn’t exactly what you want. The store may get another shipment in within the next few days, or you may find it at another retailer. You can also ask a sales clerk or manager if they have some in “the back” that hasn’t hit the shelf yet. Sometimes, that actually does work!
Ask about the return policy. It happens all the time. People get a duplicate gift, the wrong size, or the wrong color/style. Make sure the store you are buying from has a return policy, and what it is. Do they give store credit? What about an even exchange for wrong sizing? How difficult will it be for the gift recipient to exchange? Always ask for a gift receipt, as well. Many stores now only give credit at the lowest sale price within the last 90 days. If you paid $60.00 for something, and it went on sale the next week for $30.00… the person would only get a $30.00 credit upon return without that gift receipt.
Shop around. Check sale ads for various stores, and even on their websites. You may find much better prices at a store three blocks away, than at your normal shopping haunt. You should also always consider checking for online coupons and deals to save even more money.
Do your homework. Search through blogs, reviews and posts around the Internet. Make sure that the majority of people are happy with the product you are planning to buy. Check to see if there are a lot of negatives, such as missing pieces and parts, shoddy workmanship, or the like.

I think you missed out on your Five Tech Shopping Tips. It really should have been Six Tips. Here’s the Sixth (and some say the most important!)-
Always read the fine print when you’re buying, be it new or used!
Before you plop down the plastic, read up on all the things you’d rather ignore. That includes return policies, DOA returns and or exchanges, price protection, etc… There have been more tears shed over a sniveling return policy with a monstrous restocking charge than those shed because someone bought something they simply wanted. Personally, I’d rather be sorry for busting the budget over an excellent product than working hard to buy something at the absolute lowest price, only to be tortured by a rat in vendor’s clothing.
