href="http://chris.pirillo.com/drew-olanoff-my-cancer-is-social-at-gnomedex/">Drew Olanoff will all be blowing out candles today. Now, normally I’d say a simple “Happy Birthday!” and be done with it. However, realizing today is Drew’s birthday gave me pause, and made me think…

Six months ago, Drew completely sure what his future held. He was diagnosed with cancer back in May, and the fight began. He finished up his last Chemo treatment a week ago, and the doctors have given him the awesome news that his tumors are gone. He is free of that stupid disease, hopefully forever. He continues his fight against Cancer, with the support of many thousands of people… including <a

For every follower – up to one million – that Drew gets prior to midnight on New Year’s Eve, he will donate one more dollar. How cool is that?

Thinking about all of this, and Drew O’s birthday, kind of puts life into perspective a little, eh? It makes one remember to stop and be thankful for what we have… right here, right now. It makes us want to push ourselves a little harder to do the things we promised ourselves we would do. It makes us want to reach out and tell those we care about that we do, in fact, love them.

Cancer touches everyone. EVERYONE. In some way or another, your life will be affected by Cancer at some point. Even though Drew’s personal fight may have come to an end, the war has only begun. Windows update detected a graphics card update and installed it. Suddenly, Vince no longer has his native resolution option for his monitor.

Vince normally ran at a 1280×720 resolution. For some odd reason, this is no longer available. He’s wondering whether he should just stay with the lower resolution, or roll back the driver to the earlier version. Dude, don’t stay with it! LCD monitors were designed to run at one resolution… and one only. If you run them at anything lower, your picture won’t be as clear. There are a couple of things you can try:

1. Check the Gateway site to see if there are any newer updates for your monitor. Yes… I said your monitor. Not your graphics card. The information needed to detect your resolution comes from the monitor’s .inf files, not from your graphics card. Those are two separate things. Now, I’m not saying it could NOT have happened, and I’m not saying that the updates or Vista aren’t to blame. It’s hard to tell at this point.

2. If you have the CD for the monitor that came with the computer, try reinstalling that. The needed .inf files could somehow be corrupted or missing.

3. If neither of these work, then I would definitely try rolling back the update. Your monitor needs to be running at the resolution it was designed for.

Want to embed this video into your blog? href="http://chris.pirillo.com">Chris Pirillo

KOMO-TV and its owner, Fisher Communications, has graciously agreed to serve as host for a blogger meet-up at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday August 2nd. The event will be at Fisher Plaza, 140 Fourth Avenue North in downtown Seattle. Light hors d’oeuvres and refreshments (alcoholic and otherwise) will be served and everyone who attends is promised a cool piece (or pieces) of KOMO swag. That’s right; we’re digging deep for this.

This is a social event, so come prepared to meet and make new friends. If you know of a local blogger who’s not on the list here, please let me know or feel free to invite them, too. We’d like to meet everybody.

KOMO-TV is interested in getting to know bloggers in the area, and what better way to do that than with a little party? Again, this is a social event; there’s no agenda for the station other than helping facilitate this meet-up. Fisher Communications recognizes the significance of the personal media revolution, and they want to listen and pay attention to what you’re saying. I think this is a good way to start.

KOMO-TV news anchors will be there, so don’t forget to bring your camera! You’ll also be able to take pictures of yourself (and your co-anchors) at the anchor desk.

Please use the RSVP function of this Evite to let us know if you’re coming. We want to make sure we have enough food for everybody. If you have any questions about this event, feel free to contact Leanne Dillon from KOMO-TV at (206) 404-6055.

We should all use “komomeetup” as the tag for photos, videos, blog posts, etc.
Chris Pirillo

Heh. Even the manufacturers don’t want to deal with Windows Vista. From day one, I’ve been complaining about NVIDIA’s lackluster support for the big “V” – being lucky enough to capture desktop quirkiness now and again to prove that it’s not PEBKAC (see my YouTube videos). If you have a laptop with Windows Vista, you may be in even bigger trouble:

Microsoft Windows Vista has been out now for more than 6 months. At first ATI was praised for supporting Vista and Nvidia was criticized for not supporting their products. Quietly however ATI and Nvidia has not been providing drivers for mobility/Go customers. I can hear you saying “You’re Kidding Right” nope but I wish I was.

When all else fails, pass the buck and/or blame the user:

We sent off several e-mails to Microsoft seeking their response to ATI and Nvidia’s lack of support for their latest version of Windows and received only default statements or nothing at all. It seems that Microsoft’s response is a lack of response which does make sense. Vista is without a doubt aimed at providing greater visual feedback to users. The interface itself is much more fluid and the capability for things like Dreamscene in Ultimate and Aero in versions starting with Premium certainly do add to the overall user experience. It seems likely that Microsoft’s lack of comment could very well help them sell more copies of Vista to ATI Mobility and Nvidia Go owners that find themselves unable to upgrade or update their systems and are forced to purchase new laptops. Once again Microsoft is pushing upgrading and new hardware purchases like a drug dealer with their latest designer drug. While we feel that this practice is wholly irresponsible and ethically incorrect we cannot deny that it is also the nature of the computer industry.

Microsoft has recently come under fire for the severe shortage of Windows Vista “Ultimate” add-ons, so this video driver news comes to no surprise to many of us. The WDDM (Windows Display Driver Model) is completely new, and I’m guessing that it’s costing ATI and NVIDIA more than it’s gaining them. Could take a couple more years to straighten out the entire ecosystem…<ul
