Even if you’re not a blogger yourself, chances are you read a few of them. It seems like everyone is blogging these days, including my mom on occasion (so ok, maybe not recently). Heck, even when you aren’t intending to read a blog, you may end up doing so after following a link from a search engine when you’re looking for something specific. Let’s face it – blogs are everywhere.

Obviously, blogging is a central part of my life. The work I do here plays a large part in not only my work life, but my personal one, as well. I like to think I’ve found a good balance between the two, and try to keep them as “equal” as possible here on my site. My friend Robert Scoble is the same way. If you go through his blog, you’ll see that he also has managed to balance life/work/family, and wrap it all nicely into his blog.

To me, that’s the way a blog should be. I’ve seen people who have several different blogs. They may post work-related things to one, personal to another, and social things to yet another. Where’s the sense in that? Why can you not post everything in one central place? Both Robert and I – along with many, MANY others, have managed to do so. If you have more than one blog, why do you? I would like to hear from some of you “multi-bloggers”, and hear your reasons as to why you do things the way you do. Understand that I’m not putting down the way you do things. I honestly feel that maybe I am missing something, and not seeing the whole picture.

In any case, blogs are important. They can be a source of information. They can keep you current on what’s hot – and what’s not. They can give you different viewpoints on matters that you may not have otherwise thought of. And, they can make you laugh. So, I ask you…

How do reading blogs impact your life? For the blogs you go back to time and again, what attracts you? Is it the content itself, or the author’s writing style? Are you gaining information, educating yourself, or just having a good laugh? What types of blogs do you subscribe to – and how many of them?

Why did media companies miss the boat on the web? They haven’t always valued the input from their own technology folks on staff. That’s changing as the web is becoming an important source for news and information. So now local newspapers, radio stations and TV stations are hoping that a new breed of “hacker journalists” can help them out by having experience in coding and also understanding journalism issues.

Mark Glaser is a longtime freelance journalist whose career includes columns on hip-hop, reviews of video games, travel stories, and humor columns that poked fun at the titans of technology. From 2001 to 2005, he wrote a weekly column for USC Annenberg School of Communication’s Online Journalism Review, and he still writes the OPA Intelligence Report email newsletter for the Online Publishers Association. Glaser has written essays for Harvard’s Nieman Reports and the website for the Yale Center for Globalization.

Glaser has written columns on the Internet and technology for the Los Angeles Times, CNET and HotWired, and has written features for the New York Times, Conde Nast Traveler, Entertainment Weekly, the San Jose Mercury News, and many other publications. He was the lead writer for the Industry Standard’s award-winning “Media Grok” daily email newsletter during the dot-com heyday, and was named a finalist for a 2004 Online Journalism Award in the Online Commentary category for his OJR column.

OmniDragon read an article on CNET, which explains how Starbucks might ban laptops in their stores – because people come in there, buy a coffee, and sit on their computers (using the Internet for hours and hours at a time). He scribbled this:

I got to thinking about what you said last year during Gnomedex. I think it was on Twitter? Something like: “I wish everyone would put their laptops down and talk to each OTHER!” How is it possible that this machine is hindering me from communicating with other people? It’s my comfort zone. This is my TV, my radio, my telephone, my magazine, my newspaper, my IM client, my chat… my megaphone. When you’re in an auditorium listening to someone on stage with a microphone, you don’t need your megaphone. All you need is your brain. Maybe what helps people think is distracting themselves with something else?

During my trips around the community today, I was sighing heavily when I came across a few new spammers on Geeks. I had to ban the members, and delete their comments. I know you all get just as tired as I do of having to look past the spam to get to anything worth reading. However – get past it I do. This screen saver is called MappedUp. If you’re using either Windows or OS X, you can use it, just like I do. It will not only alert you to news as it’s happening – it will also show you where it’s happening!

MappedUp continuously tracks several RSS news feeds. These are shown on the World map as either red or yellow dots. A red dot means that the feed was very recently updated. A yellow dot means it hasnt’ been updated for awhile. By hovering your mouse over a dot, you can read the title of an article. By clicking the title, you can go to the website to read the full story.

MappedUp is free to use, and you don’t have to sign up. However, if you sign up (still free), you can customize which feeds you want to have displayed on your map… and even choose specific tags you want the feeds to look for.

This isn’t just another boring news source. It’s interactive, cool and fun! It’s a great way to get all of the latest news delivered to your desktop without boring you to tears. You are in control of what news you get, and when (or if!) you choose to read it.

Some members of Ignite Seattle recently appeared at Gnomedex 8.0 to give their short and informative talks to our conference attendees. Monica is a news reporter, and spoke to us about the ways we can all become better news, blog and even forum commenters.

A product of her wired generation, Mónica obsesses over her Facebook profile and can’t remember what life was like before e-mail. She plays on the P-I’s flag football team and calls it a good afternoon when she can tinker with her piano and her Ibanez guitar — and a good evening when she can get out and enjoy the nightlife. A huge film fan, Mónica will often cry at movies people have no business crying in. She can’t cook, but she’s trying.

According to Monica, the Internet has some amazing things for news. One of the things it’s done that is awesome is to make news about the conversation. If people are smart about this, they know they need to take as much responsibility for the quality of the conversation as they do for the quality of news they provide. This means providing the right tools for community moderation, having enough resources to police that community, and that we need your help.

Face it, a lot of comments just suck. They’re angry, or abusive. It’s important to come together, and really integrate what the community has to say. What should you, as a commenter, think about before you comment?

• Think of the impact of what you’re going to say before you say it. If you jump into a conversation about a hot topic, be careful. Being an angry commenter will do you no good, and no one will listen to you. Ignore the trolls. Focus on something smart in the story or post, and comment about that.
• Tell us what you think. You’d be surprised how many people tell us what they think without thinking. Think about the issue. Read the story. Know what you really think and feel… and THEN comment.
• Tell us your story. Maybe the author didn’t get to your story… quote yourself. Tell your side or perspective of a story if you were somehow involved, and it will expand the story as a whole.
• Tell us what you know. Many journalists think they’re really smart. One thing you can do is to put up a study, share a link… whatever will help flesh the story out even more. Just do so with respect. What this does is to bring heads together, which is always better than one.
• The most important thing you can do when leaving a comment is to ask a question. It will keep the conversation going, and you may learn something new. Ask a good question. Explain yourself, and people will do their best to answer.
• Even if a site doesn’t ask you to identify yourself, you still should. Own up to your ideas. Be accountable for what you say.

Everything Monica had to say rings true to me, as a Blogger. I especially love this line: “Many people tell us what they think without actually thinking”. She hit the nail on the head there. Think about what you’re going to write, people. Know what you really think, and believe in it.

Now that I’m finding my way around on my new Wii, I am having a great time discovering everything I can do with it. Did you know, for example, that you can get your local news… right on your Wii? I haven’t even played a video game yet, because I’m too entranced by everything else it can do. I found out about getting my weather on the Wii… and now I’ve connected to the news!

Part of the news feature on the Wii is something I could run 24/7 on my screen. This way I could look over at any given time to catch the latest headlines. The Wii displays the news in a very dynamic way. I can go in and dive into a specific area of the news if I choose… such as World news, local news, Technology or even Life. I can simply go in there, and view the newest headlines in that particular section.

Internet Channel changes the way you surf the net forever. No more hunching over your computer. Just download the Opera browser for just 500 Wii Points and within minutes, you’ll be a professional sofa surfer, pointing-and-clicking your way around the web with your Wii Remote. Opera supports Adobe Flash and JavaScript so you can even watch movies on your favorite video sites!
Control the Internet Channel with your Wii Remote. Scroll through sites with either the +Control Pad or the B Button and click on a link by pointing to it and hitting the A Button. Text too small? Video too big? Zoom in and out of the browser with the + (plus) and – (minus) Buttons.
The search button is right on the start page, so you can quickly look up anything you just saw on TV.
