One of the first pieces of hardware I ever remember lusting after was a cassette player. I was pretty young back then, and a cassette player was innovative! As I got a little older, making “mix tapes” for girls you liked was all the rage. I enjoyed being able to record things, and play them back. These days, we take audio and video recording for granted. Back then… it was really high tech stuff!

I still have several of my old cassettes. I want to start archiving those memories into MP3 format, so that I can save them. There’s a few different ways that you can accomplish this, using various pieces of hardware. The folks at ThinkGeeksent me something that will help me do this easily… the ION USB Cassette Deck. It works with either Windows or Mac OS X, and comes with its own software. I have to warn you, though. Even though the hardware is an excellent device, I don’t recommend using the software. It’s not so great.

It’s a dual cassette deck of sorts. You can dub from one deck to another. Or, I can use a USB connection and play it back on my computer… and record it from there if I wish. I recommend downloading the free version of Audacity in order to record and edit your audio files.

Pop open the cassette deck and throw your tape in. I still have the first cassette I ever purchased – Twisted Sister. Tell me you remember the song “We’re Not Gonna Take It”. It’s a classic that’s still played often today! Hey… I loved them back in the day. What’s wrong with liking the song now?!

The ION features LED Audio Level Indicators to let you know when it detects music on one side or the other. The “A” deck is for cassette playback only. The “B” deck can be used to play and record. Copy your music from one cassette to another at regular OR high-speed. There are several nifty little add-ons for all of you cassette junkies!

I do like this gadget, and will be using it quite a bit. I am having a great time going down memory lane and putting faces, names and memories with each song on the tapes.

This is the next in our series of screencasts recorded by people in our community! You can always submit your own, you know. I’m still looking for more good screencasters! Daniel has created this short tutorial for us, to show us how to easily remove the vocals from any song using the free Audacity software.

Open up your song in Audacity. In that top box, click the small drop-down arrow, and choose “Split Stereo Track”. Once it has split into two panes, go to the top of the Audacity window and click “Effect”, and then “Invert”.

Once it has finished, go back to that bottom pane, and click on the drop-down arrow there. Choose “Mono”. Select the top track and repeat the procedure, choosing “Mono” there, as well.

Once you have done this, you’ll notice that the vocals aren’t nearly as prominent. It doesn’t remove it completely, but it does lessen the strength of the voice so that you can easily sing over it, using the edited track for Karaoke purposes.

My mouth hit the floor when I read the title of this thread earlier on Geeks. A drawback to being a Geek – what?! Are you kidding me? Being a Geek is the best possible thing to be. We have it all – brains, looks, girls… what more could we want? The looks, well, just because they are funny looks at times means nothing. It’s just part of the total package that makes us so amazingly perfect, right? And the girls – ahhh, the girls – we all know that Geek boys get all the girls, right? Wait, what? You have trouble finding a girlfriend? Well, perhaps if you showered more often, and stopped being so nervous around the fairer sex. Fine. The looks and the girls may be lacking. But we have the brains! And the brains get us the money! And the money gets us more Geeky gadgets! Who needs girls, anyway?

Ok, time to get serious here, my fellow Geeks. Do you actually feel there are drawbacks to being a Geek? I’m interested in hearing your answers. For me – life is good when you’re a Geek. I’m comfortable with who, what and how I am… and I wouldn’t have it any other way. But I know that not everyone would agree, so let’s have it.

iNudge is probably the coolest new website I’ve come across in quite awhile. You can make a composition of music on your own, and share it with others. You might remember when I demonstrated my Tenori-On awhile back. iNudge is very similar, only it’s online – and free!

iNudge is so easy to play with. Select 1 of 8 different Sound Patterns from the small Matrixes icons. Use your mouse to draw notes on each 16 Step Matrix. For each Pattern, adjust Volume, Mute, Clear, or set Audio Pan from Left to Right. Click on the Tempo numbers and click up or down to change the overall Tempo.

Once you have created your masterpiece, you can easily share it with others. If you click “get and share”, it allows you to send the link to your music by email, or get an embed code to spread around in various communities you may be a member of!

I’m no musician by any stretch of the imagination. But, I love to make music!

8 Tips For Buying a Guitar Online

Today’s younger generation may have a hard time believing this, but there really was a time when cell phones, PC’s, pagers, texting, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and the Internet, didn’t exist! Back in those pre-historic times, buying a guitar was a much simpler affair. It was also much more limited.

You typically had to go to the local music store to find something you liked, or look for a used guitar in the newspaper classifieds.

Nowadays, a guitar purchase normally begins with a Google search. In an instant, you’re faced with a couple million pages of dealers, stats, figures, prices, opinions, reviews, forums and ceaseless babble.

Then the next several hours (days…weeks…months) are spent sifting through this endless mountain of information. Prices are compared, reviews are read, forums are monitored, specs are memorized.

And the fact is, having all this information available to make an informed decision is a really good thing. Back in the day, all we had to go on was the “feel” of the guitar when we put it in our hands, and the sound it made when we played it.

But wait a minute…aren’t those pretty important issues when buying a guitar?

Keep in mind that, by nature, every guitar is unique. If you take ten guitars of the same model, made in the same factory, on the same day – each one is going to “feel” a little different. Each one will have its own individual response to your hands as you play it. This simple fact should not be ignored when choosing your new axe.

Here are some things to consider when shopping for a guitar online.

1. Do the research. Exercise some due diligence. Check out the reviews and forums. Compare pricing.

2. Consider the style of music you are playing and look at guitars that are suitable for that style. If you’re playing heavy grunge metal, a hollow body ES-335 might not be your best option, even though it “looks” cool.

3. Go to some music stores and actually “lay hands” on the guitar you are leaning toward. There is no substitute for seeing how it feels when you play it.

4. If you do find a guitar in a music store that is a perfect fit, one that feels “just right”, remember that you may never find another one of the same model that fits or plays that well.

Consider buying it from the store before it gets away. Music stores have had to become very competitive with their online counterparts, so take some ads from online dealers and see if the store will match or beat, the price. Also, don’t neglect the value of in-store service, it may even be worth paying a few more dollars for this one aspect alone.

5. Carefully research the online dealer’s return policy. Most have a liberal amount of time to check out a guitar before returning it. But also look closely at any re-stocking fees that may eat into your wallet.

6. Check the guitar out thoroughly when it arrives. Look for scratches, nicks and dings. Yours may very well be a guitar that has already been returned once before. Make sure all the paperwork and warranty info is included.

7. Research the dealer. There are a number of well known, reputable online dealers out there – such as Musicians Friend, Same Day Music, Music123 etc. – but there are some shady characters out there as well. Let the buyer beware!

8. Don’t look back. Once you have purchased the guitar of your dreams – the one that melts like butter in your hands – resist the urge to look around for a better deal. You can drive yourself crazy thinking you got screwed because some other dealer ran a sale on your guitar and you could’ve saved five bucks somewhere else. It’s not worth it. Spend your time playing guitar!

Shopping for a guitar today is much more interesting than it was “back in the day” – even though you might get frazzled with information overload.

But keep one important thing in mind. Even though all this information is available at your finger tips, the only way to truly decide on a guitar is with your finger tips!

Different types of dance seemed to be a common theme today when I was browsing around on both Lockergnome and Geeks. We had blog titles with the words Jitterbug, Rhumba and Cha-Cha in them! Don’t tell me Geeks can’t get their groove on! I happen to know for a fact that while I myself cannot dance, many of you can! My friend Andy, for instance, is an accomplished Swing and Ballroom dancer… and he’s a hard-core coder! How do you like those apples?

Can you dance? Do you just shake it in time to the music, or can you do fancy steps with difficult names? Do you step on your partner’s feet, or are you a regular Fred Astaire (or Ginger Rogers!)? Let’s hear it… we promise not to laugh!

You can’t hear the music playing in my head, because it’s not easy to share. It is easy to share music on the Internet, via legal downloads, music subscriptions, or even via Internet radio. How do you listen to your music online? What do you use for Internet radio? I’m sure you use a computer. But what if you didn’t have to use a computer?

Using a Livio, you don’t need a computer to be able to listen to your favorite artists online. The Livio Radio, featuring Pandora, goes beyond making more than 11,000 free Internet radio stations easily accessible anywhere you, a power source and a Wi-Fi connection should meet. Pandora is your personal DJ; Enter the name of an artist or song and start listening; Give songs a Thumb Up or Thumb Down and Pandora will instantly change the music selection to better match your tastes.

You will, of course, need an Internet connection. It can connect either wirelessly or via a wired connection. It’s simple to get started and use, and it’s much smaller than a standard laptop. The Livio connects right to your Pandora account. Pandora will create a radio “station” around the type of music that you like, based on a song or artist that you enter. You don’t need a Pandora account in order to use your Livio, so don’t worry!

The speaker is pretty decent – much better than what you’d expect! It has a remote control, and of course the thumbs up and thumbs down buttons. Wouldn’t you like a normal radio or computer to have those?!

Makana: The Real Guitar Hero

Thanks to my connections in Hawaii, I was able to meet, interview, and watch Makana. If you’ve never heard of him before, I’m guessing this song will hook you for life.

A student of the late slack key master Sonny Chillingworth, Makana has been playing for audiences since he was 13 years old. Starting at Duke’s Canoe Club in 1993, Makana has traveled to festivals and venues around the world from Japan to England, across the United States and always at home in Hawaii. Makana’s gift of music resonates the feeling of Aloha, infusing elements of folk, rock, blues, jazz, bluegrass, rage and with roots in the tradition of slack key, his sound is truly unique and powerful. He has opened and played with artists all over the World, including Santana and Sting!

When I interviewed him, Makana couldn’t help but laugh at the way his name comes up in a Google search. Please don’t confuse him with that place in Hawaii, ok? They’re nowhere near the same!

Makana has been playing slack key for 20 years now, which is amazing. Slack key guitar is a style, such as Flamenco or Blues. It is Hawaii style… they slack the strings, and loosen the keys so the guitar is tuned to a chord. The guitar is holding the chord for him. He can then have a chord, a rhythm and a melody going all at the same time… making it sound like a symphony of sorts.

Makana says that when he first started playing, it was something that was fun and people loved to listen to. He never thought to the future, or dreamed he would have the career that he does. He’s opened at concerts such as No Doubt and Jason Mraz. He takes the roots of Hawaiian music, and goes far beyond it. It’s more universal than the traditional slack key.

The new CD comes out on August 18th, titled Venus & the Sky Turn to Clay: the Instrumental World Of Makana. It’s a completely original album, full of beautiful guitar solos… electric, acoustic and even 12-string. An interesting note: the title of the album is written from right to left on the CD (instead of the traditional left to right) since that is the way that Venus rotates.

If you’re not a fan after listening to this song and watching the interview, then you must be sleeping under a rock. Makana is not only a very talented musician – he’s also a great guy.

How do you discover new music? Don’t sit there and tell me you only like one type of music. You can’t just stop at some point in your life and decide you don’t want to listen to anything new. One thing I like about Pandora is that I can give it a specific genre or artist, and they’ll help me discover other artists that may be similar. I got an email from TJ recently who shared with us his top 5 list of ways to discover new music.

Find out who your favorite artists consider to be their inspirations. Chances are, you’re going to enjoy listening to them, as well. It’s easy to go online and find a biography of musicians you like. Those will usually include a list of names of the people who inspired them.
Listen to a lot of music on the radio, last.fm, or any other service. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard a song on the radio that I liked, and wrote it down quickly to find later and purchase for my own collection. I tend to turn the radio to stations I might not normally listen to. That helps me broaden my scope, and allows me to find music I love that I might otherwise never have heard.
Get out and listen to local musicians. We musicians love all the followers we can get. Getting out and hearing them is always fun, and they love your support!
Join music-related forums. You’ll be exposed to so many different types of music that you may not have even heard of! Read what others are saying. If they’re raving about a new artist or song – check it out for yourself!
Trade music with others. I remember when I used to trade CDs with a good friend of mine. Just that summer alone, I was able to discover a ton of new things that I hadn’t heard before. I went from having only about 100 songs in my collection to more than 5000.

This same thing happened to me back in college. I traded CDs with a friend of mine. The name of a particular band was strange, but I gave it a chance. Turns out, I loved their music! By sharing the cassette tape with my friend, it turned me on to a whole new style of music… which turned into sales for the artist.

I want to consume music as I want to consume it. I’d rather “rent” the music, instead of owning it. That’s why I subscribe to Rhapsody’s service. I can pull up and listen to whatever I want, when I want it.

So my question again is “how do you discover new music”?

You probably have hundreds – if not thousands – of photos on your computer. You likely also have tons of other files sitting there, as well. How do you share those files with others? Let’s kick it up a notch, and say you have a calendar, tasks and contacts to keep in sync. How do you keep all this data in sync with each other? The answer is software – which is sadly usually expensive.

I have an all-in-one workspace solution for you! Tonido is an open personal web application platform that runs on your desktop which safeguards your privacy and online freedom. It allows you to run your own personal web applications on your desktop and form your own private Tonido network. Applications and data are always local.

I may not pronounce the name right, but I will tell you this is completely awesome. It’s easy to set up, and it’s cross-platform. It’s also open source! This isn’t interesting to you if you’re off in your own little world and never interact with anyone else. But the moment you need to share a document or picture with someone else… BAM! Tonido saves the day.

I’m a little excited, yes. I’ve been waiting for something like this to appear. It’s one thing to share a file… but it’s a step beyond when you can share contacts, calendars and more as well! Normally, something like this would be hard to use and expensive. But this – is – NOT!

You may have an iPod, or may get one in the future. When you buy a new one, getting your data off the old one is a bit of a challenge. You could cry yourself to sleep at night, or use an easy solution to get the data off the old one!

Using Pod to PC, it’s easy to pull the data off of your old iPod or iPhone. It is freeware that lets you transfer music, videos and playlists from an iPod or iPhone back to your computer and into iTunes. Additionally, you can recover your music in iTunes after your computer crashes by transferring the music on your iPod or iPhone back to your computer!

Of course, for you Mac users, there is Pod to Mac!! It’s exactly the same concept, by the same people. It’s just made to work on OS X instead of Windows. How beautiful is that?!

This service is completely and 100% free! It’s not the most beautiful utility I’ve ever seen, but it gets the job done very well. That is what matters, right? Bookmark this site – I guarantee you’re going to wonder how you ever managed without it.

Who doesn’t like to sing? Even if you can’t “sing” really well, you still probably like to. I sing in the shower, in the car, and even on my live stream. Heck, people have recorded me singing in the past, and uploaded it all over YouTube. Oh, the joys of live streaming!

If you enjoy belting out songs, you will probably become addicted to the new online Karaoke site! Karaoke Party is a free service where you can practice from your own home, and “compete” against others. Sing karaoke online in your web browser. Practice your singing and increase your score. Challenge your friends in becoming the next karaoke champion. All you need is a microphone and a web browser that connects to the ‘Net!

Just a few minutes before recording this video, I recorded my own Karaoke version of the song “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz. I know nothing about music, and I can’t really sing. I’m sure you’ll cringe when you hear it, but that’s ok. I just love to sing along though!

You don’t need a Karaoke machine, nor any other fancy equipment. All you need is yourself, an Internet connection, and your microphone. Send everyone outside so they can’t hear you, and cut loose. Show the next American Idol that is inside of you!

A few days ago, I blogged about a musician in our community named David Crandall. I was blown away by what he does, and how good he is. I was also (apparently wrongly so) surprised to find we had such a talented musician in our little Geek community.

As I said… I was wrong to assume! I heard from several of you out there, all doing the same types of things as David!! Who knew we had all of these people among us making music, laying down tracks and jamming every day!? I certainly didn’t – but I do now!
