Most complaints against movers are overlooked and the consumer becomes a statistic while no action is ever taken against the moving company. When Congress dissolved the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) in 1995, they also removed the authority from the FMCSA to step in on a consumer’s behalf if they are taken advantage of by a moving company. In other words, they don’t have the authority to help you even if they want to.

If an investigation does occur, it takes months if not years for the FMCSA to, yes, get this… Fine the moving company. The scam moving companies get away with not paying the fines and if they did, the consumers don’t see a dime of their money back. The money from the moving company’s fines go to pay for highway improvements!

Woot Isn’t Always Worth a w00t

A friend of mine pointed out that Woot was running a special today on the Gateway M275 Tablet PC – for $599. In my humble opinion, this isn’t much of a bargain. I’d probably buy one at $199, but at $599 I’d just as soon put an additional $400 into it for a truly better Tablet PC experience.

You’d be better off spending $400 more ($999 total) for a basic Gateway CX210S – better processor, better power consumption, better RAM modules, slightly better screen resolution, likely faster hard drive, twice as much disk space, and it’s Vista Capable (Vista Ready with a memory upgrade to 1GB, whereas the M275 isn’t even listed as Vista Capable).

If you have $599 to spend on a Tablet PC, you have $999 – and at $999, your experience with the Tablet PC is going to be far better (from everything I’ve heard – not ever having owned one). Understand that Windows Vista is going to bring with it a lot of tablet-specific hooks. If a machine isn’t even Vista Capable today, I wouldn’t spend more than a couple hundred on it.

Intel’s Core 2 Duo processors changed “everything” – and I can’t wait to have one in my next laptop.

Moving Day is Tomorrow

Dude. We’re moving. Yeah, I know you know we’re moving – this isn’t the first time I’ve mentioned that we’re moving. The point of this post isn’t to say that we’re going to move – we’re actually moving, and it all starts tomorrow morning.

We’ve been in a holding pattern, as has most of Seattle this past week (largely due to poor weather conditions); we were supposed to sign the final paperwork yesterday, according to my calendar. That’s happening tomorrow, before the movers come and move us – and remember, they were going to move us two other times before this one, so the conversation went something like this:

<ul style="list-style-type: none>

Ponzi: We’ll be signing documents tomorrow.
Movers: So, are you sure you’re moving this time?
Ponzi: Yes, I’m sure.
Movers: We can move you tomorrow.
Ponzi: We were thinking about moving after the wedding.
Movers: Then you’ll lose your deposit.
Ponzi: Oops, then what time tomorrow?
Movers: After you sign your paperwork.
Ponzi: Okay, then you can move us.
Movers: So, are you sure you’re moving this time?
Ponzi: Yes, we’re sure.
Movers: Because we can’t move the move date again.
Ponzi: We understand.
Movers: We’ll move you tomorrow.

So, that’s it – we’re moving tomorrow, and I’m sure it’ll be quite a moving experience. I hope not to be incommunicado for too long! We never transfered our Comcast account to the new location, so it may be a few weeks before life returns to “normal” in the gnomestead. Here’s where the fun begins. Oh boy!
