Forget Wireless Contracts with Boost Mobile and the New Incognito

I have a problem: I get NFR copies for many iPhone apps.

This, itself, isn’t an issue – but the iPhone can only display up to 144 apps at one time. This limitation is artificial, as I have an insane amount of free space on the device. I currently have 250 apps in my iTunes library (out of tens of thousands available storewide). Many of these great apps can no longer be synced because of this imposed limitation. Consequently, I’m not carefree with what I choose to install on the iPhone anymore.

The solution: Apple needs to enable some kind of Spotlight search for installed apps on the iPhone, showing (a) the most recently used and (b) the most used apps – on two separate sheets.

I know that some people are content with having ~10 apps on their iPhone, but that (to me) seems like such a waste of resources and potential. I’m addicted to iPhone apps, I admit it – especially the free ones. Why is Apple not letting me access the full potential of this platform?

So, I admit that I’m an extreme case. How many apps do you have on your iPhone? I asked my Twitter followers:

Why Does Apple Restrict the iPhone’s Abilities?

Sure, it’s interesting to see that Linux on the iPhone is possible – but it’s anything but a practical development. Such was my sentiment on Twitter a half hour ago… and the responses are pretty much in line with the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” mentality. I asked – who would want this?!

Linux on the iPhone: So What?!

It’s super-easy to do things on a computer. If you’re mobile, and don’t have access to the Web… how do you manage to do what you need online? You could always call a friend, but then you’d have to give out your usernames and passwords. Do you really want to go to that kind of hassle? Why not check out Dial2Do?

Dial2Do lets you do common tasks by just calling a number and speaking. Use it to send Email or text messages, record reminders to help you remember things, post updates to your Twutter or Jaiku stream and listen to your favourite internet content. It’s easy and handsfree.

When you dial we ask you two or three questions like “Do what?”, “To who?”. You say what you want and then we’ll look after the rest. We recognise what you said and look after getting your action carried out.

For people who are always on the go, this can save you an insane amount of time. Send out important emails while you’re stuck in traffic, or even Tweet to ask everyone if there’s a clearer route. There are other services out there like this, but this one is seriously intensive on what you can do.

Just like the word espresso is often mispronounced, so are a lot of tech words mispronounced, and misused.

• Palm Devices are not PalmPilots. Palm devices haven’t been titled PalmPilot in over 8 years now. It’s time to stop calling them PalmPilots. You can thank a lawsuit by the makers of the Pilot pen for this. They are to now be called Palm devices or Palm Treo, Palm V, Palm VII, Palm PDA, etc..
• Cell phone’s aren’t cellular anymore. Most phone companies don’t use cellular technology anymore. Yet nobody uses the term “wireless phone”. Calling today’s wireless phones “cellular” is like calling a CD a cassette tape. Yes there are still some cellular networks, but why call a phone that doesn’t use cellular technology a cell phone? Heck, they often aren’t even a “phone” anymore. They are mobile devices. They do far more these days than to just act as a phone.

You’ve probably seen the news – Senator Edwards is using BitTorrent to distribute video now! Like Dave says, it’s a big deal. I didn’t realize that Gary Lerhaupt had the Senator lined up when he emailed me about his new MoveDigital service last night. Not sure if the following points are available anywhere else, but… here are seven things you can do with MoveDigital (as relayed by Gary himself):

• Sign in with your Prodigem account or create a new account (all Prodigem users get a free year of service).
• Upload your files to be served as direct downloads.
• Convert your video and audio to mobile phone format (3GP) so that they can be streamed directly from your MoveDigital mobile page.
• Create torrents of all your stuff.
• Use the rectangular Web widget (the rectangle to the left of each file you upload) to easily reblog your links. The HTML for the embed can be found from the Share button.
• Once you you have your widget on your blog, people can click the Share button to directly add bandwidth into your account to help you out (each 5GB they add, adds 1 to their own account) – aka social bandwidth sharing.
• Enjoy the fact that bandwidth on our service acts like prepaid cell phone minutes with unlimited rollover. That is, it doesn’t recycle at the end of the month and it only disappears when you use it. Moreover, for direct downloads we only charge you for bandwidth for files which are completely transferred. If someone stops half way through, no bandwidth is considered used (though torrent and mobile hosting are done per byte).
