I admit it – I love Christmas music. I like the old, traditional stuff. I like some of the funny stuff. I even like some of the new-fangled stuff! Earlier this evening, I was listening to some Christmas tunes while working in my office, and the Twelve Days of Christmas song came on. As I hummed along with this cute little song, I remembered that there’s a “redneck” version, as well. That got me thinking… where’s the Geek version?! Surely there are more than enough gadgets lying around to help inspire us, right? We demand equal representation! If Jeff Foxworthy can sing about redneck gifts, why can’t we sing about Geeky ones?

Here’s my challenge to you – come up with a whole new version of the standard Twelve Days of Christmas. The catch is, of course, that it has to be Geek style! Only Geeky gifts, gadgets and gizmos are allowed for each of the days. Make sure the song makes sense, and rhymes at least somewhat. If you want me to sing it on stream some day, you need to make sure it sounds at least kind of coherent. If I receive one that is truly awesome, you never know where you might see or hear your creation!

Being sick has its advantages – ones I never knew about! I have had some sort of crazy virus for several days now. I admit to spending one entire day sleeping it off as best I could. I stayed out of my office for the most part, and knocked myself out with the medicines the doctor gave me. Since that day, I’ve spent as much time as possible doing nothing other than sitting in my office. Since that happens to be where I work… I’ve actually accomplished quite a lot! I haven’t felt like going anywhere really, or “doing” anything much.

I’ve managed to catch up on some reading I felt I was behind on. I have come up with some ideas for upcoming projects. And, I’ve even managed to croak out some geeky new videos for the YouTube channel. I’m ahead of myself on those, which is kind of cool. Usually, the things I record are uploaded immediately the next day. Now I have a bit of a “buffer”, in case there’s a day I am too busy with other things to record.

As backwards as it seems, being sick has made me more productive. What helps boost your “get things done” levels? Also – what do you spend the most time doing when you’re sick? Do you curl up in front of the tv, or read a book? Do you spend all of your time sleeping? Or, are you like me and plant yourself in front of the computer monitors?

I read an article on TechCrunch earlier today, discussing how Twitter will soon dominate the Internet, replacing even Google as the king. This made me stop and think for a bit. I mean, come on… Google is, well… Google! Do we honestly believe that anything could topple it from its undeniable reign at the top of the Internet ladder? The answer is a resounding YES.

I blather on about Twitter all of the time. Hell, half the World talks about Twitter, and with good reason. Twitter isn’t just some hot new fad where people talk about what they ate for lunch. Sure, we post silly things in our tweet stream. But Twitter is so much more than that, and it’s time more people accept that fact – and embrace it!

Twitter is one of the fastest and most accurate news sources out there. It may not have been intended by the creators to serve as such, but that is exactly what it is doing. When news happens, you can find it on Twitter within literal seconds. People who are on the scene of accidents post immediate updates as soon as they know them. Anyone in the vicinity of where there is something newsworthy happening whip their phones out and tweet faster than you can blink your eyes.

Twitter is also fast becoming an amazing way for businesses to connect with their customers, just as Frank Eliason discussed at Gnomedex recently. Your customers are on Twitter, so your business better be there, as well.

I’m sure you’re still laughing at my impression of a Snow Leopard, in honor of the newest release of Mac OS X. The upgrade is only $30.00, which is an excellent price. You should go out and get it right away, but I’m not sure if you’re ready to install it just yet.

The upgrade was painless. The trick to it is to take the disc out of the sleeve, put it in the drive, and click the Install button… and you’re done. From that point forward, it will show you if your applications are compatible or not.

Some people are saying that Snow Leopard is an awesome upgrade, and others don’t think so as much. I’d say right now, I’m seeing it split pretty evenly. I am enjoying some of the new features, such as Exchange integration on the desktop – it works flawlessly. I haven’t seen much of a speed increase, though. There are some nips and tucks around the operating system. The Finder has been completely re-written, which is awesome.

There are subtle changes, as well. I’m a little leary about putting it on all of my machines. Yes, it’s a great upgrade. The changes are incremental, but I’m not sure if all of my applications are going to be compatible, especially ones that I really need and use. So, I’m going to wait about a month of so to make sure all of my software is updated before I jump in.

1. Does it crash?

Many people ask me this question, especially when they see our Mac lab at school. They always take one look at them and want one. The answer to this question is: YES. Unfortunately, they do crash, but no way as regularly as a Windows machine might. I mean this in the way that OS X is a lot more stable these days, and works well with supported hardware. When it does crash, you will either get the endlessly Spinning Beachball Of Death, or it’ll will sort itself out in a few seconds. Or, you might (on very rare occasions) get a “kernel panic” with a message in the center of the screen suggesting you need to restart. Kernel panic = equivalent of a BSOD on Windows.

2. I can’t do my work as well on it!

This is a large concern because people have been sucked into Microsoft Office. The truth is a Mac OS X is just as good, if not better, at “office” tasks as Windows is. This is, again, primarily due to the stability and user friendliness of a Mac. Not to mention, you can actually get Microsoft Office for Mac or use Apple’s own iWork (and we all know that iWork is Chris Pirillo’s choice, if he doesn’t recommend Google Docs or OpenOffice.org). iWork is a suite of utilities that includes a word processor, a presentation tool, and a spreadsheet application. All of these iWork applications work well and are largely Microsoft Office document-compatible.

3. OS X is not as powerful as Windows.

Windows a few years ago, may have been more customizable than OS X, but things have changed, tables have turned. OS X features many power user-friendly features including Quartz 2D Extreme, a powerful 2D rendering tool. And if you’re a tweaker, you’ll love to have Secrets installed. Chris did a video on Secrets one time – it lets you fine tune your Mac down to every last detail. He’s talked about tweaking OS X at length.

4. Are programs difficult to install on OS X?

Apps are far, far easier to install and uninstall than programs are on Windows. You merely drag and drop. It is as easy as that, believe it or not, in Mac OS X. Typically, there are no complicated installers to mess with. Uninstalling is just as easy. Drag the App you do not want into the trash. True.

5. Is it hard to find things?

Good heavens, no! If you can find stuff easily in Windows, then you can definitely find something in OS X. In your Dock at the far left, there is a happy little icon called Finder. He is happy to help you find anything. Whether it is an app or a document, he is willing to help. Just click the Finder icon, and up will pop a window with all the places down the left hand side. There are places like: your hard drives and USB drives. These are generally at the top under the Devices section. Underneath them is your network devices and below that, you will see folder shortcuts for Documents. Applications, Videos, etc. Another easy way to find things is Spotlight. In the Menu Bar at the top right of your Mac desktop is a little magnifying glass icon. Click it, and you will see a search field. Spotlight will find apps, documents and e-mails – just about anything on your hard drive(s). So, if someone asks you if it is hard to find things on a Mac, you can say it’s far easier to do than it is on Windows.

The topic of OS X vs. Windows has been in a long and drawn out heated debate for well over 4 years now with the introduction of Windows XP and Mac OS X. Windows users will tell you that your current software will not work on OS X and that you will be stuck with a mediocre OS doing mediocre tasks. Mac users on the other hand will tell you that you are missing out on a much more powerful user experience. Today, we will discuss the top 5 reasons (I think) you should switch to Mac OS X.

Reason 1: Beauty

This sounds weird when talking about an operating system… but when you are talking about OS X… this is true. Mac OS X, unlike Windows, takes the user’s experience into account. When you click a radio button, the OS responds to your click in an appropriate way. When you open an application, the dock will bounce the application’s icon to alert you that the application is “doing something”. Not only does the dock do this, but also other applications throughout the OS responds in similar ways.

Reason 2: Management

In Windows, when you need to manage a specific part of the OS, you have to search around to find the one dialog box to allow you to manage that part. In OS X, there is none of that. You open up System Preferences, and boom (as Steve Jobs would say), there every thing is! If you need to change a network preference, instead of having to search around the Control Panel, then to the Network Setup Wizard in Windows, you just click Network and everything is there. Also, if, by any chance, your computer does crash… don’t panic. With Time Machine and an External Hard Drive… there is no need to worry. Just pop in the OS X installation CD, choose restore, and that’s it. Wait for the system to restart and everything is back to the way it was. Did I mention that OS X does all this with out outside action? That means, in laymen’s terms, that OS X does that all for you. As soon as you plug in a External Hard Drive, OS X sees it and automatically starts backing up your entire system. It’s really great!

Reason 3: Multimedia

As you have previously read, OS X was designed with power in mind. However, OS X was also designed to be the hub of your digital life. Now, what is a digital life? A digital life is basically this: your music, your photos and your movies. That’s it! That’s a digital life. I know for a fact that just about all of you that read this have your digital photos and music somewhere on your computer. With Mac OS X’s built in applications such as iPhoto and iMovie, making a DVD for grandma or grandpa for Christmas could not be easier. On Windows, when you plug in a digital camera, you more than likely get that annoying dialog that asks you “Hey! What do you want to do!?” Then, you have to choose an option, choose where you want to put the photos, what you want to name them, then after all that… import. With OS X, there is none of that. You simply plug in a digital camera, iPhoto automatically opens, and imports your photos into a new set. Its that easy. Once you have the photos into iPhoto, and you want to make a slideshow DVD as a Christmas gift. just click the DVD button. OS X does all the rest for you. Enter a title, choose some background music, and press burn. That’s it. There is nothing else to do but to see the joy on grandma or grandpa’s face when they open up a gift that you made.

Reason 4: Making the Switch Can’t be Easier

Making the switch from a Windows PC to a Mac couldn’t be simpler. If you have a network, (and who doesn’t these days?) just connect the Mac, give it a name, and watch it show up in your network connections. Once its there, just drag and drop your files into the appropriate folder and watch them show up on your Mac. Another way to switch… your iPod. Most geeks have an iPod. If you have one with a large amount of storage, just enable disk mode, open up My Computer on the PC, then just drag and drop your files. Once they are on the iPod, just hook it up to the Mac, open the disk from the desktop, then simply drag and drop the files into the right folder on the Mac. Yet another way to switch is to use an External Hard Drive. Just hook up the drive and drag and drop like I mentioned above. Switching couldn’t be simpler.

Reason 5: Social Benefits

For whatever reason, a Mac seems to have a social benefit that follows them wherever they go. I have a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air. Anytime I go to Starbucks or to any of the many small cafés around Louisville, I get asked all the time, “What kind of computer is that?” “Where can I get one of those?” Those are just a few of the questions that I get asked all the time. People want a Mac! Put simply, they are cool. People view them as a cool addition to any person. A Mac can boost your self-esteem and also your view from other people.

Mac OS X is more than just a operating system… it’s a way of life. I know that sounds weird, but as soon as you use a Mac, I promise you, you will never go back!! If you are a Windows user… I want to hear from you! I want you to disagree with me! I want you to tell me why I am wrong. If you hate Apple.. I want you to tell me why! Hey Chris, you may know my as AYBABTU in the chat. Anyway, I compiled a list of things to do right out of the box when you aquire a new Mac…

1. Update, Update, Update! One of the best features of the Mac OS X operating system, is that Apple is constantly releasing updates! These can range anywhere from firmware to bug fixes, and many times patch harmful security flaws in the operating system. To find these updates, go to the apple menu, and select “Software Update.” Once you’ve done the first round of updates and restarted your computer, go through the process again, as Software Update has a maximum amount of updates that it can do each time.
2. Calibrate the display! This is one that a lot of people can forget, as they are already busy glowering in the beauty of their new computer. To access this menu, go to the Apple menu, system preferences, displays, color, and “Calibrate…” Make sure to tick the “Expert Mode” box, as this opens up a whole other section of options. Adjusting the white point correctly is crucial for reducing eye strain. I usually prefer mine a little more towards the blue end of the spectrum.
3. If it’s a laptop, calibrate the battery! Charge your battery fully (until the charger light turns green), and unplug it. Don’t let the computer go to sleep, and play on your computer until it dies. Make sure to ignore the “Reserve Battery Power” messages. Once your computer has fallen asleep in an effort to maintain your data, let it sit for about 5 hours, until the white light on the front of the computer has stopped pulsating. Finally, plug it into the charger, and don’t unplug it until you are again at 100% charge. Calibrating the battery is critical for having a better battery life.
4. Repair disk permissions! Unless you have the computer of the gods, odds are that there is some error in your disk permissions. Open the program “Disk Utility,” found in the “Utilities” folder of your applications. Select your drive, and then select “Repair Disk Permissions.” This makes your computer generally less prone to errors. If you’d like to get slightly more advanced with it, and are comfortable at the command line, you can do a full disk verify and repair by restarting your mac into single user mode. You achieve this by holding down the “apple” and “s” keys right after the startup chime. Once you see some scrolling white text, wait until everything has stopped moving. Type: fsck -f (and then press the “Enter”). Make sure to remember the space in between (!). This takes about five minutes, but will repair everything that it sees wrong. Remember this command if ever your computer won’t mount the hard drive, as it has saved me on numerous occasions.
5. Set up a backup system! I suppose that this goes for all computers, but this is a vital step. Regardless of brand, all computers will have their bad days, which usually occur at the exact moment that you need your files. Apple has already included a great backup utility, Time Machine, which is free, and it’s included with the operating system. If you do not have leopard, but are setting up this system late, apple has another great utility called “Backup.” You can download this off of the Apple website. It isn’t as intuitive as Time Machine, but it gets the job done.

After reading Danny’s blog post, I had to put this question to my friends. In his post, Danny says that he is very seriously considering switching to a Mac, both for the hardware value, and the beauty of OS X. Let’s see what everyone had to say to this.

If I don’t say this right, people will be upset. I know that some will chastise me for even doing this video. What I’m referring to is a situation that you may have either found yourself in… or will in the future. I’m talking about switching your primary operating system from Windows to Mac OS X. You could say it was curiosity that won me over. I was a life-long Windows user, like many of you are. However, I felt as though I was ready to expand my horizons and learn more. I started playing in Linux and OS X. I love to learn new things. Heck, I’m excited to try out the newest version of Windows when it’s ready to beta test.

Until you are me, you cannot tell me what I can choose for myself, and vice-versa. I hate it when people email me to ask me what they should get. I don’t know what you should get! What will fit your budget and needs the best? No matter what, I’m happy with whatever you decide. Do your research and choose whatever you are comfortable will be the best product for you.

As far as operating systems go, there is no “best”. Again, it’s a matter of choice. What will suit your needs and preferences? When you first turn on a Mac, you will be ticked off if you’re expecting to just jump in and know what to do, where everything is, and how to use it all. It’s different. Of course it is! It’s a completely different experience. Does that make it a bad one? Does that make it better? Of course not! It just makes it different.

There may be some features inside of Windows that you miss. I have a few tools that I have found that may help you feel more comfortable using a Mac.

• When you right click inside an Explorer menu, you’ve got “new” and it cascades out from there. Some people miss that in Mac OS X. If you download Document Palette, it will do essentially the same thing. Document Palette runs in the background and allows you to create new documents in the current folder.
• If you like that cascading right click menu, but don’t really like Document Palette, you can try NuFile. It adds a new file menu when you right click at a folder just like what you can do in Windows. With this menu, you can create an empty file of your favourite type with just two clicks.
• I fell in love with this instantly. Inside of Windows, it’s easy to change file types on a mass scale… not so much in a Mac. MisFox will show all the file mappings settings and the protocol helpers. You can inspect these settings, but you can also edit, delete and create new items for these settings.
• How can you configure your sounds in OS X? Well, now it’s as easy as it is in Windows. BleepBlop is a simple utility which allows you to customise all your OS X sounds through an easy-to-use sexy interface. Bleep Blop also allows you to save your sound settings as Blundles.
