We’ve uploaded several awesome screencasts lately. All of you are sending in informative and high-quality tutorials for us to share with the world. It’s not too late for you to get your screencast on our channels, you know! Get busy and create something wonderful! Gabriel is a fan of our live stream, and has come up with a simple tutorial to show you how to add a gadget on your desktop to make tuning in to my stream even easier!

With just a few clicks, you’ll have a widget right on your desktop for our live stream. It even has a volume control, so that you can mute me whenever you’re busy working on other things. Why anyone would want to mute me, I have no clue! But there ya go. You have that option.

Just head over to my gallery page, and click on the “Download” button over on the right. Now click “Install”, and then choose “Open With Windows Desktop Gadgets”.

That’s all you have to do in order to have a widget right on your desktop that streams my live feed. You no longer have to visit my site, or my Ustream page! Drag the window wherever you want it on your desktop, and resize it to fit your needs. You can even close it whenever you want. Re-open it by right-clicking on your desktop and then clicking “gadgets”.

Changes in Our IRC Network Channel

As many of you know by now, my live chat room changed networks today. For many years, my various channels were located on the WyldRyde network. For the most part, things worked very well between myself, the network, and its staff.

There have been many changes recently, and I’m not going to make much comment on them. It’s frankly not my business, nor my place, to attempt to guess as to every “real” reason, and everything that happened behind the scenes. However, moving networks was not a decision I came to lightly. This also wasn’t done solely to please one or two people, as some are trying to claim.

I want my chat users to have the best possible experience when they visit my channel. There were some things that transpired at WyldRyde today that I knew would prevent that positive experience, changes which could potentially place much pressure and stress on my staff, my users and even myself.

The owners and administrators of the new network, GeekShed, are people I have come to know very well over the years. These people know what they’re doing, and they do it very well. I have complete confidence in them, and in their ability to properly maintain the new network.

GeekShed IRC was started by a majority of the former WyldRyde Network staff. They felt that the WyldRyde management was not handling issues and complaints (made by staff, users and channel owners) over a period of several months. These complaints were ignored, and not dealt with in any satisfactory manner. The recent (and undisclosed to the users and majority of the staff) acquisition of WyldRyde by BestTechie played only a small part in the actual decision and subsequent move.

I am very happy thus far with my new IRC home, and I certainly hope you will join us there. If you have any questions, comments or concerns, you can leave them here in a follow-up comment. For questions related to the network itself (not my channel, specifically), you can join the new network: irc.geekshed.net and join the #help channel there to speak with the staff.

Edited to add: You will not need to re-register, no. The nicknames, channels, passwords, etc were all moved to the new network. Your nickname is already registered on GeekShed if it was registered on WyldRyde, and you will use the same password to log in. Also, the voiced user list was moved for my channel, and will continue to operate the same as it has in the past.

As always, I will continue to be streaming live… 24 hours a day, 7 days a week… at live.pirillo.com.

I’ve been doing this live video thing for just about two years now. I wanted to talk about online video today in order to answer a few questions Steve Garfield had for me. He’s working on a new book, which should be a great read! When talking with me about the book, Steve says:

Most of the videoblogging books out there were written a few years ago, so I’m producing a book with real world examples that people can pick up and actually do things. Interviews with people like you will be both inspiring and practical.

Sounds good to me, so let’s get going on those answers!

You have a background in TV, hosting the TechTV show Call for Help. What did you learn from your TV experience that would help others produce video for the web? The keyword in that sentence is “produce”. That’s what most videos lack – production quality. I’ve evolved my production quality over time – I’m doing my best! My setup is now such that I feel it works very well. I’ve even worked with others as a consultant, who all now use this same setup.
You stream live using Ustream.tv and then post your videos on YouTube. The quality is very good. What computer, video and audio equipment do you use and why? It is true that I stream live to file via Ustream. I do this because it brings a different dimension to my videos. Instead of just being a talking head, I’d rather have the interaction of the community. I change hardware up frequently, in order to make things better.
What equipment would you suggest to someone getting started? People can get started using a laptop with an inbuilt webcam, right? Is that a good idea? Absolutely, they can start that way. Don’t spend any money if you don’t have to. That being said… if you want your videos to look professional, then spend money! It’s a matter of personal preference, and what your ultimate goals are when producing content.
Why are you using YouTube to host your videos? Is it because of the integration with Ustream.tv? Are there drawbacks to using YouTube? I use a variety of video hosting services, honestly. I don’t only rely on YouTube. That being said, YouTube has this vast audience worldwide. It’s pretty much the place where everyone goes to find videos. YouTube is actually the second largest search engine on the Internet. A person would be crazy not to put their videos on YouTube. The number of views that YouTube gives me is astronomical… around 80,000 views per day!
You just got over 1 million hits for your airplane safety video! How’d that happen? That was the first YouTube video I ever did. It was just me mocking the safety announcement on a flight. I couldn’t help it, it was hilarious at the time. I was making up hand gestures, and being silly. For some reason, people just love this video, and find it to be completely funny. When you put something on the web it doesn’t just fade away – it’s there forever!
Have you figured out the best method for producing web video? Recording a live stream without editing and posting directly to YouTube? Any secrets you can share on how to best do it? Everyone is going to have a different style. Me… I like doing things live, saving the file and converting it to a different format. I have to thank my assistant Kat for the help she gives on that end. She downloads and converts all my videos, gets them uploaded to the various sites, and writes up the show notes for my blog. There’s a lot involved, and I’m grateful for her help! That also shows you that producing content regularly is not always a walk in the park. If that’s all you’re doing, you can likely manage it yourself. But if you have your finger in many other pies as I do, you’ll need help. I choose to shoot live to file because I hate editing… it takes up too much time!
What makes a successful video? Success can be measured in many ways. For me, success comes from doing something that I myself am proud of. For others, it’s getting information from the video that they were hoping to attain, and learning something new from whatever it was I talked about. So success can be measured in view numbers, or one of many other ways.
What advice would you give to a business getting started in online video? Just do it. So many businesses and people get caught up in not doing things, or become afraid of bad comments/reviews. In fact, your video is not a sucess unless someone has been negative!
What is the secret to online video? Do something that is unique, and stands out. Not only yourself, but your set as well has to convey your message. Don’t try to be someone else. You have to own what you’re doing, and make it yours.
What other comments or advice do you have? One thing I will say is to develop a thick skin. There are idiots everywhere, and you’ll have to deal with them when your content is distributed. Keep doing your thing, and don’t let jerks bring you down or make you question yourself. That isn’t to say you shouldn’t take constructive criticism – you should! But take everything else and throw it out the window.

My target market are the people who don’t know me, as much as I love my audience. I have to do my best to get to the people who don’t yet know me. Pay attention to your community, and remember to go after the rest of the people to get them into your community!

I’m live streaming from my iPhone once again! The latency isn’t bad at all. You know what this means, don’t you? It means I can get up and be on the move without being tethered to a laptop or desktop. At least, when you’re able to download and install this app for the iPhone – which isn’t quite available (yet).

You might remember a few months ago when I did a review of the QIK app for streaming on the iPhone. Well – this isn’t it! This is Ustream’s app! You can use this new app to stream live from your iPhone or iPod Touch as long as you have a wifi connection. The audio is solid, and the picture quality is pretty good.

So, how do you turn your iPhone into a video recorder? Easy:

Download and install this app from the iTunes app store.
Sign up for a Ustream account (free).
Press the Broadcast button.

Unfortunately, Apple hasn’t allowed them to release the app yet – but it should be coming soon!

For this video, I carried my iPhone into my bedroom with me, and stretched out on the bed. You can do pretty much anything with your own stream (within reason). Although this app works well for the most part, there are some bugs, as you would expect. For instance, I cannot switch over to my regular live video feed with any degree of ease. People get stuck in limbo, and aren’t sure what they’re watching. I may have to set up a separate mobile feed for this until Ustream figures out a way to make this work a bit better.

Walking back into my office didn’t go as smoothly as I planned. If you have an iPhone and a live video stream – you can travel! Ustream is a live video community for everyone. Anyone with a computer, an Internet connection and a web cam can set up their own channel and broadcast live.

Whether it is a live video stream, or a video that you are going to put on YouTube, there are many things that you have to keep in mind. Through my trial and errors in making videos, I have found many important items that need to be addressed to make an all-around decent video. I have arranged them according to what I think is the most important first, to the tip that affects you the least.

Video Quality – Good video quality is a must for almost every type of video that you may plan to shoot. In the case of showing small items, you need to make sure that the audience can see what you are holding or showcasing. If you appear as a blur on the screen, you should adjust the video quality. This can be achieved by adjusting the focus. Good video quality is a goal that you need to work towards each and every time you shoot video. Try finding out what quality your device has, and attempt to use it to its fullest. If you can use a video camera or photography camera that can record video, then try to use that. If possible, stay away from webcams as they can have a lower quality picture than that of a video camera. If you must use a web camera, purchase one that is of higher quality instead of one that is less expensive.
Lighting – Lighting, along with video quality, is important. If you do not have good lighting for your video, then your audience will not be able to see what you are trying to show them. Placement of lighting is important so the viewer can see what you are showcasing. For example, if you place a lamp to the side of you with the shade taken off, then the viewer will typically be able to see only half of your face. If you can move the lamp in front of you as much as possible, it should cut down on the shadowing of your face. Another example of this is if you are standing in front of a window that is open. The light coming in from a window can darken the things in front of and around it. A simple solution would be to close it, or put a sheet, towel, or a curtain over it. If it is necessary for the window to remain open, then you can brighten the area in front of the window with some artificial light from a lamp or ceiling lights. If there is a brighter window behind the camera, then you could let light in from that window to combat the light in front of the camera. Remember, too much light can be a bad thing. The video can become washed out, where it is hard to see what is on the screen.
Sound – Sound is another key item that you need to take into consideration when you are setting up, recording, or streaming video. The placement and surroundings can effect your decision greatly. If you have a microphone on the device that you are using to record or stream video, then you may want to think about getting another microphone. The most convenient spot to place your microphone may not always be the place that you should put it. If the easiest place to put the microphone is behind you, you should automatically think about a different place. If you can not find another spot for the microphone, then you can attempt to make the best of the original microphone on your video recording or streaming device.
Information – The information that you give in the recorded or live video is an important factor, because it will help you express your message to the audience. You have to be able to convey what you’re saying to your audience properly, or they may not be able to understand what you are trying to get across to them. You will want to take some time to plan out what you will say ahead of time to prevent the need to redo the shot. Before you stream live video, take some time to look at the material that you will present… rehearse it, then shoot it.
Editing – Editing is important mainly to recorded video, as it is difficult to edit a live feed. However, you can record the live video that you streamed, to edit later. Some people prefer to upload raw footage and do nothing with it. That is understandable, because it can be a hassle to edit video. However, it is a good idea to edit video in the event that you made mistakes. Editing may also come in handy if you are unable to get the same camera angle again, because of the time of day, position, or equipment change.

These are the five tips I find most important for beginners to have a successful video shoot. It is easy to incorporate these tips into your video-making routine. If you have any other suggestions that you find helpful, you can find me on Geeks, or leave a comment here.

I’m streaming live from my iPhone, using Qik. How cool is this? With Qik, you can share with anyone and everyone what’s going on anywhere and everywhere you go.

Really neat. I wonder if Apple will even approve this app. It would certainly eat tons of bandwidth off the AT&T network. Although some VOIP apps have passed the vetting process. – ….

I recently gave a short presentation at Microsoft’s Social Computing Symposium. I spoke about streaming my life live for the World to watch, how it has affected me, and how it could and will affect any of you. Here are my ten ways it would change your life if you choose to stream 24/7.

You begin to see yourself through other people’s eyes. It’s no longer just “you”. It’s what everyone else thinks you are.
Family will begin to avoid you at all costs. This could be either very good, or very bad, depending on how you see your family. Trust me, not all of them want to have their idiosyncrasies broadcast to the World.
Your life gets a rewind button. There are many moments you will inevitably miss… like the dog falling off your desk. Thanks to your stream going constantly, and others recording what you’re doing, you’ll get a “rewind” button in order to see those moments yourself.
Your sense of loneliness becomes non-existent. Several of us work at home, and that’s how much of a social life we get. When you have an audience watching, you are no longer alone.
Your privacy is in the World’s hands. You can no longer do things without remembering that everyone is watching. You have to leave the camera if you want any privacy.
You can no longer lie about where you are, or aren’t. People have called me on occasion, just to see if I’ll pick up the phone. Then they get irritated with me, because they saw me sitting at my desk. Well yeah, I was there. I was busy! Really!
You monitor your idiosyncrasies like never before. Admit it! You do things in the privacy of your own home or office that you would never do in front of others. We all do!
The threat of lawsuits from places like the RIAA is real. I watch television shows and listen to music all the time. I do so legally, but the sound comes out across the stream. I *could* get into trouble.
You can become an event’s superhero. I wasn’t planning to live stream this event. However, since the need arose, I filled that gap.
You become more honest with yourself and others. “Yourself” is the most important part of that statement. You can no longer lie to yourself about things you do or don’t do. People will point out everything that you do, and you can’t deny it.

I only had time to take one audience question, sadly. Someone asked me what I have changed since beginning this live streaming journey. The answer is simple: I have changed myself.

Yeah… I have a new iMac. Isn’t she gorgeous? I’ve been looking at getting one for awhile, to use for a machine to live stream. The live stream has been being powered using a Mac Mini that’s kind of old. It’s just underpowered, and not easy to keep everything going. So anyway, the iMac is going to run the chat and stream, and hopefully everything will run much more smoothly. I’m not sure how it will all be set up at this point, but I’m happy to have new options. I have to thank Ponzi, who gave this to me for my birthday. As a Geek, you can never have too many computers, especially if you work from home.

The best part of doing unboxing videos is being able to tease people all day. No matter what it is, I’ll leave the box sitting on my desk all day. People will join and watch, waiting to see what I’ve gotten, and what I’m going to do with it. At the time I recorded this particular video, we had nearly 900 people watching the live stream. I love when so many of you want to join us and see what we’re up to!

To all of you, I’m sorry if you had to hear the fight Ponzi and I had on the live stream earlier. After all of this time, she gave me an ultimatum. She can’t take the whole live stream thing anymore. I have to choose… my wife, or all of you. As much as I love you all, I had to choose her. I won’t be live streaming anymore, and I’m unsure if this will be my last YouTube video or not.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the live stream over the past year. Thanks especially to the ops who kept the chat room going at all hours of the day and night, and made it such a fun place to hang out. I guess you guys can keep it open if you want, but I will no longer be there myself. It’s been an amazing time, hasn’t it? We’ve learned a lot, and made many new friends along the way. When I look back over the past year, I will remember all of the fun we had late at night most of all. I’m sorry I have to put Kat out of her job working on my videos. I’m sure she’ll scrape something up quickly. She’s a smart cookie, and maybe someone else who doesn’t have a wife to contend with will snap her up to do videos for them.

Ian Quinn is the President of Products and Services with Lonick Internet Solutions. He has sent in a top five list of tips he compiled to help you have an excellent live stream.

Have a place to host your video and chat room. If you don’t need a chat room, don’t get one.
Make sure you have what it takes to be watched by complete strangers. If you can not speak in front of people at your school, job, or anywhere, then being an online streamer might not be the best for you.
Have interesting topics. If you are on a tech show and you are talking about wood cutting, or something completely off topic, you will lose your audience.
Make sure you have the proper equipment. If you have the money, spend it. A good start would be an external microphone that is not a headset, a webcam or camcorder with mediocre to great video quality, and most importantly, a computer that can run the software required to stream.
Get your name known. An easy way of doing this would be to “guest star” on a friends live stream and tell people where to find you.

Live Conference Audio and Video Streaming

For the first time ever, Gnomedex will have a live video stream of on-stage events – something I’ve wanted to offer from the very beginning of the event series (which started seven years ago). Ustream has opened up personal communications and professional business models, taking them each a step further by helping push our conference experience to the connected world in real-time. They will be set up on a dedicated line, much like we had done for the audio stream in years past. There will be no need for anybody else to stream the event.

Not only will the video stream be live (passed through my own account in conjunction with the community), but through the magic of Ustream’s infrastructure, each session will be uploaded to our various online video network accounts almost immediately after it’s been recorded. So, even if you’re unable to experience the magic of Gnomedex live – you can catch it before the energy and buzz dissipate. Indeed, it will be nice to review and share the sessions with friends – long before and after the conference comes to a close.

Much like our live videos are produced with Ustream today, each segment will have our live chat and sponsor logos integrated throughout. You’ll have the opportunity to be a part of the videos, whether you’re chatting from the Gnomedex auditorium or from a remote location. I’m sure this won’t keep backchannels from popping up here and there, but at least we’ve given everybody a chance to be a part of our Gnomedex family.

But don’t thank Ponzi or myself – thank Ustream.
