It is relatively safe to save your passwords within your browser. However, if you want an extra layer of security, you should check out the Master Password feature in Firefox. Doing this does not replace all of your passwords, nor does it overwrite them. It simply will make you enter a master password once during each session. This allows you to access all your other passwords, and log you into sites automatically that you have saved information for.

If you need to manage your passwords for Windows or OS X, be sure to check out KeePass. This is a free, open-source program that is very easy to use, and can make your online life a whole lot nicer.
